    Migrating skills, skilled migrants and migration skills : The influence of contexts on the validation of migrants’ skills (2014)

    Abstract: Notions of skill are geographically and historically specific; migration regimes, professional regulations and national policies influence possibilities of effective validation of migrant knowledge abroad. Migration scholars convincingly demonstrate how migrants actively circumvent national requirements to fit into the dominant culture of the society of residence while preserving their own identities. Yet, without exception, social inequalities research exclusively addresses the integration of migrants into the receiving context, taking skills as a fixed attribute migrants simply ‘bring with them’. I argue that the context of origin of migrants for skill acquisition and validation during the migration process needs to be considered as well. The way skills are defined, acquired and valorised in the country of origin has an influence on how migrants mobilise them in the receiving society and on how they perceive their chances for negotiating strong positions in the labour market of the host country. The article draws on a study of Polish migrants to the UK with secondary and tertiary educational certificates who work in routine or semi-routine occupations.

    Abstract: The article discusses how post-2004 Polish immigrants in Great Britain narrate success and failure in their lives. It identifies and analyses inter-related narrations specific to the transnational form of migration. It considers migrants’ transnational orientation as a resource for narratively producing a successful biography. The article makes use of a biographical perspective and embeds the analysis in theories of biographical action, while adding new knowledge to the scholarship of migration. It argues that failure is relative to a normatively, locally fixed expectation of success.

    Abstract: My contribution studies in-depth how Polish entrepreneurs in Munich, Germany, make use of their economic, social, and cultural capital acquired in Poland and in Germany to position themselves transnationally. I study these migrants’ life courses and draw attention to cross-border intersections between their cultural, social, and economic capital with roots in different places. I also throw light on the subjective evaluation of economic capital of migrants in a transnational frame. I discern three types of transnational social positioning of the migrants (single space, bi-local and overlapping), which suggest a new reading of Bourdieu’s work that is better adapted to the theoretical challenges faced by researchers who study people in transnational spaces.

    Abstract: Müsste ich meine „Lehr-Erfahrungen“ in einem Satz zusammenfassen, so würde dieser lauten: „Ich habe schon immer gegen die Langeweile gekämpft – als Studentin und als Dozentin, egal ob in Polen oder in Deutschland“. Wie kommt aber dazu, dass sich die Langeweile immer wieder und vielerorts an den Universitäten breitmacht? Wie kann ich – wie kann man – sie bekämpfen? Ich denke, dass das in erster Linie mit Pragmatismus, Idealismus und deren Balance zu tun hat.

    Abstract: Do transnational mobile professionals live in a borderless world? How do they make sense of heterogeneity that they experience during their travel? These questions are central to this paper which investigates the ‘invisible’ boundaries in the world that is dominated by global networks of infrastructure and in which nation-state borders lose their relevance to individuals. On the basis of interviews with mobile professionals the paper discusses the condition of borderlessness that they claim to experience as well as their strategies of managing the difference and asks how they distinguish between ‘here’ and ‘there’ and ‘us’ and ‘them’. The paper focuses on their mundane activities to show that their discontinuity marks boundaries between particular spaces.

    Abstract: Wenn junge Erwachsene aus Polen nach Deutschland kommen, beginnt für sie eine Reise, die nicht unbedingt ein klares Ende hat. Diese Reise – auch durch ein wissenschaftliches Forschungsfeld – ist Gegenstand dieses Kapitels. Ich werde die Situation junger Polen skizzieren, die sich in einem Lebensabschnitt für ein Studium in Deutschland entschieden haben, die Gründe dafür besprechen und fragen, was sie nach dem Abschluss ihres Studiums machen. Die Wahl des Studiums gehört sicherlich zu den wichtigsten Entscheidungen im Leben. Wenn sie aber von Migration begleitet ist, ist sie auch von Bedeutung für ganze Gesellschaften, die von der Präsenz junger, dynamischer und talentierter Leute profitieren oder von deren Abwesenheit negativ betroffen sind. Für diese Konsequenzen interessiert sich die Wissenschaft, deren Sicht ich hier ebenfalls kurz präsentieren werde.
