Der Band umfasst vier Themenbereiche: Im ersten Teil sollen theoretische Aspekte der Multikulturalismusdebatte aufgezeigt werden, um anschließend im zweiten Teil allgemeine Migrations- und Integrationsaspekte von Einwandererminderheiten zu veranschaulichen. Im dritten und vierten Teil illustrieren einige Minderheitenbeispiele in Ost- und Westeuropa die Problematik ausschnitthaft und ermöglichen verschiedene Perspektiven auf die Auseinandersetzung zwischen Integration und Selbstbestimmung. Dr. phil. Karin B. Schnebel ist Lehrkraft für besondere Aufgaben am Lehrstuhl für Politikwissenschaft an der Universität Passau sowie Lehrbeauftragte am Geschwister-Scholl-Institut der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München und der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt a.M.

Zudem bildet der geographisch-kulturelle Raum Deutschlands und Frankreichs den Gegenstand der mehr als dreißig Einzeluntersuchungen. Die Antike als Wiege der abendländischen Kultur bildet jeweils den Ausgangspunkt der drei Bereiche Geschichte, Literatur und Kunstgeschichte – ihre Rezeption besitzt in diesem Band einen wichtigen Stellenwert. Den gemeinsamen fränkischen Wurzeln Mitteleuropas tragen die Aufsätze zum kulturellen Gedächtnis im Mittelalter Rechnung; im Blick der Forschung stehen aber auch konkrete Aspekte der aus dem Karolingerreich entstandenen Einzelnationen. Historische Ereignisse, z. B. die Herrschaft Napoleons oder die beiden Weltkriege im 20. Jahrhundert, stellen schließlich markante Bezugspunkte in den drei genannten Disziplinen dar. Methodisch und sachlich setzt dieser Band einen wichtigen Akzent, indem er den diachronen und synchronen Kulturtransfer bei der Erforschung von Erinnerungskulturen neu ins Zentrum der Forschung rückt

    Kurzfassung: Die Europäische Union ist kein neuer Staat. Sie ist fragmentiert, umkämpft, voll innerer Widersprüche. In wenigen Bereichen wird dies so deutlich wie im europäischen Grenzregime.Dieser Band versammelt die Ergebnisse einer intensiven vierjährigen Forschungsarbeit. Ausgehend von aktuellen Debatten materialistischer Staatstheorie und kritischer Europaforschung untersuchen die Beiträge mit der Methode der »historisch-materialistischen Politikanalyse« die Kämpfe um europäische Migrationspolitik. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei Konflikte in Deutschland, Spanien und Großbritannien sowie Auseinandersetzungen über zentrale Projekte der EU-Migrationspolitik: Blue Card, Frontex und Dublin II.

    Kurzfassung: Long description: A rapid development of religious popular cultures and lifestyles can be observed across the globe. This book provides unique case studies from Asia and Europe illustrating new religious practices, forms of articulation and mass mediatization, all of which render religious traditions significant for contemporary issues and concerns. The essays examine experiences of spirituality in combination with commercialization and expressive performative practices as well as everyday politics of identity.     Kurzfassung: World War I marks a well-known turning point in anthropology, and this volume is the first to examine the variety of forms it took in Europe. Distinct national traditions emerged and institutes were founded, partly due to collaborations with the military. Researchers in the cultural sciences used war zones to gain access to »informants«: prisoner-of-war and refugee camps, occupied territories, even the front lines. Anthropologists tailored their inquiries to aid the war effort, contributed to interpretations of the war as a »struggle« between »races«, and assessed the »warlike« nature of the Balkan region, whose crises were key to the outbreak of the Great War.

