Abstract: "This book explores the cultural and religious politics of the contemporary food movement, starting from the example of Jewish foodies, their zeal for pig (forbidden by Jewish law), and their talk about why ignoring traditional precepts around food is desirable. Focusing on the work of Michael Pollan, Jonathan Schorsch questions the modernist, materialist, and rationalist worldview of many foodies and discusses their lack of attention to culture, tradition, and religion. Abstract: What lies at the foundation of our moral beliefs? If we dig down far enough do we find that our moral values have no ground at all to stand on, and so are apt to collapse upon serious philosophical investigation? This book seeks to answer these and related questions by positing an indubitable foundation for our moral beliefs - they arise from the phenomenon of ‘primary recognition’, and are fundamentally shaped by ‘basic moral certainties’. Drawing on philosophers such as Ludwig Wittgenstein and Knud Ejler Løgstrup, this book draws together insights from both Analytic and Continental philosophy to provide a convincing new picture of our moral foundations. And it does so in a way that eschews moral conservativism and opens the way for a rich understanding of the variety and particularity of our human moral systems, while also keeping a significant place for those moral beliefs that occur universally, across cultures

Abstract: The end of socialism in the Soviet Union and its satellite states ushered in a new era of choice. Yet the idea that people are really free to live as they choose turns out to be problematic. Personal choice is limited by a range of factors such as a person’s economic situation, class, age, government policies and social expectations, especially regarding gender roles. Furthermore, the notion of free choice is a crucial feature of capitalist ideology, and can be manipulated in the interests of the market. This edited collection explores the complexity of choice in Russia and Ukraine. The contributors explore how the new choices available to people after the collapse of the Soviet Union have interacted with and influenced gender identities and gender, and how choice has become one of the driving forces of class-formation in countries which were, in the Soviet era, supposedly classless. The book will of interest to students and scholars across a range of subjects including gender and sexualities studies, history, sociology and political science

Abstract: This book explores the regional coordination and impact of state responses to irregular migration in Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The main argument is that regional and international trends of securitisation and criminalisation of irregular migration, often associated with framing the issue in terms of migrant smuggling and human trafficking, have intensified carceral border regimes and produced greater precarity for migrants. Bilateral and multilateral processes of regional coordination at multiple levels of government are analysed with a focus on the impact on asylum seekers and migrant workers in major destination and transit countries including Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, and Australia. The book will be of interest to a wide academic audience interested in the interdisciplinary field of Border Studies, as well as general readers concerned with the treatment of refugees and migrant workers who cross borders in search of safety, security, and a better life

Abstract: This book provides a novel formulation and defence of moral error theory. It also provides a novel solution to the so-called now what question; viz., the question what we should do with our moral thought and talk after moral error theory. The novel formulation of moral error theory uses pragmatic presupposition rather than conceptual entailment to argue that moral judgments carry a non-negotiable commitment to categorical moral reasons. The new answer to the now what question is pragmatic presupposition substitutionism: we should substitute our current moral judgments, which pragmatically presuppose the existence of categorical moral reasons with ‘schmoral’ judgments that pragmatically presuppose the existence of a specific class of prudential reasons. These are prudential reasons that, when we act on them, contribute to the satisfaction of what the author calls ‘the fundamental desire’; namely, the desire to live in a world with mutually beneficial cooperation

Abstract: This book offers a new alternative to understanding the relationship between China and Africa. Here, the author not only explores the changing nature of Ethiopia’s internal politics as a result of Chinese investment and commercial links, but also compellingly questions the existing state-centric macro or strategic investigation of China-Africa relations. By thoroughly reviewing and deploying the ‘second image reversed’ approach and the relational concept of state power analytical approaches, Ziso challenges the Western-centric Weberian conceptualization of state. This volume presents an eclectic approach to interpret the state transformation in Ethiopia in light of Chinese capital, arguing for a “state in society” framework which does not treat the state as a unitary black box. This analysis challenges the conventional binary staple which is often framed on whether China is the new imperialist power plundering Africa’s resources or is Africa’s historically all-weather friend. This volume offers an original contribution to knowledge on China’s relations with Ethiopia in particular, and with Africa in general. Edson Ziso is a Visiting Research Fellow in the Department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Adelaide, South Australia

