    Abstract: From Balinese woodcarvings to Batavian silverware, from Indonesian krisses to Chinese porcelain, and from betel boxes to Indo-European paintings: the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag is set to unveil a vast range of objects that bring the enthralling world of the Orient vividly to life. Its new 'Asian Art and Dutch Taste' exhibition uses the private collection of Jan Veenendaal plus some additional items from the Gemeentemuseum's own holdings to illustrate the interaction between East and West over the last four hundred years. The show reveals how the marriage of styles and cultures produced a multitude of unique and extraordinary objects. From the seventeenth century on, a host of Dutch citizens lived in the Far East on a permanent or temporary basis. They all had one thing in common: they went there first and foremost in search of wealth and opportunities that were beyond their grasp in Europe. Countless Dutchmen and foreigners sought their fortunes in Asia in the service of the Dutch East India Company (established in 1602). Their main motivation was trade with and within Asia, but the encounter with previously unknown cultures had an impact not only on Dutch society, but equally on Asian communities.     Abstract: In dieser Studie wird erstmals die Frage untersucht, wie das Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas in Berlin auf die Besucher wirkt. Dafür wird eine quantitative Befragung von 500 Besuchern durchgeführt. Zunächst werden die Erinnerungskulturtheorien von Jan und Aleida Assmann und Horst-Alfred Heinrich vorgestellt. Anschließend wird das Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas örtlich und zeitlich eingebunden, indem das Konzept des repräsentativen öffentlichen Raums eingeführt und die Erinnerung an die Opfer des Holocaust in der Bundesrepublik und der DDR beleuchtet werden. Es folgt die Darstellung der Entstehung des Denkmals. Über die Rezeption von Denkmälern existieren in den Sozialwissenschaften bisher keine Theorien. Daher wird auf die kunstsoziologische Theorie von Pierre Bourdieu, auf eine Studie über die Wirkung von Gedenkstätten von Bert Pampel und auf eine Untersuchung über die emotionale Wirkung von Gemälden von Dorothée Halcour zurückgegriffen. Für die Untersuchung wird angenommen, dass sich die Besucher aufgrund ihres Bildungsgrades, ihrer Nationalität, ihres Alters und ihres Sozialisationsortes in ihren Reaktionen auf das Denkmal unterscheiden. Weiterhin wird angenommen, dass die Umstände des Denkmalbesuchs die Wirkung des Denkmals beeinflussen. Die Befragung zeigt: Personen mit niedrigerem Bildungsgrad konnten sich das Denkmal seltener erschließen als Personen mit höherem Bildungsgrad. Diese Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass Teile der Bevölkerung nicht an der Erinnerung an den Holocaust teilhaben können, wenn die Materialisierung der Erinnerung über Kunst geschieht. Die Nationalität beeinflusste wesentlich, wie die Befragten das Denkmal bewerteten: So beurteilten Deutsche das Denkmal häufiger negativ und seltener positiv als Ausländer. Die Ergebnisse der Befragung werden abschließend im Kontext erinnerungspolitischer Debatten diskutiert.
    Abstract: This study asks how the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin affects its visitors. The study comprises a quantitative survey of 500 visitors. First the study introduces the theories of memory by Jan and Aleida Assmann and Horst-Alfred Heinrich. This is followed by the concept of the so-called representative public space that locates the memorial topographically. This chapter also shows the historical context of the memorial. It describes the development processes of earlier monuments to remember the victims of the Holocaust in the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic between 1945 and 2005. The study then shows the development process of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. There are no theories on the effects of memorials in the social sciences. The study uses Pierre Bourdieu''s theory of art sociology as well as a study on the impact of memorial sites by Bert Pampel and a study on the emotional effects of paintings by Dorothee Halcour as a theoretical frame. The most resultant hypothesises tested by the research state that visitors differ in their reactions to the memorial according to their education, their nationality and their age. Furthermore the study presumes that the circumstances of visiting the memorial affect how people react to the memorial. The results show that visitors with lower levels of education are less often able to develop an understanding of the memorial compared to visitors with a higher education background. The results indicate that these visitors are excluded from the intended remembrance of the Holocaust when the materialization of the memorial is implemented with artistic measures. Nationality plays a significant role too and influences visitors when judging the memorial. Germans more often have negative and less often positive judgements than foreign visitors. Finally the results of the research are discussed in the context of the cultural debate around the significance of memorials.

