    Abstract: Over the last few decades, the politics of gender and sexuality have turned extremely hostile across Europe. Long fought for rights and antidiscriminatory politics have come under heavy attack, while Gender Studies programs have been banned. In tandem, feminist arguments are being instrumentalized by right-wing movements so as to cement nationalist projects and racist positions. This turmoil regarding the politics of gender in Europe has become even more complex as gender, sexuality, and race find themselves used as markers of both progress and backwardness within the postcolonial, postsocialist European landscape reproducing old and creating new hierarchies within the societies and between them. Based on the 2021 conference “Troubling Gender: New Turbulences in the Politics of Gender in Europe,” organized by the Commission on Gender Research and Queer Anthropology of the German Association for European Ethnology and Empirical Cultural Analyses, this issue of Berliner Blätter hence assembles an array of analytical papers as well as polyvocal written discussions seeking to make sense of these developments as well as of their local and regional articulations and effects. The issue brings together queer/feminist voices and analyses from the Eastern and Western European contexts; furthermore, it examines the possibilities for solidarity across different positionalities and engages with diverse histories of struggle. The issue presents analyses informed by gender and queer theory, as mostly based on ethnographic research, and thus ultimately allows us to better understand the current conjuncture of the politics of gender and sexuality in and of Europe. With this, it partakes in the ongoing feminist and queer struggles to build a better future for all those concerned.
    Abstract: Im letzten Jahrzehnt haben sich Politiken rund um Geschlechter und Sexualitätspolitik in ganz Europa äußerst feindselig entwickelt. Erkämpfte Rechte und eine antidiskriminatorische Politik sind massiv unter Beschuss geraten, Studiengänge der Geschlechterforschung wurden verboten. Gleichzeitig werden feministische Argumente von rechtsgerichteten Bewegungen instrumentalisiert, um nationalistische Projekte und rassistische Positionen zu zementieren. Noch weiter kompliziert wird die Situation dadurch, dass Geschlecht, Sexualität und Rasse in der postkolonialen, postsozialistischen europäischen Landschaft als Marker für Fortschritt und Rückständigkeit dienen, wodurch alte Hierarchien innerhalb der Gesellschaften und zwischen ihnen reproduziert und neue geschaffen werden. Ausgehend von der Konferenz „Troubling Gender: Neue Turbulenzen in der Geschlechterpolitik in Europa“, organisiert 2021 von der Kommission für Geschlechterforschung und Queere Anthropologie in der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Europäische Ethnologie und Empirische Kulturwissenschaft (DGEKW), bringt die Ausgabe der Berliner Blätter queere und feministische Stimmen und Analysen aus dem ost- und westeuropäischen Kontext zusammen. Gemeinsam versuchen sie, diese Entwicklungen, ihre lokalen und regionalen Artikulationen und Auswirkungen zu verstehen. Neben den geschlechter- und queertheoretisch fundierten Analysen, die sich größtenteils auf ethnografische Forschungen stützen, ergründen polyvokale, dialogisch geschriebene Beiträge die Möglichkeiten der Solidarität über verschiedene Positionen hinweg und zeigen die verschiedenen Geschichten von gender- und queerpolitischen Kämpfen und Epistemologien in Europa. Die Ausgabe ermöglicht so ein differenziertes Verständnis der aktuellen Situation der Geschlechter- und Sexualitätspolitik in und für Europa und hat damit teil an den laufenden feministischen und queeren Kämpfen um eine bessere Zukunft für alle Beteiligten.

    Abstract: Watchfulness shapes many Chicanxs` and other People of Color`s everyday lives in San Diego. Experiencing racist discrimination can lead to becoming vigilant, which frames their subjectivity. Focusing particularly on Chicanxs, we show how they seek to intervene against structural inequalities and threats in their lives, such as by re-claiming space, consciousness raising, participating in protests, and healing practices. We argue that contestations surrounding belonging create particularly watchful selves and that this is a significant aspect of borderland lifeworlds more broadly.The book advances the Anthropology of borders, coloniality, subjectivity, and race, as well as contributing to Chicano and Latino Studies, and Urban Studies. Pushing the boundaries of conventional approaches, this book is methodologically innovative by including team fieldwork, digital ethnography, and illustrative work by a local artist. It fills a gap in Security Studies by examining peer-to-peer vigilance beyond top-down surveillance and bottom-up "sousveillance," and expanding previous understandings of watchfulness as an ambivalent practice that can also express care and contribute to community building, as well as representing a "way of life."     Abstract: Examines the paradoxes of kinship in the lives of unauthorized African migrants as they struggle for mobility, employment, and citizenship in Europe.In a rapidly changing and highly precarious context, unauthorized African migrants turn to kinship in search of security, stability, and predictability. Through the exchange of identity documents between "siblings," assistance in obtaining such documentation through kinship networks, and marriages that provide access to citizenship, new assemblages of kinship are continually made and remade to navigate the shifting demands of European states. These new kinship relations, however, often prove unreliable, taking on new, unexpected dynamics in the face of codependency; they become more difficult to control than those who entered into such relations could have imagined. Through unusually close ethnographic work in West African migrant communities in Amsterdam, Apostolos Andrikopoulos reveals unseen dynamics of kinship through shared papers, the tensions of race and gender that develop in mutually beneficial marriages, and the vast, informal networks of people, information, and documentation on which migrants rely. Throughout Argonauts of West Africa, Andrikopoulos demonstrates how inequality, exclusionary practices, and the changing policies of an often-violent state demand innovative ways of doing kinship to successfully navigate complex migration routes.