Abstract: ‘This pathbreaking study shows that anti-(African) immigrant rhetoric is part of a widespread ethno-centric political vernacular and demonstrates how these negative ethnic stereotypes have arisen from severe economic inequalities and the uneven development. This is a deeply grounded analysis of local-level ethno-centrism which places the issue firmly in the context of the local and global political economy. It deserves a wide readership.’ -Don Robotham, City University of New York, USA ‘This is a must read not only for scholars in the emerging field of the sociolinguistics of (de)coloniality and globalisation, but also those interested in language and the political and ideological formations in the construction of nation-states in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Australia.’ -Felix Banda, University of the Western Cape, South Africa ‘Professor Finex Ndhlovu’s is an important voice in the field of language studies. His trade mark being the careful but consistent contextualization of knotty language questions within the broader terrain of equally complex identitarian politics, while at the same time bringing into creative dialogue African and non-African empirical case studies to demonstrate the global implications and resonance of his research findings.’ -Sabelo J Ndlovu-Gatsheni, University of South Africa This book examines the linguistic and discursive elements of social and economic policies and national political leader statements to read new meanings into debates on border protection, national sovereignty, immigration, economic indigenisation, land reform and black economic empowerment. It adds a fresh angle to the debate on nationalisms and transnationalism by pushing forward a more applied agenda to establish a clear and empirically-based illustration of the contradictions in current policy frameworks around the world and the debates they invite. The author’s novel vernacular discourse approach contributes new points of method and interpretation that will advance scholarly conversations on nationalisms, transnationalism and other forms of identity imaginings in a transient world. Finex Ndhlovu is Associate Professor of Language in Society at the University of New England, Australia, Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, USA, and Visiting Research Professor at the University of South Africa

Abstract: This book examines the socio-political conflicts which have arisen since Hong Kong’s return to China and confronts the fundamental problems in the design of the One Country, Two Systems (OCTS) Model. It considers not only the issue of democratization, but also the institutional fractures in the executive-dominant political system and the disconnection between the executive and the legislature. It describes the drastic changes which have affected social mobilization and political activism in Hong Kong, as well as the pattern of interaction between the government and civil society. Co-edited by Brian C.H. Fong and Lui Tai Lok, this edited volume brings together a team of cutting-edge researchers to examine the operation of the One Country, Two Systems (OCTS) Model in Hong Kong over the past 20 years. The discussion and analysis offered by the contributors will cast light on social and political tensions and conflicts that will continue to unfold in the coming years. This timely account, published on the 20th anniversary of the handover, will be a valuable read for students and scholars of Chinese and East Asian studies

Abstract: This book critically discusses two crises that shape our present: migration crisis and 2007-2008 crisis. The first part raises several questions regarding migration, borders, labour, humanitarianism and biopolitics; the second part focuses on the false dilemma between an interpretation of contemporary crisis in the West as capitalist or humanist. Abstract: This book explores the ways in which democratizing Muslim countries treat their ethnic minorities’ requests of inclusiveness and autonomy. The author examines the results of two important cases-the securitization of Kurds in Turkey and the “autonomization” (a new concept coined by the study) of Acehnese in Indonesia-through multiple hypotheses: the elites’ power interest, the international factors, the institutions and history of the state, and the ontological security of the country. By examining states with ethnic diversity and very little religious diversity, the research controls for the effect of religious conflict on minority inclusion, and so allows expanded generalizations and comparisons. In non-Muslim majority countries, and in so called “mature democracies,” the problem of the inclusion of old or new ethnic minorities is also crucial for the sustainability of the “never-ending” democratization processes. Maurizio Geri is Research Analyst at ACT-NATO, specializing in international security and democratic issues in the regions of Europe, Middle East, and Southeast Asia