    Abstract: Haunted Thresholds untersucht die einzigartige Beziehung zwischen Spiritualität und Moderne in Südostasien. Als Ausstellung und Recherchearbeit bringt das Projekt Arbeiten von 15 Künstler/innen in einen experimentellen Dialog mit ausgewählten südostasiatischen Objekten aus der Ethnologischen Sammlung des Instituts für Ethnologie an der Universität Göttingen. Mit ihren eigenen ästhetischen Qualitäten, religiösen Bedeutungen und intellektuellen Reflexivitäten verweisen diese Objekte und Kunstwerke auf existierende immaterielle Kräfte, Geister der Ahnen und jenseitige Mächte im alltäglichen Leben. Haunted Thresholds ist ein Resultat der Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Kunstverein Göttingen und dem Forschungsnetzwerk Dynamiken von Religion in Südostasienʺ (DORISEA). Haunted Thresholds explores the unique relationship between spirituality and modernity in Southeast Asia. As an exhibition and a research process, the project brings works by 15 artists from the region into an experimental dialogue with ethnographic objects from the Ethnographic Collection at the University of Göttingen. With their own aesthetic qualities, religious meanings and intellectual reflexivity, both the objects and artworks reveal immaterial forces, ancestral spirits and otherworldy powers existent in the everyday. Haunted Thresholds is a cooperation between Kunstverein Göttingen and the research network Dynamics of Religion in Southeast Asiaʺ (DORISEA).

    Abstract: 'View From Inside' is an expansive presentation of contemporary Arab video, photography, and mixed media from the Middle East and North Africa. The book shows the works of fifty leading Arab artists from fourteen countries. The works reflect the emergence of photographic, video and digital art as important forms of creative visual expression in the Arab world over the past twenty years. The artworks address a broad range of issues that the artists themselves have defined as important to the modern Arab experience. Four texts cover the early appearance of photography in the Middle East and North Africa in the mid-nineteenth century through photography's evolution as an integral part of the contemporary Arab art world.     Abstract: The volume offers state-of-the art contributions in the intersection of academic profession, research training and institutional governance. They reflect the profound interest of contemporary researchers in the questions of how the contemporary higher education reforms across Europe affect university governance and especially the roles and functions of academics. The volume includes several contributions from the peripheral and developing higher education systems of Central and South-East Europe; hence, attempting to rebalance the European profile of higher education research and at the same time contribute to the most salient debates in the field.     Abstract: This book is written for the growing number of people (teachers, administrators, support staff, parents, and community members) throughout the world who wish to face the challenges of school leadership in ways that feel right, make sense, and contribute to sustaining defensible educational practices. Using and extending the evolving core ideas of the global inviting school movement, it provides a hopeful approach to educational leadership, management, and mentorship that combines philosophical defensibility, administrative savvy, and illustrative stories.     Abstract: Approaches and methods in comparative education are of obvious importance, but do not always receive adequate attention. This second edition of a well-received book, containing thoroughly updated and additional material, contributes new insights within the longstanding traditions of the field. A particular feature is the focus on different units of analysis. Individual chapters compare places, systems, times, cultures, values, policies, curricula and other units.     Abstract: This book makes an original contribution to researching child-community development so that those with specific interests in early childhood education have new theoretical tools to guide their research practices. The book explicitly theorises the use of digital visual tools from a cultural-historical perspective. It also draws upon a range of post-structuralist concepts for moving research and scholarship forward. Examples of visual technologies from research in different cultural communities are foregrounded. In particular this book introduces contemporary methodologies for researching child and community development with a focus on visual methodology so the dynamics of development can be captured over time and analysed historically, culturally, socially, ecologically and psychologically through a range of iterative techniques. Visual technology was not freely available in Vygotsky’s time for example, and therefore potentially represents an extension of his genetic experimental approach to researching child development. The book presents a range of methodological arguments about research into child and community development through which new conceptions for research centred on young children have been created. The authors of the chapters also discuss why a more holistic, dynamic and ethical view of research is needed for generating new knowledge about child development in a range of cultural contexts.
