    Abstract: Olympe de Gouges, though a well-known historical figure, has not been investigated as a philosopher until quite recently. Yet, many of her writings have philosophical import, whether they are written in the genre of the philosophical treatise, drama or political pamphlets. In the three main sections, the author gives an overview of some of her arguments, showing their originality and their relevance to debates contemporary to her and to us. In the introduction, the author addresses the question of genre and argue that Gouges should be read as a philosopher, as well as a playwright and political writer. In the conclusion, the author draws out the relevance of her work for contemporary philosophers

    Abstract: Our conception of the culture and values of the ancient Greco-Roman world is largely based on texts and material evidence left behind by a small and atypical group of city-dwellers. The people of the deep Mediterranean countryside seldom appear in the historical record from antiquity, and almost never as historical actors. This book is the first extended historical ethnography of an ancient village society, based on an extraordinarily rich body of funerary and propitiatory inscriptions from a remote upland region of Roman Asia Minor. Rural kinship structures and household forms are analysed in detail, as are the region's demography, religious life, gender relations, class structure, normative standards and values. Roman north-east Lydia is perhaps the only non-urban society in the Greco-Roman world whose culture can be described at so fine-grained a level of detail: a world of tight-knit families, egalitarian values, hard agricultural labour, village solidarity, honour, piety and love

    Abstract: This book, by a leading authority on early modern social and cultural history, examines in detail how an important English aristocrat managed his horses. At the same time, it discusses how horses and the uses to which they were put were a very significant social statement and a forceful assertion of status and the right to political power. Based on detailed original research in the archives of Chatsworth House, the book explores the breeding and rearing, the buying and selling, and the care and maintenance of horses, showing how these activities fitted in to the overall management of the earl's large estates. It outlines the uses of horses as the earl and his retinue travelled to and from family, the county assizes and quarter sessions, social visits and London for "the season" and to attend Court and Parliament. It also considers the use of horses in sport: hawking, hunting, racing and the other ways in which visitors were entertained. Overall, the book provides a great deal of detail on the management of horses in the period and also on the yearly cycle of activities of a typical aristocrat engaged in service, pleasure and power. PETER EDWARDS is an Emeritus Professor of Early Modern British Social History at the University of Roehampton. He has published numerous books including The Horse Trade of Tudor and Stuart England and Horse and Man in Early Modern England

    Abstract: Als Reaktion auf die Kolonialisierung weiter Teile der islamischen Welt durch westliche Mächte entstand eine neue geistige Strömung, die besonders darauf bedacht war, den Islam den modernen Zeiten anzupassen. Dieser Reformdiskurs erfasste alle Teile der islamischen Welt und man diskutierte vielerorts die Frage einer Reformfähigkeit des Islams. Die vorliegende Studie beschäftigt sich mit dem tunesischen Reformdenker at-Tahir al-Haddad (1899-1935), der der islamwissenschaftlichen Forschung trotz seines langjährigen Wirkens bislang unbekannt geblieben ist, und seinem Werk "Die tunesische Frau in Gesetz und Gesellschaft". Mit diesem Werk verfolgte al-Haddad die Absicht, hinsichtlich der Frauenproblematik die traditionelle tunesische in eine moderne Gesellschaft umzuformen. Er löste damit jedoch eine Welle der Empörung und Ablehnung aus, die sich auf dramatische Weise auf sein Leben auswirken sollte. Erst zwei Jahrzehnte nach seinem Tod konnten die Gedanken des verkannten Reformers auf die Gestaltung der tunesischen Gesellschaft Einfluss nehmen.

    Abstract: Die Entstehung der Soziologie lässt sich durch die berühmte Forderung Émile Durkheims zusammenfassen: Soziales nur durch Soziales erklären. Ihre Geschichte ist also mit dem Versprechen verknüpft, die soziale Wirklichkeit unter Ausschluss alles Nicht-Sozialen zu erforschen - womit die Perspektive auf den Menschen verdrängt wird. Doch kann der Mensch aus der Soziologie überhaupt verdrängt werden? Rafael Alvear Moreno reflektiert diese Frage in Hinblick auf die Beschreibung der Motive und Konsequenzen des genannten Versprechens anhand der Großtheorien von Jürgen Habermas und Niklas Luhmann. Seine Untersuchung wird dabei von der dialektischen Figur durchkreuzt, dass es keine Verdrängung ohne Einbeziehung gibt - was unmittelbar in eine soziologische Anthropologie führt

