Abstract: "Welfare mothers are popularly viewed as passively dependent on their checks and averse to work. Reformers across the political spectrum advocate moving these women off the welfare rolls and into the labor force as the solution to their problems. Making Ends Meet offers dramatic evidence toward a different conclusion: In the present labor market, unskilled single mothers who hold jobs are frequently worse off than those on welfare, and neither welfare nor low-wage employment alone will support a family at subsistence levels." "Kathryn Edin and Laura Lein interviewed nearly four hundred welfare and low-income single mothers from cities in four states over a six-year period. They learned the reality of these mothers' struggles to provide for their families: where their money comes from, what they spend it on, how they cope with their children's needs and what hardships they suffer." "Making Ends Meet is a realistic look at a world that many would change yet few understand. If this country's efforts to improve the self-sufficiency of female-headed families are to succeed, reformers must move beyond the myths of welfare dependency and deal with the hard realities of an unrewarding American labor market, the lack of affordable health insurance and child care for single mothers who work, and the true cost of subsistence living."--BOOK JACKET.

Abstract: "Fifty years after the publication of An American Dilemma, Gunnar Myrdal's epochal study of racism and black disadvantage, An American Dilemma Revisited confronts the pivotal issue of race in American society and explores how the status of African Americans has changed over the past half century. Using Myrdal as a benchmark, the contributors analyze historical developments, examine current conditions, and investigate strategies for positive change within the core arenas of modern societypolitical, economic, educational, and judicial." "The central question posed by this volume is whether the presence of a disproportionately African American "underclass" has become a permanent phenomenon. Several contributors tie the unevenness of black economic mobility to educational limitations, social isolation, and changing workplace demands. The evolution of a more suburban, service-dominated economy that favors advanced academic training has severely constrained the employment prospects of many urban African Americans with limited education. An American Dilemma Revisited argues that there is hope to be found in black educational institutions, black community enterprises, and the social activism of African Americans at the local level."--BOOK JACKET.

Abstract: The original, often controversial, research presented in this book links marital decline to a pivotal drop in the pool of marriageable black males. Increased joblessness has robbed many black men of their economic viability, rendering them not only less desirable as mates, but also less inclined to take on the responsibility of marriage. Higher death rates resulting from disease, poor health care, and violent crime, as well as evergrowing incarceration rates, have further depleted the male population. In documenting their observations, editors M. Belinda Tucker and Claudia Mitchell-Kernan and the contributors take a hard look at the effects of chronic economic instability on cultural attitudes toward the male role as family provider. Their cogent historical analyses suggest that the influence of external circumstances over marriage preferences stems in large part from the profoundly damaging experience of slavery
Abstract: The Decline in Marriage Among African Americans firmly positions declining marriage within an ominous cycle of economic and social erosion that finds increasing numbers of women struggling to raise children and manage families alone. The authors of concluding essays propose specific policies for relieving the problems associated with changing marital behavior, focusing on economic and healthcare support for single parent families, improved public education, and expanded employment opportunities for African American men