Abstract: This volume addresses how black, middle class, second generation Caribbean immigrants are often overlooked in contemporary discussions of race, black economic mobility, and immigrant communities in the US. Based on rich ethnography, Yndia S. Lorick-Wilmot draws attention to this persisting invisibility by exploring this generation’s experiences in challenging structures of oppression as adult children of post-1965 Caribbean immigrants and as an important part of the African-American middle class. She recounts compelling stories from participants regarding their identity performances in public and private spaces-including what it means to be “black and making it in America”-as well as the race, gender, and class constraints they face as part of a larger transnational community.

Abstract: This book examines how socio-political assumptions inform and shape the contestation of sexuality on the African continent. Across Africa, the idea that homosexuality is un-African, un-Christian, un-natural, and un-cultural is now well established. This book analyzes politically- and religiously-inspired protective homophobia within the context of Africa’s socioeconomic and political place in the global community. The author builds upon on-the-ground research and his groundbreaking previous studies on the cultural politics of globalization in Africa to present a wide, complex, and interdisciplinary understanding of Africa’s sexual politics

Abstract: Christianity flourishes in areas facing profound dislocations amidst regime change and warfare. This book explains the appeal of Christianity in the Chaozhou-Shantou (Chaoshan) region during a time of transition, from a stage of disintegration in the late imperial era into the cosmopolitan and entrepreneurial area it is today. The authors argue that Christianity played multiple roles in Chaoshan, facilitating mutual accommodations and adaptations among foreign missionaries and native converts. The trajectory of Christianization should be understood as a process of civilizational change that inspired individuals and communities to construct a sacred order capable of empowerment in times of chaos and confusion.

Abstract: This book provides a critical account of the main controversies involving Norman Geras, one of the key modern political thinkers. It moves from his youthful Trotskyism on to his book on Rosa Luxemburg, then his classic account of Marx and human nature, and his highly regarded discussion of Marx and justice. Following this, Geras tried to elaborate a Marxist theory of justice, which involved taking on-board aspects of liberalism. Next he attacked the post modernism of Laclau and Mouffe and criticised Rorty’s pragmatism, and then elaborated a contract of mutual indifference from a detailed study of the Holocaust. Lastly he wrote a book on human rights and humanitarian intervention, defending the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Cowling varies from exposition and admiration, to ideas about how Geras’s work should be interpreted, to criticism of his Trotskyism and of his support for the invasion of Iraq. The book will appeal to readers interested in Norman Geras and Marxism in particular, and social and political theory in general

Abstract: This book brings together a diversity of perspectives on the psychology of ageing. Exploring theoretical, conceptual, empirical and practical viewpoints on the topic, the authors offer insight into a range of contemporary issues. Dedicated chapters discuss themes within social and critical psychology such as ageing identities, sexuality and empathy in palliative care. The second part of the book analyses cognitive and biological aspects of ageing, including stress and health in ageing, dementia and lifestyle, and resilience in frailty in old age. The authors conclude by offering perspectives on community and political psychology, examining home and community supports for older people. Written in an accessible style suitable for students as well as researchers in psychology and the social sciences interested in ageing, this book showcases key theoretical, empirical, and practical issues in later life

Abstract: This book focuses on the methodology of research on historical memory and contributes to theoretical discussions concerning the use of historical memory as a variable to explain political action and social movement. The chapters of the book conceptualize the relationship between historical memory and national identity formation, perceptions, and policy-making. The author particularly analyses how contested memory and the related social discourse can lead to nationalism and international conflict. Based on theories and research from multiple fields of studies, this book proposes a series of analytic frameworks for the purpose of conceptualizing the functions of historical memory. These analytic frameworks can help categorize, measure, and subsequently demonstrate the effects of historical memory. This book also discusses how to use public opinion polls, textbooks, important texts and documents, monuments and memory sites for conducting research to examine the functions of historical memory. Zheng Wang is the Director of the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies and Professor in the School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University, USA. He is also a Carnegie Fellow at New America and a Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Wang is the author of Never Forget National Humiliation: Historic Memory in Chinese Politics and Foreign Relations, which received the International Studies Association's Yale H. Ferguson Award

