Abstract: "In 1585, at the height of the Jesuit missionary activity in Japan, which was begun by Francis Xavier in 1549, Luis Frois, a long-time missionary in Japan, drafted the earliest systematic comparison of Western and Japanese cultures. This book constitutes the first critical English-language edition of the 1585 work, the original of which was discovered in the Royal Academy of History in Madrid after the Second World War. The book provides a translation of the text, which is not a continuous narrative, but rather more than 600 distichs or brief couplets on subjects such as gender, child rearing, religion, medicine, eating, horses, writing, ships and seafaring, architecture, and music and drama. In addition, the book includes a substantive introduction and other editorial material to explain the background and also to make comparisons with present-day Japanese life. Overall, the book represents an important primary source for understanding a particularly challenging period of Japanese history and culture. "--

Abstract: "How do young people construct their identities in the complexity of their own country, belonging to the European Union, and being part of global society? This book is based on a unique empirical study of a thousand young people, aged between eleven and nineteen, from fifteen European countries. Covering East European states that joined the EU between 2004 and 2008, and the candidate states of Macedonia, Turkey, Iceland and Croatia, the complex interwoven narratives of young Europeans present an intricate and intriguing analysis of how identities are constructed. Alistair Ross offers a significant original contribution to the literature on identities, providing a wealth of cross-national data and a wide range of significant theoretical possibilities across a group of related disciplinary areas. Fluid narratives of the self are shown to constitute a rich pattern that varies and modifies as it is seen through the different lenses of national culture, European institutions, and of outsiders. Themes explored include: - the construction of identity - the ability to express multiple identities - agency and liminality - what being a European might mean - an emerging sense of contemporary nationalism and patriotism. This book explains how young people frame their identities, drawing on discourses of culture and society and constructing them through interchanges with friends, family and the media. It will be of interest to academics and researchers in the fields of political sociology, education, European studies, and ethnicity and identity studies"--

Abstract: "Diversity in Organizations unflinchingly presents compelling evidence that directly links diversity to the bottom line and provides concrete advice and guidance to those who seek to implement diversity programs and initiatives in their organizations"--
Abstract: "Diversity in Organizations argues that ensuring a diverse workforce composition has tangible benefits for business organizations. Rather than relying on touchy-feely arguments, Herring and Henderson present compelling evidence that directly links diversity to the bottom line. However, the book goes beyond merely arguing that we should embrace diversity because it is profitable; it shows that the true power of diversity lies in its potential as a catalyst and incubator for innovation.Critical diversity is a forceful theory that argues for the relationship between workforce composition and the business case for diversity. Contrasting critical diversity with other notions of diversity (such as colorblind, segregated and snowflake diversity), the book offers real life solutions to the political problems that arise from implementing diversity initiatives, and examines why some of these initiatives remain unpopular. Readers will learn:How and why diversity is related to business performanceWhat the impact of diversity training programs is on productivity, business performance and promotions. What the biggest mistakes in diversity management are, and how to avoid themWhat can be done to make diversity initiatives more effective and politically palatableHow to measure levels of success in diversity initiatives in rigorous but non-technical ways so that managers and teams accountable for diversity practices can achieve their desired resultsThe theory is presented in an accessible manner without shying away from the contentious aspects of diversity that confront our society. The book also provides concrete advice and guidance to those who seek to implement diversity programs and initiatives in their organizations, and to make their companies more competitive. Not only is it a compelling read, but students taking classes in diversity, human resource management, sociology of work, and organizational psychology will find this a comprehensive, helpful resource"--

Abstract: Popularizing National Pasts is the first truly cross-national and comparative study of popular national histories, their representations, the meanings given to them and their uses, which expands outside the confines of Western Europe and the US. It draws a picture of popular histories which is European in the full sense of this term. One of its fortes is the inclusion of Eastern Europe. The cross-national angle of Popularizing National Pasts is apparent in the scope of its comparative project, as well as that of the longue durée it covers. Apart from essays on Britain, France, and Germany, the collection includes studies of popular histories in Scandinavia, Eastern and Southern Europe, notably Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Armenia, Russia and the Ukraine, as well as considering the US and Argentina. Cross-national comparison is also a central concern of the thirteen case studies in the volume, which are, each, devoted to comparing between two, or more, national historical cultures. Thus temporality -both continuities and breaks- in popular notions of the past, its interpretations and consumption, is examined in the long continuum. The volume makes available to English readers, probably for the first time, the cutting edge of Eastern European scholarship on popular histories, nationalism and culture.