    Abstract: In der hier vorliegenden Promotionsschrift wird ein von der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie inspirierter ethnographischer Forschungsansatz angewandt, um, ausgehend von dem Setting des Studiokurses an einer spanischen Architekturschule, aufzuzeigen, wie Architekt:innen die disziplinären Logiken der Architekturausbildung und in weiterer Instanz die Schnittstelle zwischen Ausbildung und professioneller Praxis problematisieren und aus der Disziplin selbst heraus neu verhandeln. Hierbei wird beschrieben, (1) wie die Einheit von Architekturausbildung und der Bauwelt/Baupraxis aufgebrochen wird, (2) wie der Begriff des Grundproblems in der architektonischen Gestaltung selbst problematisiert wird und, (3) wie in der architektonischen Produktion, (lokale) sozio-politische Themen, die agency von nicht-menschlichen Akteur:innen und die ethische Verantwortlichkeit von Architekt:innen für die gebaute Umwelt, neue Relevanz gewinnen. Basierend auf einer ethnographischen Feldforschung (zwischen 2017-2019), wird in dieser Dissertation eine neue Konzeptualisierung von Architektur vorgestellt: die ‚Architektur als theoretische Praxis‘. Diese eröffnet neben der ‚Architektur als Form‘ und der ‚Architektur als Entwurfspraxis‘ eine weitere Betrachtungsebene von Architektur, welche es ermöglicht die architektonische Produktion jenseits des Entwurfs von Gebäuden und Bauelementen zu untersuchen und aufzuzeigen, wie Architekt:innen in Gestaltungsprozessen Konzepte und Diskurse selbst bauen und so als Teil ihrer sozio-materiellen Praktiken umsetzen. Dadurch werden Parallelen zwischen der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie und der ‚Architektur als theoretische Praxis‘ diskutiert und aufgezeigt, wie beide als (unterschiedliche) Formen einer „Anti-Theorie“ definiert werden können.
    Abstract: This dissertation explores from an actor-network theory inspired ethnographic research approach how architects do, challenge and problematize the disciplinary logics of architectural education and, in a further instance, the intersection between architectural training and the professional practice. Taking the studio courses at a Spanish architecture school as starting point, this ethnographic case study describes (1) how the unity of architectural education and building practices is suspended, (2) how the concept of the fundamental problem in architecture is problematized by architectural design practices, and (3) how (local) socio-political issues, the agency of non-humans and the ethical accountability of architects for the built environment gain new relevance in architectural production. Based in ethnography research (between 2017-2019), this dissertation presents a new conceptualization of architecture: the ‘architecture as theoretical practice’. In comparison to an ‘architecture as form’ and an ‘architecture as design practice’, this new conceptualization opens up the possibility to examine architectural production beyond the design and construction of buildings and reveals how architects build or materialize concepts and discourse as part of their socio-material practices. Consequently, parallels between actor-network theory and 'architecture as theoretical practice' are discussed by showing how both of them can be defined as (different) forms of ‘anti-theory’.

    Abstract: Der Kampf gegen die Emanzipation von Frauen und sexuellen Minderheiten ist fester Bestandteil extrem rechter Weltanschauungen. Die Vorstellung, der "westliche" Mann werde unterdrückt und müsse sich gegen eine "Verweiblichung" zur Wehr setzen, eint große Teile des rechten Milieus. Tobias Ginsburg hat sich undercover in diese Welt überhöhter Männlichkeit begeben und traf auf selbsternannte Männerrechtler, Burschenschaftler, Nazi-Rapper, US-amerikanische "Proud Boys" und in Polen auf ein einflussreiches Institut rechts-religiöser Fundamentalisten, deren Netzwerk von den USA bis nach Russland reicht. Mit seiner Recherche gibt er einen Einblick in die verschiedenen Verflechtungen antifeministischer und rechter Ideologien und beschreibt einzelne Radikalisierungsbiografien. Mit seinen Beobachtungen macht er auch auf Strategien der Rekrutierung und Vernetzung sowie das in der Szene vorhandene Gewaltpotenzial aufmerksam.