    Abstract: An in-depth exploration of the flight of young Jewish women from their Orthodox homes during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuriesThe Rebellion of the Daughters investigates the flight of young Jewish women from their Orthodox, mostly Hasidic, homes in Western Galicia (now Poland) in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In extreme cases, hundreds of these women sought refuge in a Kraków convent, where many converted to Catholicism. Those who stayed home often remained Jewish in name only.Relying on a wealth of archival documents, including court testimonies, letters, diaries, and press reports, Rachel Manekin reconstructs the stories of three Jewish women runaways and reveals their struggles and innermost convictions. Unlike Orthodox Jewish boys, who attended traditional schools where only Jewish subjects were taught ("cheders"), Orthodox Jewish girls were sent to Polish primary schools. When the time came for them to marry, many young women rebelled against the marriages arranged by their parents, with some wishing to pursue secondary and university education. After World War I, the crisis of the rebellious daughters in Kraków spurred the introduction of formal religious education for young Orthodox Jewish women in Poland, which later developed into a worldwide educational movement. Manekin chronicles the belated Orthodox response and argues that these educational innovations not only kept Orthodox Jewish women within the fold but also foreclosed their opportunities for higher education.Exploring the estrangement of young Jewish women from traditional Judaism in Habsburg Galicia at the turn of the twentieth century, The Rebellion of the Daughters brings to light a forgotten yet significant episode in Eastern European history

    Abstract: American political observers express increasing concern about affective polarization, i.e., partisans' resentment toward political opponents. We advance debates about America's partisan divisions by comparing affective polarization in the US over the past 25 years with affective polarization in 19 other western publics. We conclude that American affective polarization is not extreme in comparative perspective, although Americans' dislike of partisan opponents has increased more rapidly since the mid-1990s than in most other Western publics. We then show that affective polarization is more intense when unemployment and inequality are high; when political elites clash over cultural issues such as immigration and national identity; and in countries with majoritarian electoral institutions. Our findings situate American partisan resentment and hostility in comparative perspective, and illuminate correlates of affective polarization that are difficult to detect when examining the American case in isolation

    Abstract: As If She Were Free brings together the biographies of twenty-four women of African descent to reveal how enslaved and recently freed women sought, imagined, and found freedom from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries in the Americas. Our biographical approach allows readers to view large social processes - migration, trade, enslavement, emancipation - through the perspective of individual women moving across the boundaries of slavery and freedom. For some women, freedom meant liberation and legal protection from slavery, while others focused on gaining economic, personal, political, and social rights. Rather than simply defining emancipation as a legal status that was conferred by those in authority and framing women as passive recipients of freedom, these life stories demonstrate that women were agents of emancipation, claiming free status in the courts, fighting for liberty, and defining and experiencing freedom in a surprising and inspiring range of ways

In Infamous Bodies Samantha Pinto explores how histories of these black women and their ongoing fame generate new ways of imagining black feminist futures. Drawing on a variety of media, cultural, legal, and critical sources, Pinto shows how key political concepts such as freedom, consent, contract, citizenship, and sovereignty are shaped by the narratives surrounding these eighteenth- and nineteenth-century celebrities. Whether analyzing Wheatley's fame in relation to conceptions of race and freedom, notions of consent in Hemings' relationship with Thomas Jefferson, or Baartman's ability to enter into legal contracts, Pinto reveals the centrality of race, gender, and sexuality in the formation of political rights. In so doing, she contends that feminist theories of black women's vulnerable embodiment can be the starting point for future progressive political projects

    Abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit folgt Foucault in der Annahme, dass der zoologische Garten eine Heterotopie, ein Anderer Raum ist. Dies führte zur Forschungsfrage, wodurch er sich zu einem solchen Raum konstituiert, wie er sich als solcher produziert und reproduziert, durch wen oder was und wie er hergestellt wird und welche Funktionen er in der Gesellschaft erfüllt. Diese Arbeit untersucht den Anderen Raum primär im Zoo Zürich und im Tiergarten Schönbrunn. Hier gibt es Regenwaldhallen, die eigenständige Ökosysteme simulieren. Sie bündeln heterotopische Eigenschaften der Zoos wie unter einem Brennglas. Für die explorative Annäherung an die Heterotopie Zoo bot sich die ethnographische Methode an. Ihre vielfältigen Forschungserträge bilden den Kern dieser Arbeit; gerahmt werden sie von einer historischen Darstellung zoologischer Gärten und von raumsoziologischen Betrachtungen. Gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen schrieben sich in den letzten sechzig Jahren deutlich in die Heterotopie Zoo ein. Sie ist seither wirkmächtige Teilnehmerin an diesen Prozessen und bestimmt gesellschaftliche Werte mit. Mit ihren Aktivitäten wirkt sie in den Rest-Raum hinein, so dass eine wechselseitige Beeinflussung stattfindet.