    Kurzfassung: How did medieval Europeans use and change their environments, think about the natural world, and try to handle the natural forces affecting their lives? This groundbreaking environmental history examines medieval relationships with the natural world from the perspective of social ecology, viewing human society as a hybrid of the cultural and the natural. Richard Hoffmann's interdisciplinary approach sheds important light on such central topics in medieval history as the decline of Rome, religious doctrine, urbanization and technology, as well as key environmental themes, among them energy use, sustainability, disease and climate change. Revealing the role of natural forces in events previously seen as purely human, the book explores issues including the treatment of animals, the 'tragedy of the commons', agricultural clearances and agrarian economies. By introducing medieval history in the context of social ecology, it brings the natural world into historiography as an agent and object of history itself

    Kurzfassung: Focusing on émigrés from Baden, Württemberg and Hungary in four host societies (Switzerland, the Ottoman Empire, England and the United States), Heléna Tóth considers exile in the aftermath of the revolutions of 1848–9 as a European phenomenon with global dimensions. While exile is often presented as an individual challenge, Tóth studies its collective aspects in the realms of the family and of professional and social networks. Exploring the interconnectedness of these areas, she argues that although we often like to sharply distinguish between labor migration and exile, these categories were anything but stable after the revolutions of 1848–9; migration belonged to the personal narrative of the revolution for a broad section of the population. Moreover, discussions about exile and amnesty played a central role in formulating the legacy of the revolutions not only for the émigrés but for their social environment and, ultimately, the governments of the restoration

    Kurzfassung: A distinct European perspective on Asia emerged in the late Middle Ages. Early reports of a homogeneous "India" of marvels and monsters gave way to accounts written by medieval travelers that indulged readers' curiosity about far-flung landscapes and cultures without exhibiting the attitudes evident in the later writings of aspiring imperialists. Mining the accounts of more than twenty Europeans who made---or claimed to have made---journeys to Mongolia, China, India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia between the mid-thirteenth and early sixteenth centuries, Kim Phillips reconstructs a medieval European vision of Asia that was by turns critical, neutral, and admiring. In offering a cultural history of the encounter between medieval Latin Christians and the distant East, Before Orientalism reveals how Europeans' prevailing preoccupations with food and eating habits, gender roles, sexualities, civility, and the foreign body helped shape their perceptions of Asian peoples and societies. Phillips gives particular attention to the texts' known or likely audiences, the cultural settings within which they found a foothold, and the broader impact of their descriptions, while also considering the motivations of their writers. She reveals in rich detail responses from European travelers that ranged from pragmatism to wonder. Fear of military might, admiration for high standards of civic life and court culture, and even delight in foreign magnificence rarely assumed the kind of secular Eurocentric superiority that would later characterize Orientalism. Placing medieval writing on the East in the context of an emergent "Europe" whose explorers sought to learn more than to rule, Before Orientalism complicates our understanding of medieval attitudes toward the foreign.

    Kurzfassung: Der deutsch- und englischsprachige Band enthält neun Essays von bekannten KanadistInnen aus Österreich, Deutschland und Kanada, die sich mit Immigration nach und Integration in Nordamerika beschäftigen: Wie wird dieses aktuelle Problem in Kanada bewältigt? Könnte das offiziell multikulturelle Kanada für Länder wie Österreich und Frankreich ein Muster sein? Neben der gelungenen Integration, die sich in Romanen von selbst nach Kanada eingewanderten ErzählerInnen spiegelt, belegen ethnische Autobiographien die früher auch in Kanada häufigen Probleme. Das Spannungsverhältnis beim transkulturellen Übergang erscheint als mögliche Inspirationsquelle, wobei Schriftsteller aus der Karibik ergiebige Untersuchungsobjekte sind. Die Einwanderung aus Österreich kommt ebenso zur Sprache wie die spezifische Auseinandersetzung mit der Immigration in Quebec, wo das Konzept des Interkulturalismus dominiert, sowie das Schicksal von Millionen illegaler Einwanderer in den USA. The volume comprises nine essays by prominent Canadianists from Austria, Germany and Canada who investigate in comparative fashion the problems of emigration / immigration to and integration in North America and some European countries, especially Austria and France. They inquire how this challenge has been met in Canada since the official adoption of multiculturalism and reflect on the possibility of Canada serving as a model for Europe. While contemporary novels by immigrants to Canada provide evidence of successful integration, ethnic autobiographies remind us of the existence of problems and prejudices in former times. The tensions experienced in the course of a transcultural transfer are shown to be a potential source of inspiration, with authors of Caribbean background providing fruitful examples. The waves of immigration from Austria are also described as is the specific approach to the challenge of immigration in the province of Quebec, through the adoption of the concept of interculturalism. Both the problems linked to immigration in France and the issue of the millions of undocumented immigrants from Latin America in the USA are considered.