The author, a scion of the erstwhile ruling family of Kanker, delves into the oral accounts given in the ancestral deity practices of the mixed tribe-caste communities of the region to highlight popular narratives of its historical polity. As he struggles with his own dilemmas as ethnographer-king, what comes into view is a polity where the princely state is drawn out amidst a terrain of gods and spirits as much as that of law courts and magistrates, and political power is divided, contested and shared between the raja/state and the people. This study constitutes not only an intervention in the larger debate on the relationship between state formations and tribal peoples, but also on the very nature of history as a knowledge practice, especially the understandings of power, authority and sovereignty in it. Combining intensive ethnography, complementary archival work and crucial theoretical questions engaging social scientists worldwide, the author charts an unusual explanatory path that can allow us to meaningfully understand societies/peoples that have historically been marginalized and seen as different.     Abstract: This critical text is a timely ethnography of how global powers, local resistance, and capital flows are shaping contemporary African foodways. Ghana was one of the first countries targeted by a group of US donors and agribusiness corporations that funded an ambitious plan to develop genetically modified (GM) crops for African farmers. The collective believed that GM crops would help farmers increase their yields and help spark a "new" Green Revolution on the continent. Soon after the project began in Ghana, a nationwide food sovereignty movement emerged in opposition to GM crops. Today, in spite of impressive efforts and investments by proponents, only two GM crops remain in the pipeline. Why, after years of preparation, millions of dollars of funding, and multiple policy reforms, did these megaprojects effectively come to a halt? One of the first ethnographies to take on the question of GM crops in the African context, We Are Not Starving: The Struggle for Food Sovereignty in Ghana blends archival analysis, interviews, and participant observation with Ghanaian scientists, farmers, activists, and officials. Ultimately the text aims to illuminate why GM crops have animated the country and to highlight how their introduction has opened an opportunity to air grievances about the systematic de-valuing and exploitation of African land, labor, and knowledge that have been centuries in the making.     Abstract: Bringing together ethnographic case studies of industrial labor from different parts of the world, "Industrial Labor on the Margins of Capitalism" explores the increasing casualization of workforces and the weakening power of organized labor. This division owes much to state policies and is reflected in local understandings of class. By exploring this relationship, these essays question the claim that neoliberal ideology has become the new `commonsense` of our times and suggest various propositions about the conditions that create employment regimes based on flexible labor.

    Abstract: This is a study of how Donald J. Trump, his populist credentials notwithstanding, borrows without acknowledgment and stubbornly refuses to come to terms with his indebtedness. Taken together with mobility and conviviality, the principle of incompleteness enables us to distinguish between inclusionary and exclusionary forms of populism, and when it is fuelled by ambitions of superiority and zero-sum games of conquest.Nyamnjoh challenges the reader to reflect on how stifling frameworks of citizenship and belonging predicated upon hierarchies of humanity and mobility, and driven by a burning but elusive quest for completeness, can be constructively transcended by humility and conviviality inspired by taking incompleteness seriously. Nyamnjoh argues that the logic and practice of incompleteness is a healthy antidote to name-calling and scapegoating others as undesirable outsiders, depending on the brand of populism at play.Recognising incompleteness also helps to question sterile and problematic binaries such as those between elites and the impoverished masses among whom populists go to fish for political visibility, prominence and success.

Vielmehr griffen Berater:innen und Intellektuelle wie Foucault, Crozier oder Luhmann auf die Kybernetik zurück, um die Ideenwelt der Souveränität abzulösen und unser Regierungsdenken grundlegend zu verändern. Eine Analyse spätmoderner Gesellschaften kommt ohne eine Analyse dieses Netzwerk-Paradigmas nicht aus.

    Abstract: Following the recent global housing boom, tract housing development became a billion-dollar industry in Mexico. At the national level, neoliberal housing policy has overtaken debates around land reform. For Indigenous peoples, access to affordable housing remains crucial to alleviating poverty. But as palapas, traditional thatch and wood houses, are replaced by tract houses in the Yucatán Peninsula, Indigenous peoples' relationship to land, urbanism, and finance is similarly transformed, revealing a legacy of debt and dispossession.Indigenous Dispossession examines how Maya families grapple with the ramifications of neoliberal housing policies. M. Bianet Castellanos relates Maya migrants' experiences with housing and mortgage finance in Cancún, one of Mexico's fastest-growing cities. Their struggle to own homes reveals colonial and settler colonial structures that underpin the city's economy, built environment, and racial order. But even as Maya people contend with predatory lending practices and foreclosure, they cultivate strategies of resistance from "waiting out" the state, to demanding Indigenous rights in urban centers. As Castellanos argues, it is through these maneuvers that Maya migrants forge a new vision of Indigenous urbanism.
