I blickfånget här står Nordiska museets samiska samlingar 1930-70 och intendenten Ernst Manker. Han var idog skildrare och samlare av samisk kulturhistoria och belyses i ljuset av sin samtid och en vetenskaplig problematik av kritisk museologi och urfolksstudier. Bokens foton och dokument visar samiskt kulturarv men vems blick, vems röst och vems berättelse är det egentligen som hörs och syns?
Abstract:
Nordiska museets samiska samlingar har en lång och sammansatt historia. I blickfånget för den här studien står perioden 1930-70, en tid av modernisering, samisk mobilisering, statligt förmyndarskap och rasism i både politisk och vetenskaplig dräkt. Under samma tid blev intendenten vid museet, Ernst Manker, Sveriges då mest produktive skildrare och samlare av samisk kulturhistoria. Friktion är en forskarbiografi. Här möter läsaren en individ såväl i sin samtid som i ljuset av en bredare vetenskaplig problematik. Hur museer väljer att framställa samer och andra urfolk visar sig få betydelse på både kort och lång sikt genom de samlingar som skapas och överförs mellan generationer. Bokens fotografier, föremål och dokument är en del av det samiska kulturarvet och bildar basen för författarens analys. Men vems blick, vems röst och vems berättelse är det egentligen som hörs och syns? Det är frågor som ställs inom postkolonial forskning, urfolksstudier och kritisk museologi, som tillsammans utgör den här studiens vetenskapliga sammanhang