    Kurzfassung: Das Konzept »transnationaler Räume« hat der Migrationssoziologie neue Impulse gegeben. Wenig Beachtung hingegen fand bisher die Pendelmigration deutsch-polnischer Doppelstaatler aus Oberschlesien - einer Region, die aus der ehemaligen Peripherie Deutschlands wie Polens inzwischen mitten in ein vereintes Europa gerückt ist.Dabei macht die wechselvolle Geschichte dieser historischen Grenzregion sie geradezu zu einem Paradebeispiel für das Phänomen »Transnationalismus«. Die hier analysierten Lebensgeschichten ihrer Einwohner_innen werfen Schlaglichter auf europäische Diskurse über soziale und politische Partizipation sowie auf individuelle und kollektive Identitätsbildung.

    Kurzfassung: This book brings together the contributions of twelve scholars engaged in language activism, in research and in promoting peace. The writers are keenly attuned to the potentially genocidal consequences of language differences. In the articles they have written, they make compelling cases for indigenous non-hegemonic languages to be used and promoted, not only as a means of communication but to preserve the multilingual communities inhabiting the world. The book is a product of a collegial effort resulting from a symposium on Language Policy and the Promotion of Peace or the Prevention of Conflict, which was held at the University of Osnabrück, Germany, in 2011. While many different 'angles of vision', positions, approaches and emphases are argued in the contributors' commentaries and in their case studies, the twelve scholars and activists are united in their call for a multilingual global habitus.
    Kurzfassung: Neville Edward Alexander, the principal editor of this compilation, spent about 30 years studying and making policy proposals about the language question in South Africa. In that country, eleven languages are officially recognised by the post-apartheid government, and yet only two, English and Afrikaans, enjoy high-status functions in official communications. Alexander persistently called for mother-tongue instruction for children in their formative years of schooling. Sadly, this radical scholar and acknowledged sociologist of language died of lung cancer while he was working on this volume in 2012. Arnulf von Scheliha, the co-editor of this compilation, is professor of Systematic Theology at the University of Osnabrück in Germany. His main research topics are political ethics, interreligious hermeneutics, history of theology, and transformation of religion in pluralistic societies.

    Kurzfassung: Religion is back again in Europe after never having been gone. It is manifest in the revival of religious institutions and traditions in former communist countries, in political controversies about the relationship between the church(es) and the state and about the freedom of religion and the freedom to criticize religion, and in public unease about religious minorities. This book is about religion and civil society in Europe. It moves from general theoretical and normative approaches of this relationship, via the examination of national patterns of religion-state relations, to in-depth analyses of the impact of religion and secularization on the values, pro-social attitudes and civic engagement of individuals. It covers Europe from the Lutheran North to the Catholic South, and from the secularized West to the Orthodox East and Islamic South-East with comparative analyses and country studies, concluding with an overall Europe-USA comparison.

Im ersten Teil des Bandes werden zentrale Themen wie die Sprache der Roma, die Romani Čhib, der Roma Education Fund und Roma betreffende Entwicklungen in Südosteuropa im Überblick behandelt. Der zweite Teil umfasst Beiträge zu den Lebens- und Bildungssituationen von Roma in ausgewählten Staaten. Berichtet und erörtert werden historische Hintergrundinformationen, empirisch gewonnene Daten und aktuelle Entwicklungen sowie Ansätze zu einer Bearbeitung der Bildungsbenachteiligung von Roma. Mit den Beiträgen ist das Anliegen verknüpft, Impulse für vertiefende Auseinandersetzungen mit den Lebens- und Bildungssituationen von Roma zu geben und sie stärker in den Fokus der Erziehungswissenschaft zu rücken.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: The book presents an array of perspectives on the vivid cultural and literary politics that marked the period immediately after the October Revolution of 1917, when Russian writers had to relocate to Berlin and Paris under harsh conditions. Divided amongst themselves and uncertain about the political and artistic directions of life in the diaspora, these writers carried on two simultaneous literary dialogues: with the emerging Soviet Union and with the dizzying world of European modernism that surrounded them in the West. Chapters address generational differences, literary polemics and experimentation, the heritage of pre-October Russian modernism, and the fate of individual writers and critics, offering a sweeping view of how exiles created a literary diaspora. The discussion moves beyond Russian studies to contribute to today's broad, cross-cultural study of the creative side of political and cultural displacement