The author argues that conceptual innovation is essential if progress on the European project is to be made; new meanings, rather than financial or institutional engineering solutions, will help solve the crisis. By applying a philosophical approach to diagnosing the EU crisis, the book reconsiders the basic concepts of democracy in the context of the complex reality of the EU and the globalised world where profound social and political changes are taking place. It will be of interest to students and scholars interested in EU politics, political theory and philosophy.

Abstract: This book examines the media reform processes and re-democratization projects of Ghana and Nigeria’s emerging democracies. It evaluates and critiques these reform processes, arguing that because of dependency approaches resulting from the transplanting of policy framework from the West into these emerging democracies, the policy goals and objectives of the reforms have not been achieved. Consequently, the inherent socio-cultural, economic and political factors, coupled with the historical antecedents of these countries, have also affected the reform process. Drawing from policy documents, analyses and interviews Ufuoma Akpojivi argues that the lack of citizens’ active participation in policy processes has led to neo-liberalization and the continued universalization of Western ideologies such as democracy, media freedom and independence. Akpojivi posits that the recognition of socio-cultural, political and economic factors inherent to these emerging democracies, coupled with the communal participation of citizens, will facilitate true media reform processes and development of these countries. Ufuoma Akpojivi is Senior Lecturer in the Media Studies Department at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. His research interests cut across media policy, democratization and new media and citizens’ engagement. He is a National Research Foundation (NRF) South Africa rated researcher and a fellow of the African Humanities Program (AHP) of the American Council of Learned Societies

Abstract: This book sheds light on how Hizbullah has transformed religious rituals and supernatural narratives in order to mobilize the Shi’a community. The author examines how Hizbullah has altered its institutional structure and reconstructed Lebanese Shi’a history in a manner similar to that of nationalist movements. Through fieldwork and research, the project finds that Hizbullah has centralized around the concept of Wilayat al-Fagih (Gaurdianship of the Islamic Jurists): in essence, the absolute authority of Iran’s Supreme Leader over the Shi’a “nation.”

Abstract: Most Western-driven theories do not have a place in Black communicative experience, especially in Africa. Many scholars interested in articulating and interrogating Black communication scholarship are therefore at the crossroads of either having to use Western-driven theory to explain a Black communication dynamic, or have to use hypothetical rules to achieve their objectives, since they cannot find compelling Black communication theories to use as reference. Colonization and the African slave trade brought with it assimilationist tendencies that have dealt a serious blow on the cognition of most Blacks on the continent and abroad. As a result, their interpersonal as well as in-group dialogic communication had witnessed dramatic shifts. Black/Africana Communication Theory assembles skilled communicologists who propose uniquely Black-driven theories that stand the test of time. Throughout the volume’s fifteen chapters theories including but not limited to Afrocentricity, Afro-Cultural Mulatto, Venerative Speech Theory, Africana Symbolic Contextualism Theory, HaramBuntu-Government-Diaspora Communications Theory, Consciencist Communication Theory and Racial Democracy Effect Theory are introduced and discussed. Kehbuma Langmia is Professor/Chair and Fulbright Scholar in the Department of Strategic, Legal and Management Communications, Howard University in Washington, DC, USA. He has extensive knowledge and expertise in Public Speaking, Information Communication Technology (ICT), Intercultural Communication and Social Media. He has published eleven books, fourteen book chapters and nine peer-reviewed journal articles nationally and internationally. He is the recipient of the 2017 Toyin Falola Book Award for his most recent book, Globalization and Cyberculture (Palgrave 2016)

