    Abstract: A study of the modes of predation used by and against the Sanema people of Venezuela. Predation is central to the cosmology and lifeways of the Sanema-speaking Indigenous people of Venezuelan Amazonia, but it also marks their experience of modernity under the socialist "Bolivarian" regime and its immense oil wealth. Yet predation is not simply violence and plunder. For Sanema people, it means a great deal more: enticement, seduction, persuasion. It suggests an imminent threat but also opportunity and even sanctuary. Amy Penfield spent two and a half years in the field, living with and learning from Sanema communities. She discovered that while predation is what we think it is-invading enemies, incursions by gold miners, and unscrupulous state interventions-Sanema are not merely prey. Predation, or appropriation without reciprocity, is essential to their own activities. They use predatory techniques of trickery in hunting and shamanism activities, while at the same time, they employ tactics of manipulation to obtain resources from neighbors and from the state. A richly detailed ethnography, Predatory Economies looks beyond well-worn tropes of activism and resistance to tell a new story of agency from an Indigenous perspective

    Abstract: Religiöse Orte werden erst durch diskursive Strategien als solche konstruiert und wahrgenommen. Auf der Grundlage jüngerer Theorien zu mehrfach gemeinsam genutzten religiösen Orten zeigt sich, dass historisch kontingente Orte mehrdeutige Räume sein können: Am Kloster Sveti Naum überlappen sich interreligiöse Aushandlungen mit Tourismus, Wirtschaft und Politik. Anhand empirisch-qualitativer Daten ihrer einjährigen Feldforschung zeigt Evelyn Reuter Kontinuitäten und Brüche im Wandel dieses Klosters auf und kontextualisiert sie in der regionalen Religionsgeschichte bis zur Gegenwart postsozialistischer Transformationsprozesse

In Part I, Raja Swamy explores post-disaster relocation and livelihood issues in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, India, Anthony Rausch and Junichiro Koji investigate Japan's Hometown Tax Donation Program, and Emma Gilberthorpe argues for development plans that incorporate indigenous people's needs and worldviews. In Part II, Vassily Pigounides empirically analyzes a revenue management system originating in France, Irene Sabaté Muriel looks at the moral economy of mortgage lending and economic reasoning during the housing bubble that rocked Spain when it burst in 2007, and Mathias Krabbe explores debt among US college students. In Part III, Ieva Snikersproge examines a French worker cooperative ice cream venture, Andres Gramajo quantitively measures the strength of capitalist thought among business owners in Latin America, and Michal Stein and John Vertovec explore individual action in the transitional economy in Havana's tourist-oriented dance instruction world. Mit einer umfassenden empirischen Untersuchung politischer Repräsentation in Deutschland zeigt die Autorin, dass die Entscheidungen des Deutschen Bundestages seit den 1980er-Jahren systematisch zugunsten oberer Berufs- und Einkommensgruppen verzerrt sind. In der Folge wird nicht nur das Gleichheitsversprechen der Demokratie verletzt, sondern es werden auch vermehrt Entscheidungen getroffen, die ökonomische Ungleichheit tendenziell verschärfen.

    Abstract: Reparieren und Instandhalten sind ökonomisch wie kulturell zentrale Praktiken im "Leben" technischer Dinge und Infrastrukturen. Der Band rückt diese bislang wenig untersuchten Tätigkeiten in den Vordergrund und fragt nach den Wissensformen der unterschiedlichen Kulturen des Reparierens. Die Expertisen und politischen Ambitionen menschlicher Akteure finden dabei ebenso Berücksichtigung wie die Eigendynamik der Dinge. Die Beiträge untersuchen Praktiken wie die Uhr- oder Computerreparatur sowie Räume wie die Wohnung und das Krankenhaus, das Repair Café und die Stadt des Globalen Südens. Nicht zuletzt geht es um die Frage, inwiefern Reparieren und reparaturfreundliches Design zu mehr Nachhaltigkeit beitragen können.

    Abstract: Reparieren und Instandhalten sind ökonomisch wie kulturell zentrale Praktiken im »Leben« technischer Dinge und Infrastrukturen. Der Band rückt diese bislang wenig untersuchten Tätigkeiten in den Vordergrund und fragt nach den Wissensformen der unterschiedlichen Kulturen des Reparierens. Die Expertisen und politischen Ambitionen menschlicher Akteure finden dabei ebenso Berücksichtigung wie die Eigendynamik der Dinge. Die Beiträge fokussieren auf Praktiken wie die Uhr- oder Computerreparatur sowie Räume wie die Wohnung und das Krankenhaus, das Repaircafé und die Stadt des Globalen Südens. Nicht zuletzt geht es auch um die Frage, inwiefern Reparieren und reparaturfreundliches Design zu mehr Nachhaltigkeit beitragen können.
    Abstract: In the 'life' of technical objects and infrastructures repair and maintenance are central practices, both economically and culturally. This book foregrounds these activities, rarely examined until now, and looks into the forms of knowledge of different cultures of repair. In the process, the expertise and political ambitions of human actors receive as much consideration as the internal dynamics of the objects themselves. The articles focus on practices such as watch or computer repair, as well as on spaces such as the home, the hospital, the Repair Cafe, and the city of the 'Global South'. In addition, the book also investigates the extent to which repair and repair-friendly design can contribute to more sustainability.

