    Kurzfassung: Main description: Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft sind zentrale Begriffe der Sozialphilosophie und der politischen Philosophie. Die Untersuchung der Begriffe Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft sowie ihres Verhältnisses zueinander erfolgt in der vorliegenden Arbeit im Rahmen der philosophischen Frage nach Möglichkeit, Konstitution und Kritik des Sozialen. In ihrer Studie wendet sich Nele Schneidereit gegen die tradierte Opposition von Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft. Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft beschreiben zwei zu unterscheidende Aspekte eines in sich vermittelten Zusammenhangs. Diese zunächst negativ-traditionskritische These wird ergänzt durch die positiv-systematische These, dass Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft als Grundbegriffe einer kritischen Sozialphilosophie zu begreifen sind, deren Kern der Begriff einer politischen Gemeinschaft ist. Dabei entfaltet die Autorin ihre Argumentation vor allem entlang der Schriften von Ferdinand Tönnies und Helmuth Plessner.

    Kurzfassung: Der »institutional turn«, also die Renaissance institutionalistischer Ansätze, die sowohl in der Soziologie wie der Ökonomik seit gut einem Vierteljahrhundert (wieder) auf wachsendes Interesse stoßen und manch erstaunliche Einsicht beförderten, haben bislang in der Kommunikationswissenschaft kaum einen Niederschlag gefunden.Dieses Buch ist ein Versuch, das Potenzial institutionalistischer Forschungsansätze für kommunikationswissenschaftliche Fragestellungen zu nutzen. Im Fokus der Analyse, die weitgehend einem von Karl-Siegbert Rehberg angeregten Katalog von Leitfragen einer institutionellen Analyse folgt, stehen Journalismus und journalistische Medien in Demokratien und die Frage, ob diese sich sinnvoll als Institutionen begreifen und analysieren lassen.Die Anwendung institutionalistischer Ansätze aus Soziologie und Ökonomik auf Fragen der Journalistik und der Kommunikationswissenschaft liefert eine Reihe von interessanten Einsichten und Hypothesen zum Zusammenhang von Journalismus, Medien, Öffentlichkeit und Demokratie. Die Ansätze eröffnen neue Analysemöglichkeiten sowohl für die Unterscheidung wie für das Zusammenspiel von Journalismus und Medien, sie verweisen auf Gefährdungen des Journalismus in diesem Zusammenspiel, können aber auch neue Wege und Argumente für dessen Schutz aufzeigen.

    Kurzfassung: Peter Waldmann, seit Jahrzehnten soziologisch und durch viele wissenschaftliche Aufenthalte und private Reisen mit dem "Rätsel Argentinien" befasst, zieht mit diesem Buch Bilanz. Wie erklärt es sich, dass dieses Land, das zwischen 1880 und 1930 einen spektakulären wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Aufschwung nahm und dem noch 1940 von manchen Ökonomen eine große Zukunft vorausgesagt wurde, seit 1950 zu stagnieren begann und sich heute mehr und mehr in einem Niedergang befindet? Waldmann arbeitet die Hintergründe und Ursachen des dekadenten Verfalls des Landes auf und stößt dabei auf strukturelle Faktoren der wirtschaftlichen, politischen und kulturellen Entwicklung von Demokratien, die für uns Europäer von hoher Relevanz sein sollten: Eliteversagen in Politik und Wirtschaft, ein in weiten Teilen der Bevölkerung verbreiteter exzessiver Individualismus, der nicht durch ein starkes Regelsystem wie zum Beispiel in den USA aufgefangen wird, sowie die fehlende Identifizierung mit der Nation als einer gesamtgesellschaftlichen Aufgabe. Der Abstieg Argentiniens, so das Fazit von Peter Waldmann, wird kein Ende nehmen, wenn sich diese Parameter nicht gravierend ändern.Waldmann zeigt, was Länder und ihre Regierungen tun müssen, wenn sie nicht auf die Verliererseite geraten wollen. Gerade in Krisenzeiten sind auf Seiten von Wirtschaft und Politik entscheidende Weichenstellungen nötig. Wir müssen aus den Fehlern Argentiniens lernen!

    Kurzfassung: This book shows that a concept of activity timespace drawn from the work of Martin Heidegger provides new insights into the nature of activity, society, and history. Although the book is a work of theory, it has significant implications for the determination and course, not just of activity, but of sociohistorical change as well. Drawing on empirical examples, the book argues (1) that timespace is a key component of the overall space and time of social life, (2) that interwoven timespaces form an essential infrastructure of important social phenomena such as power, coordinated actions, social organizations, and social systems, and (3) that history encompasses constellations of indeterminate temporalspatial events. The latter conception of history in turn yields a propitious account of how the past exists in the present. In addition, because the concept of activity timespace highlights the teleological character of human action, the book contains an extensive defense of the teleological character of such allegedly ateleological forms of activity as emotional and ceremonial actions. Since, finally, the book's ideas about timespace and activity as an indeterminate event derive from an interpretation of Heidegger, the work furthers understanding of the relevance of his thought for social and historical theory. This book develops an original Heideggerian account of the timespace and indeterminacy of human activity while describing insights that this account provides into the nature of activity, society and history. Drawing on empirical examples, the book argues that activity timespace is a key component of social space and time, shows that interwoven timespaces form an essential infrastructure of social phenomena, offers a novel account of the existence of the past in the present, and defends the teleological character of emotional and ceremonial actions

    Kurzfassung: Nichts wird von der intellektuellen Klasse schärfer kritisiert und tiefer verachtet als der alles und jeden durchdringende Konsum. Dabei stellt der massenhafte Konsum einen unverzichtbaren Bestandteil jeder auf Wohlstand abzielenden Wirtschaftsordnung dar. Dennoch einigt die Ablehnung einer »materialistischen Einstellung« Rechte wie Linke, Avantgardisten wie Bildungsbürger, Verfechter einer Elite wie Vertreter der Mittelschicht.Thomas Hecken zeichnet in seinem Essay die Geschichte dieser Versagung von Böll bis Habermas, von der KPD bis zur CDU und von der FAZ bis zur »konkret« nach. Er entlarvt die zwiespältigen Versuche der Pop-Linken und der Neoliberalen, daran etwas zu ändern - und unternimmt schließlich selbst eine Verteidigung von Konsum und Materialismus.