Abstract: This handbook provides a comprehensive treatment of the field of criminology at the turn of the 21st century. It is designed to review the important recent developments in the sociology of crime and deviance, including: History of the Discipline: with an emphasis on the 17th, 18th, and 19th century, this section illustrates how historical theories in the discipline affect modern-day research and practice. Methodological Issues in Crime Research: including cutting-edge techniques, written by those who currently use them. This section covers qualitative and quantitative, longitudinal and cross-sectional methods. It also features mapping, trajectories, HLM, latent growth models, NIBRS. Explanations of Crime: including biological/genetic, psychological, social structure, and social process explanations. Theory-Based Practice: with a focus on prevention and cessation of crime, particularly early-childhood development, situational prevention, and disistence techniques. Special Topics: this section includes chapters on crime-related issues such as gangs, guns, peer pressure, drug use, child abuse/domestic violence, school crime, and hate crime, and criminal-justice related issues including capital punishment, restorative justice, community policing, and race and gender in criminal processing. With its interdisciplinary coverage of both historical research and cutting-edge method and theory, this volume will be essential for anyone doing research in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or Sociology

Abstract: This book contributes to the discourse on post-colonial and globalization theories, focusing on Nigeria's transition to a federal system of government. The project analyzes 10 years of civil rule in Nigeria, between 1999 and 2009, and its constitutional arrangements while also engaging in comparative studies of other socio-political developments in Sub-Saharan Africa. The collective influences of the judiciary on the polity was improved and strengthened through globalization. In addition, organized pressure groups, non-governmental organizations, as well as the Civil Society Organization, have played significant roles as vehicles of socio-political change and transformation. They continue to act as buffers for the sustenance of democratic rule, well beyond the period in question

Abstract: This book analyzes Western and Chinese philosophical texts to determine why laughter and the comic have not been a major part of philosophical discourse. Katrin Froese maintains that many philosophical accounts of laughter try to unearth laughter's purpose, thereby rendering it secondary to the intentional and purposive aspects of human nature that impel us to philosophize. Froese also considers texts that take laughter and the comic as starting points, attempting to philosophize out of laughter rather than merely trying to unearth reasons for laughter. The book proposes that continuously unraveling philosophical assumptions through the comic and laughter may be necessary to live well

Abstract: The book presents a thorough study of the changing landscape of state-diaspora relations in Africa, as well as a robust analysis of diaspora engagement policies being pursued across the continent. As the Africa diaspora strengthens its socio-economic and political clout, countries of origin in Africa have sought to engage their citizens living abroad. Over the past decade, the role of diaspora in the homeland development has become a core tenet of national strategies and policies. Against the backdrop of expanding globalization and deepening regional integration, the book presents a thorough study of the changing landscape of state-diaspora relations in Africa, as well as a robust analysis of diaspora engagement policies being pursued across the continent as states seek to extend rights to and extract obligations from their global citizens

Abstract: This book argues that in a globalising world in which nation-states have to manage population flows and intensifying cultural diversity within their borders, multicultural policy and approaches have never been more important. The author takes an extended case study approach, examining Australia’s experiments with pragmatic forms of multiculturalism and multicultural policy since the early 1970s up to the present. The Public Life of Australian Multiculturalism challenges some larger assumptions about multiculturalism - either that it undermines national identity or that it is, and should strive to be, a post-national approach to identity issues. Instead, it argues that framing multiculturalism by inclusive national identity has been the key to multiculturalism’s continuity and general success in Australia. The book also directly challenges the claim that we have entered a post-multicultural world, making a case instead for the continuing relevance of pragmatic approaches to multiculturalism. Students and scholars researching in sociology, politics, migration, multiculturalism, ethnic and racial studies, nationalism, and identity studies will find this study of interest