    Kurzfassung: Europe - Space for Transcultural Existence? is the first volume of the new series, Studies in Euroculture, published by Göttingen University Press. The series derives its name from the Erasmus Mundus Master of Excellence Euroculture: Europe in the Wider World, a two year programme offered by a consortium of eight European universities in collaboration with four partner universities outside Europe. This master highlights regional, national and supranational dimensions of the European democratic development; mobility, migration and inter-, multi- and transculturality. The impact of culture is understood as an element of political and social development within Europe. The articles published here explore the field of Euroculture in its different elements: it includes topics such as cosmopolitanism, cultural memory and traumatic past(s), colonial heritage, democratization and Europeanization as well as the concept of (European) identity in various disciplinary contexts such as law and the social sciences. In which way have Europeanization and Globalization influenced life in Europe more specifically? To what extent have people in Europe turned ‘transcultural’? The ‘trans’ is understood as indicator of an overlapping mix of cultures that does not allow for the construction of sharp differentiations. It is explored in topics such as (im)migration and integration, as well as cultural products and lifestyle. The present economic crisis and debt crisis have led, as side-result, to a public attack on the open, cosmopolitan outlook of Europe. The values of the multicultural and civil society and the idea of a people’s Europe have become debatable. This volume offers food for thought and critical reflection.

    Kurzfassung: The concept and study of orientalism in Western culture gained a changed understanding from Edward Said's now iconic 1978 book Orientalism. Especially in Germany, however, recent debate has moved beyond Said's definition ofthe phenomenon, highlighting the multiple forms of orientalism within the "West," the manifold presence of the "East" in the Western world, indeed the epistemological fragility of the ideas of "Occident" and "Orient" as such.This volume focuses on the deployment -- here the cultural, philosophical, political, and scholarly uses -- of "orientalism" in the German-speaking and Central and Eastern European worlds from the late eighteenth century to thepresent day. Its interdisciplinary approach combines distinguished contributions by Indian scholars, who approach the topic of orientalism through the prism of German studies as practiced in Asia, with representative chapters by senior German, Austrian, and English-speaking scholars working at the intersection of German and oriental studies. Culture, according to Walter Benjamin, has always been an expression of dominance.Considering the example of the Berlin Conference, during which representatives from European politics and civil society discussed »Europe's soul«, Lars Alberth works out from a discourse analytical perspective which partisan narratives of European culture are developed, against which non-European outsiders these are directed, and who is thereby recognized as a part of Europe or systematically excluded and forgotten

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: In Europe, national states belonging to different welfare and caring regimes are experiencing tensions between labour market restructuring constraints and the caring responsibilities of the households. This book contributes to the analysis of these tensions by focusing on carers "under pressure" who have to juggle working and caring responsibilities. It investigates the care arrangements set up by bi-active parents of young children who have non-standard working hours and of adult children who hold a job and have caring responsibilities towards their old parent. Based on empirical evidence from six European countries, the book combines two levels of analysis: the policy level and the family level. It questions on the one hand the national policies in the sectors of childcare, elderly care and work-life balance, as well as the impact of gender equality measures promoted by European institutions; and on the other hand highlights the carers' practices and the impact of conciliation on everyday life

    Kurzfassung: Current ecological and environmental problems put the concept of nature more and more into the center of debates. This book presents analyses and case studies that explore the function and meaning of nature within the process of modernization at the epochal threshold of 1900 anew. In a trans-national, Northern European comparison, the contributions address the medial representations of nature (in literature, philosophy, film, photography) as well as the colonization of space (in tourism, travels, sports, environmental and cultural heritage protection).