    Abstract: In order to develop a different economy and a sustainable relationship with nature and ourselves, we need to abandon our false perceptions of reality.     Abstract: Sein heißt Teilen. Teilen heißt Sein, auf allen Ebenen, vom Atom bis zu unserer Erfahrung von Glück. Lebendigsein folgt der Sehnsucht, ganz Individuum zu werden - und diese erfüllt sich nur in Austausch und Verwandlung. Erst aus Teilhabe entsteht Stimmigkeit, das Gefühl, ein eigenes Selbst, Zentrum der eigenen Erfahrung zu sein. Unser Stoffwechsel, gelingende Beziehungen, Sinnerfahrungen, aber auch der Austausch von Gütern und Leistungen können nur gedeihen, wenn wir sie als gemeinsame Teilhabe an einer schöpferischen Wirklichkeit erschaffen. Diese ist Stoff, und sie ist Fantasie. Atmen heißt Teilen, Körpersein ist Teilen und Lieben bedeutet Teilen. Sein durch Teilen ist die Seele der lebendigen Wirklichkeit. In dieser durchdringen sich Innen und Außen. Sie ist ein leidenschaftlicher Beziehungsprozess, in dem das Begehren nach Identität erst im Leuchten des Anderen eingelöst wird.

    Abstract: This chronology for 2004 to 2013 compiles the chapters on Mozambique previously published in the 'Africa Yearbook. Politics, Economy and Society South of the Sahara'. The country has over the years remained one of the poorest, and poverty is not declining. But the discovery of huge gas fields could bring changes by the mid 2020s. During the period under review, the sheen began to fade from Mozambique's status as a donor darling, as donors increasingly objected to corruption while government was angered by donor impositions and took an increasingly autonomous line. The former liberation movement Frelimo remains the predominant party and has won all national elections, while two presidents have stepped down after two terms. The main opposition party Renamo retains an armed wing launching small military actions. A second opposition party gained control of four cities. A younger and better-educated generation that remembers neither the liberation struggle nor the 1982-92 civil war is beginning to challenge the established leadership

    Description / Table of Contents: "This book is designed to change the way we think about racial inequality. Long after the passage of civil rights laws and now the inauguration of our first black president, blacks and Latinos possess barely a nickel of wealth for every dollar that whites have. Why have we made so little progress? Legal scholar Daria Roithmayr provocatively argues that racial inequality lives on because white advantage functions as a powerful self-reinforcing monopoly, reproducing itself automatically from generation to generation even in the absence of intentional discrimination. Drawing on work in antitrust law and a range of other disciplines, Roithmayr brilliantly compares the dynamics of white advantage to the unfair tactics of giants like AT & T and Microsoft. With penetrating insight, Roithmayr locates the engine of white monopoly in positive feedback loops that connect the dramatic disparity of Jim Crow to modern racial gaps in jobs, housing and education. Wealthy white neighborhoods fund public schools that then turn out wealthy white neighbors. Whites with lucrative jobs informally refer their friends, who refer their friends, and so on. Roithmayr concludes that racial inequality might now be locked in place, unless policymakers immediately take drastic steps to dismantle this oppressive system. Daria Roithmayr is the George T. and Harriet E. Pfleger Professor of Law at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law. An internationally acclaimed legal scholar and activist, she is one of the country's leading voices on the legal analysis of structural racial inequality.     Abstract: »Ökonomie« gilt als ein Kernbereich moderner Gesellschaften, der alle anderen Bereiche maßgeblich durchwirkt. Werden Ökonomie und Kultur zusammengedacht, richtet sich das Interesse gemeinhin auf den Einfluss des ökonomischen Paradigmas auf Gesellschaft und Kultur(wissenschafts-)betrieb. Im Unterschied dazu erfahren jedoch ökonomische Modelle und Theorien in der kulturwissenschaftlichen Forschung noch zu wenig Aufmerksamkeit. Im Gegensatz dazu beschäftigt sich dieser Band mit der Kultur- und Ideengeschichte und der (medialen) Kommunikation des Ökonomischen sowie dessen Material(isierungen). Die Beiträge setzen wichtige Impulse auch für den öffentlich-medialen Umgang mit ökonomischen Themen und tragen damit zu einem Aufbrechen oft unhinterfragter »Gesetzmäßigkeiten« und starrer Bilder in der Verhandlung ökonomischer Fragen bei.