Abstract: This book is the first in-depth analysis of Ernest William Barnes’ Christian-eugenic philosophy: ‘bio-spiritual determinism’. As a testament to the popularity of the movement, mid-twentieth century British eugenics is contextualized within a remarkably diverse selection of discourses including secular and Anglican interpretations of modernism, poverty, population, gender equality, pacifism and racism. This begins to address the scholastic gap on Christian eugenics while highlighting the perseverance of eugenic racism after World War Two

Abstract: 'Daily, we hear stories of the refugee crisis enveloping the globe. Sometimes we learn about the detail of those refugee lives. Less often do we hear about refugee men and their determination to rebuild personal lives and relationships in new countries. This book provides a rich and moving account that at last helps us understand these men's stories' - Gary W. Dowsett, La Trobe University, Australia 'Using theories of citizenship to examine the everyday intimate lives of men from the horn of Africa, this book provides a rare insight about how they negotiate masculinities and sexualities in forced migration and settlement contexts.' - Jay Marlowe, the University of Auckland, New Zealand This timely book moves beyond struggling, suffering and loss to argue that forced migration often provides opportunities for men to pursue new relationships and re-organise their intimate lives. It focuses on the lived experiences of masculinity, sexuality and pursuit of intimate relationships by men who have arrived in Australia as refugees from the Horn of Africa. The author shows that, even amidst the chaos of displacement, the difficulties of living in limbo whilst seeking asylum and the challenges of settlement, the desire for enjoyable and fulfilling intimate relations remains central to the everyday lives of refugee men. This novel work will appeal to students and scholars of migration studies, citizenship, race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality. Samuel Muchoki is a Course Coordinator at the Melbi Institute, Australia, and a trained anthropologist and public health practitioner. He is also a motivational speaker who presents on topical issues such as migration and refugee experiences, masculinity, gender and sexuality, preventing violence against women and public health

Abstract: This volume provides the key to a deepened discourse on philosophy in Africa. Available literature and academic practice in African philosophy since the 1960s have largely featured discourses in the areas of origin, general meaning and nature of the discipline, with little attention given to specialized areas. By contrast, this book examines a noticeable shifting focus from such general concerns to more specific subject-matter, in such areas as epistemology, moral philosophy, metaphysics, aesthetics, and social and political philosophy in the light of the African experience. The volume includes specific discourses from expert contributors on the nature, history and scope of African ethics and metaphysics, while also discussing particular themes in African epistemology, philosophy of education, existentialism and political philosophy. Researchers seeking for new perspective on African philosophy will find this work thought-provoking, instructive and informative

Abstract: This book focuses on the interconnections of religion and migration in the Black Sea region through case studies that explore shifting identities, community, and national boundaries, as well as social practices and networks. During the past few decades the Black Sea has been transformed from a largely closed region, due to the Cold War, to a bridge for human, economic, and cultural capital flows. As the region opened up, understandings and practices of religion were re-signified due to new and diverse mobilities and resettlements. This volume addresses and responds to the current scarcity of academic research on the repercussion of political reform, migration, and modernization in the areas surrounding the Black Sea. Contributors uncover and examine the pivotal role of religion in current cultural contestations taking place in this strategic region. Engaging with a wide range of case studies, the book offers a fresh, comparative examination of migration as it relates to different countries and religious groups in the region

Abstract: This book focuses on multiculturalism, racism and the interests of nonhuman animals. Each are, in their own right, rapidly growing and controversial fields of enquiry, but how do multiculturalism and racism intersect with the debate concerning animals and their interests? This a deceptively simple question but on that is becoming ever more pressing as we examine our societal practices in a pluralistic world. Collating the work of a diverse group of academics from across the world, the book includes writing on a wide range of subjects and addressing contemporary issues in this critical arena. Subjects covered include multiculturalism, group rights and the limits of tolerance; ethnocentrism and animals; racism and discrimination and non-Western alternatives to animal rights and welfare. The book will be of interest to researchers, lecturers and advanced students as well as range of social justice organisations, government institutions, animal activist organisations and environmental groups