    Anmerkung: As cities have gentrified, educated urbanites have come to prize what they regard as "authentic" urban life: aging buildings, art galleries, small boutiques, upscale food markets, neighborhood old-timers, funky ethnic restaurants, and old, family-owned shops. These signify a place's authenticity, in contrast to the bland standardization of the suburbs and exurbs. But as Sharon Zukin shows in Naked City, the rapid and pervasive demand for authenticity--evident in escalating real estate prices, expensive stores, and closely monitored urban streetscapes--has helped drive out the very people who first lent a neighborhood its authentic aura: immigrants, the working class, and artists. Zukin traces this economic and social evolution in six archetypal New York areas--Williamsburg, Harlem, the East Village, Union Square, Red Hook, and the city's community gardens--and travels to both the city's first IKEA store and the World Trade Center site. She shows that for followers of Jane Jacobs, this transformation is a perversion of what was supposed to happen.     Kurzfassung: Kein Soziotop hat sich seit dem Mauerfall so radikal verändert wie der Berliner Stadtteil Prenzlauer Berg. Früher ein Hort der DDR-Avantgarde, haben seit 1989 viele Studierende und später Yuppies, Bobos und Lohas den Charme des Viertels für sich entdeckt - ein Verdrängungsprozess, der nicht ohne Konflikte verlief.Thomas Dörfler erforscht den sozialräumlichen Wandel des Ostberliner Innenstadtbezirks seit den späten 1980er Jahren und richtet seine Perspektive auf die alltagsweltlichen Raumpraktiken früherer und heutiger Bewohner_innen. Er zeigt, dass dieser Wandel mit dem klassischen Raumverständnis der Stadtforschung nicht adäquat analysiert werden kann, und stellt das Konzept des relationalen Milieuraums vor. Ein innovativer Beitrag zur Gentrification-Forschung, der raum- und milieutheoretische Perspektiven miteinander verknüpft.

In turn, changes in that environment have favoured the rise of certain social groups and limited the actions of others. Despite this, environmental history has remained a 'blind spot' for most social and economic historians.     Kurzfassung: In the early nineteenth century, German intellectuals such as Novalis, Schelling, and Friedrich Schlegel, convinced that Germany's cultural origins lay in ancient India, attempted to reconcile these origins with their imagined destiny as saviors of a degenerate Europe, then shifted from 'Indomania' to Indophobia when the attempt foundered. The philosophers Hegel, Schopenhauer, and, later, Nietzsche provided alternate views of the role of India in world history that would be disastrously misappropriated in the twentieth century. Reconstructing Hellenistic and humanist views of the ancient Brahmins and Goths, French-Enlightenment debates over the postdiluvian origins of the arts and sciences, and the Indophilia and protonationalism of Herder, Robert Cowan focuses on turning points in the development of an 'Indo-German' ideal, an ideal less focused on intellectual imperialism than many studies of the 'Aryan Myth' and Orientalism would have us believe. Cowan argues that the study of this ideal continues to offer lessons about cultural difference in the 'post-national' twenty-first century. Of great interest to historians, philosophers, and literary scholars, this cross-cultural study offers a new understanding of the Indo-German story by showing that attempts to establish identity necessarily involve a reconciliation of origins and destinies, of self and other, of individual and collective.     Kurzfassung: This study of more than two thousand years of African social history weaves together evidence from historical linguistics, archaeology, comparative ethnography, oral tradition, and art history to challenge the assumptions that all African societies were patriarchal and that the status of women in precolonial Africa is beyond the scope of historical research. In East-Central Africa, women played key roles in technological and economic developments during the long precolonial period. Female political leaders were as common as male rulers, and women, especially mothers, were central to religious ceremonies and beliefs.     Kurzfassung: Drawing on archaeological, historical, theological, scientific and folkloric sources, Sarah Tarlow's interdisciplinary study examines belief as it relates to the dead body in early modern Britain and Ireland. From the theological discussion of bodily resurrection to the folkloric use of body parts as remedies, and from the judicial punishment of the corpse to the ceremonial interment of the social elite, this book discusses how seemingly incompatible beliefs about the dead body existed in parallel through this tumultuous period. This study, which is the first to incorporate archaeological evidence of early modern death and burial from across Britain and Ireland, addresses new questions about the materiality of death: what the dead body means, and how its physical substance could be attributed with sentience and even agency. It provides a sophisticated original interpretive framework for the growing quantities of archaeological and historical evidence about mortuary beliefs and practices in early modernity

    Kurzfassung: Challenging received views of music in nineteenth-century German thought, culture and society, this 2010 book provides a radical reappraisal of its socio-political meanings and functions. Garratt argues that far from governing the nineteenth-century musical discourse and practice, the concept of artistic autonomy and the aesthetic categories bequeathed by Weimar classicism were persistently challenged by alternative models of music's social role. The book investigates these competing models and the social projects that gave rise to them. It interrogates nineteenth-century musical discourse, discussing a wide range of manifestos championing musical democratization or seeking to make music an engine for the transformation of society. In addition, it explores institutions and movements that attempted to realize these goals, and compositions - by Mendelssohn, Lortzing and Liszt as well as Wagner - in which the relation between aesthetic and social claims is programmatic