Das Buch ist für den Bereich der politischen Bildung konzipiert, im Rahmen der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (bpb, dort auch online: http://www.bpb.de/sozialkunde verfügbar). Daher werden nicht nur gesellschaftliche Themen und Entwicklungen (z.B. Bevölkerung, Migration, Familie, soziale Ungleichheit), sondern auch politische Themen wie Regierungssystem, Wirtschaftspolitik, Wohlfahrtsstaat, EU behandelt. Die Beiträge sind nicht didaktisch aufbereitet, aber sorgfältig in verständlichem Stil formuliert und z.T. mit Illustrationen versehen. Das Buch stellt eine gute Ergänzung zum periodisch von bpb und Statistischem Bundesamt herausgegebenen Datenreport (kostenlos bestell- und herunterladbar von der Homepage beider Institutionen) dar, der den gleichen Themenbereich anhand von Statistiken darstellt und interpretiert.     Abstract: Through richly detailed anthropological case studies of the rural economics and administrative policies in Burkina Faso, and reassessment of current models of conflict, resource management and modern administration, this book explores the current political, economic and social transformation of Western Africa. Ethnic tensions, the case studies suggest, are a strategic part of social and economic local relations - a pattern that is repeated when ethnic stereotyping finds its way into the higher echelons of national administration and of international development cooperation. Conflicts are shown to be ethnicized by local and administrative elites, creating screens impenetrable to those involved in the states' formal administration, and behind which informal local economies thrive. In these 'concealed economies' individuals exploit the ethnic divide by hiding friendly and profitable inter-ethnic relations behind a rhetoric of ethnic tensions and staged conflict. Cultivating ties across ethnic divides is not limited, however, to rural relations but becomes common practice at almost all levels of national and civil administration.     Abstract: This 2001 book is an attempt by a social scientist to explain the predicament of Gypsies (or Roma), Eastern Europe's largest ethnic minority, and their relationship to the region's states and societies. Barany examines the Gypsies' socioeconomic and political marginality and policies toward them through seven centuries and in seven East European states. He illuminates the reasons why the Roma have consistently occupied the bottom of social, economic, and political hierarchies regardless of historical period or geographic location. Barany argues that the current nostalgia of many Gypsies for the socialist period is easy to understand, given the disastrous effect of the post-communist socioeconomic transformation on the Roma's conditions over the last decade. He explains the impact of Gypsy political mobilization, and the activities of international organizations and NGOs, on government policies. This pioneering multidisciplinary work will engage political scientists, sociologists and historians, as well as students of ethnic and racial studies

    Abstract: Southeast Asia, until the Asian economic crisis of 1997-2000, was a high economic growth area. However, despite the neo-liberal and globalizing logic of capitalism, local conditions and cultures determine that capitalism will spread in ways not entirely consonant with its Western origins. Capitalism is not a free-floating entity -- it is a socially embodied phenomenon that needs to function in various cultural contexts. Consequently, the tension between the universal status that some claim capitalism now occupies in the post-Cold War world and the particularities of the local cultures it enters should be of great concern

    Abstract: Belonging in the two Berlins is an ethnographic investigation into the meaning of German selfhood during the Cold War. Taking the practices of everyday life in the divided Berlin as his point of departure, Borneman shows how ideas of kin, state, and nation were constructed through processes of mirror-imaging and misrecognition. Using linguistics and narrative analysis, he compares the autobiographies of two generations of Berlins residents with the official version of the lifecourse prescribed by the two German states. He examines the relation of the dual political structure to everyday life, the way in which the two states legally regulated the lifecourse in order to define the particular categories of self which signify Germanness, and how citizens experientially appropriated the frameworks provided by these states. Living in the two Berlins constantly compelled residents to define themselves in opposition to their other half. Borneman argues that this resulted in a de facto divided Germany with two distinct nations and peoples. The formation of German subjectivity since World War II is unique in that the distinctive features for belonging - for being at home - to one side exclude the other. Indeed, these divisions inscribed by the Cold War account for many of the problems in forging a new cultural unity

    Abstract: Deborah Gewertz and Frederick Errington have worked as anthropologists in Papua New Guinea for nearly two decades. In this, their second joint study of the Chambri, they consider the way those in a small-scale society, peripheral to the major centres of influence, struggle to sustain some degree of autonomy. They describe the Chambri caught up in world processes of social and cultural change, and attempt to create a 'collective biography' which conveys the intelligibility and significance of the twentieth-century experience of these Papua New Guineans whom they have come to know well. This biography consists of interlocking stories, twisted histories, commentaries and contexts about Chambri who are negotiating their objectives while entangled in systemic change and confronting Western representations of modernization and development

    Abstract: The traditional image of northern Iberian mountain settlements is that they are largely egalitarian, homogeneous, and survivals of archaic forms of 'agrarian collectivism'. In this book, based both on extensive fieldwork and detailed study of local records, Brian Juan O'Neill offers a different perspective, questioning prevailing views on both empirical as well as theoretical and methodological grounds. Through a detailed examination of three major areas of social life - land tenure, cooperative labour exchanges, and marriage and inheritance practices - in one particular hamlet, the author demonstrates the predominance of forms of institutionalized economic inequality and social differentiation within the peasantry. Situating the local study within a wider European and Mediterranean ethnographic and geographical framework, O'Neill offers a refreshing and challenging way of combining the research methods of anthropology with those of social and economic history. His book will appeal to anthropologists, historians, sociologists, geographers and demographers interested in the present and past social structure of European village communities, as well as to those concerned with the growing links between anthropology and history
