    Abstract: Nach dem Beginn der Luftangriffe auf die Taliban fragte die BBC einen afghanischen Hufschmied, wie er sich die plötzlichen Bombardements erkläre. Die Al-Qaida, antwortete dieser, habe wohl viele Amerikaner mitsamt ihrer Esel getötet und zwei ihrer Burgen zerstört.Die Episode belegt die Bedeutung der Medien für unsere Interpretation der Welt. Im globalen Zeitalter ist diese notwendig ungleichzeitig und polyperspektiv. Damit sind viele demokratische Modelle überholt, die von der Retrofiktion der griechischen Polis ausgehen, in der die Menschen an einem Ort zusammenkommen, beraten und entscheiden. In der Mediapolis, so Roger Silverstone, erleben wir einen Strukturwandel hin zu einer virtuellen, kosmopolitischen Öffentlichkeit, die unser Wissen und unsere Erfahrungen prägt. Ausgehend von Hannah Arendt, Ulrich Beck und Jürgen Habermas, entwirft Silverstone eine neue Ethik der Massenmedien, eine Ethik der Gastfreundschaft, der Verpflichtung und der Verantwortung.