Three analytical approaches are introduced and compared, describing a wide range of texts from the perspectives of register, genre, and style. The primary focus of the book is on the analysis of registers. Part 1 introduces an analytical framework for studying registers, genre conventions, and styles. Part 2 provides detailed descriptions of particular text varieties in English, including spoken interpersonal varieties (conversation, university office hours, service encounters), written varieties (newspapers, academic prose, fiction), and emerging electronic varieties (e-mail, internet forums, text messages). Finally, Part 3 introduces advanced analytical approaches using corpora, and discusses theoretical concerns, such as the place of register studies in linguistics, and practical applications of register analysis.     Abstract: This interdisciplinary study explores how classical ideals of generosity influenced the writing and practice of gift giving in medieval Europe. In assuming that medieval gift giving was shaped by oral 'folk models', historians have traditionally followed in the footsteps of social anthropologists and sociologists such as Marcel Mauss and Pierre Bourdieu. This first in-depth investigation into the influence of the classical ideals of generosity and gift giving in medieval Europe reveals to the contrary how historians have underestimated the impact of classical literature and philosophy on medieval culture and ritual. Focusing on the idea of the gift expounded in the classical texts read most widely in the Middle Ages, including Seneca the Younger's De beneficiis and Cicero's De officiis, Lars Kjær investigates how these ideas were received, adapted and utilised by medieval writers across a range of genres, and how they influenced the practice of generosity

    Abstract: It is a commonly held assumption among cultural, social, and political psychologists that imagining the future of societies we live in has the potential to change how we think and act in the world. However little research has been devoted to whether this effect exists in collective imaginations, of social groups, communities and nations, for instance. This book explores the part that imagination and creativity play in the construction of collective futures, and the diversity of outlets in which these are presented, from fiction and cultural symbols to science and technology. The authors discuss this effect in social phenomena such as in intergroup conflict and social change, and focus on several cases studies to illustrate how the imagination of collective futures can guide social and political action. This book brings together theoretical and empirical contributions from cultural, social, and political psychology to offer insight into our constant (re)imagination of the societies in which we live

Viele von ihnen sind Kommunikationsexperten. Doch Kommunikation ist bei ihnen mehr als nur eine Kompetenz unter vielen - sie ist die Kernkompetenz der Nichtregierungsorganisationen. An ihrer Kommunikationsfähigkeit bemisst sich ihr Erfolg. Dieses Buch sammelt und systematisiert das aktuelle Wissen zur Kommunikation von NGO auf interdisziplinärer und internationaler Basis. Nadine Remus ist Senior Kommunikationsmanagerin der GEMA und Doktorantin an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.     Abstract: In this book, Hella Eckardt offers new insights into literacy in the Roman world by examining the tools that enabled writing, such as inkwells, styli and tablets. Literacy was an important skill in the ancient world and power could be and often was, exercised through texts. Eckardt explores how writing equipment shaped practices such as posture and handwriting and her careful analysis of burial data shows considerable numbers of women and children interred with writing equipment, notably inkwells, in an effort to display status as well as age and gender. The volume offers a comprehensive review of recent approaches to literacy during Roman antiquity and adds a distinctive material turn to our understanding of this crucial skill and the embodied practices of its use. At the heart of this study lies the nature of the relationship between the material culture of writing and socio-cultural identities in the Roman period

    Abstract: Im Zentrum des Bandes stehen die Rahmenbedingungen heutiger Elternschaft. Dazu gehören rechtliche und politische Reformen der letzten Jahre genauso wie Unterstützungsangebote an Eltern, aber auch die Angebote der Arbeitswelt. Dabei kann durchaus von einer Neugewichtung des Kooperationsverhältnisses zwischen Eltern, Staat und Gesellschaft gesprochen werden, denn Elternschaft hat sich gewandelt. Sie ist heute vielfältig und oft weniger an formale Voraussetzungen wie Ehe gebunden als früher. Nicht zuletzt werfen viele Trennungen und Scheidungen Fragen nach dem Verhältnis von leiblicher und sozialer Elternschaft auf. Vater- und Mutterrollen haben sich stark verändert und müssen im Paarverhältnis und mit der sozialen Umwelt neu aufeinander abgestimmt werden. Dies gilt auch für das Verhältnis zur familialen Umwelt, insbesondere im Arbeitsleben und im Betreuungs- und Bildungssystem.

Gefragt wird, inwiefern in der Spätmoderne Beschleunigung und Optimierung Auswirkungen auf das Wohlbefinden von Heranwachsenden haben und auf welche Weise sie von Mutter und Vater mit einer Erziehung des Beratens unterstützt werden. Entstanden ist ein neues Eltern-Kind-Verhältnis, welche sie bei der Entfaltung von Bewältigungsstrategien im Umgang mit Vielfalt und eines guten Wohlbefindens befördert. Um die Thesen und empirischen Befunde zu diskutieren und Konturen einer spätmodernen Jugend zu skizzieren, setzen wir am Diskurs der Jugendforschung an und nehmen Annahmen der Forschung über Wohlbefinden auf.

    Abstract: In China: Promise or Threat? Helle compares the cultures of China and the West through both private and public spheres. For China, the private sphere of family life is well developed while behaviour in public relating to matters of government and the law is less reliable. In contrast, the West operates in reverse.
