    Abstract: Die eigene Zeit als Kolonialmacht sei im Vergleich mit Ländern wie Frankreich oder Großbritannien kurz und relativ unproblematisch gewesen: So sah man es hierzulande lange. Doch das war ein Irrtum. Heute steht die deutsche koloniale Vergangenheit zu Recht im Zentrum kontrovers geführter Debatten über das koloniale Erbe in einer globalen Welt. Dieses Buch beleuchtet mit dem Auswärtigen Amt einen zentralen Akteur des deutschen Kolonialismus und spannt den Bogen vom Deutschen Kaiserreich bis weit ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein. Dabei richtet sich der Blick nicht nur auf Deutschland, sondern auch in die betroffenen Gesellschaften Afrikas, Asiens und Ozeaniens. Mit dem Versailler Vertrag von 1919 endete die formale deutsche Kolonialherrschaft. Doch koloniales Denken lebte in der Mitte der deutschen Ge sellschaft fort - so auch im Auswärtigen Amt, dem eine Mitverantwortung für Gewalt und Verbrechen in den deutschen Kolonien zukommt. Die Folgen seines Handelns sind noch bis in unsere Gegenwart spürbar. In der Zeit der NS-Diktatur verbanden sich nationalkonservative, monarchistische und antirepublikanische Haltungen im Auswärtigen Amt mit den expansionistischen und rassistischen Zielen des Nationalsozialismus. Ab 1949 prägten Indifferenz und Ignoranz, Passivität und Relativierung die bundesdeutsche Politik gegenüber den ehemaligen Kolonien im globalen Süden. Heute ist das Amt maßgeblich an Verhandlungen über Restitution und Wiedergutmachung beteiligt. Zudem wird es von einer diverser gewordenen deutschen Gesellschaft mit Fragen zur kolonialen Vergangenheit konfrontiert. Aus Gründen der historischen Gerechtigkeit, aber auch angesichts einer veränderten Weltlage muss sich das Amt seiner eigenen Kolonialgeschichte stellen

    Abstract: Städtische Verwaltungen und Regierungen sind zunehmend besessen vom "Image" ihrer Stadt und stürzen sich in einen Vermarktungswettbewerb, der auf Tourismus, Investoren und Immobilienmärkte ausgerichtet ist. Die Menschen, die in der Stadt leben, werden dabei zum Ziel architektonischer Verdrängungsmaßnahmen. Mickaël Labbé zeigt, wie ganze Bevölkerungsteile durch eine kaum wahrnehmbare Architektur der Verachtung als unerwünscht ausgeschlossen werden. Überwachungskameras, Bänke mit geneigter Sitzfläche oder trennenden Armlehnen, auf denen man nicht schlafen kann, und andere subtile Maßnahmen erschweren insbesondere sozial marginalisierten Menschen wie Obdachlosen das Leben in der Stadt.Gegen diese Tendenz führt Labbé die Notwendigkeit ins Feld, eine Stadt neu zu erfinden, die sich an uns alle richtet. Anstelle von ausschließenden Mechanismen braucht es Räume, in denen wir unsere Verbindungen wieder enger knüpfen können. Denn eine Stadt, die nicht mehr auf ihre gemeinschaftliche Nutzung ausgerichtet ist, die nur aus homogenen Ghettos besteht, wo wir einander nicht mehr konfrontativ und in aller Unterschiedlichkeit begegnen können, ist ein Verlust für uns alle.Labbé beschreibt funktionierende Beispiele einer "Architektur der Anerkennung" und plädiert für eine Wiederaneignung des öffentlichen Raums

    Abstract: Über kaum ein anderes Land wird in Deutschland so viel geredet und gestritten: Zu Israel hat jeder eine Meinung. Warum ist das so? Wieso hat der Nahostkonflikt eine solche Bedeutung? Und warum ist die Debatte so emotional – und oft so vergiftet? Als Meron Mendel vor zwanzig Jahren nach Deutschland kam, stellte er überrascht fest, welche Bedeutung sein Heimatland Israel hier im öffentlichen Diskurs hatte. Schon damals konnten nahezu alle, mit denen er sprach, klare Positionen zu Israel und seiner Politik formulieren. Heute werden die Debatten noch heftiger geführt. Zuletzt haben sich Skandale aneinandergereiht – vom öffentlichen Streit um den antiisraelischen Philosophen Achille Mbembe im Jahr 2020 bis zur Documenta-Debatte von 2022. Einerseits wird eine Art „Freundschaftspflicht“ aufgrund der NS-Vergangenheit und dem andauernden Antisemitismus in Deutschland proklamiert. Andererseits stellt sich die Frage, wie Deutschland auf den sich verschärfenden Rechtskurs der Regierung in Jerusalem reagieren soll. Meron Mendel schildert in diesem Buch, wie das Verhältnis zu Israel und zum Nahostkonflikt in Deutschland verhandelt wird, in der Politik und in den Medien, unter Linken, unter Migranten und unter Juden.

    Abstract: Der belgische Schriftsteller und Historiker Reybrouck ist durch ein monumentales Werk über die Geschichte Kongos (siehe "Kongo", ID-A 24/12) schon einem gröe︣ren Publikum bekannt geworden. Die in diesem Buch beschriebene Revolusi (Revolution) bezeichnet die Periode, während der die Indonesier nach der Besetzung durch Japan einen Guerilla-Krieg gegen die zurückkehrenden niederländischen Kolonialherren führten und schliesslich im Dezember 1949 die internationale Anerkennung der im August 1945 proklamierten nationalen Unabhängigkeit erreichten. Für Reybrouck waren diese Ereignisse, die ausserhalb Indonesiens bis heute kaum beachtet werden, weltgeschichtlich bedeutsam. Er schildert die ungemein komplexen diplomatischen, militärischen und innenpolitischen Entwicklungen lebhaft und auch für den Laien gut nachvollziehbar. Dabei bezieht er sich auf fast 200 ausführliche Interviews mit, überwiegend indonesischen, Zeitzeugen. In der fesselnden Darstellung spannt Reybrouck den Bogen von den Anfängen der indonesischen Geschichte bis in die 1950er-Jahre und vermag es, auch den Blick Betroffener einzubeziehen.     Abstract: The boni, the wealthy, but largely non-political, section of the Roman elite, have hitherto escaped scholarly attention. This book draws a detailed and rounded picture of the boni, their identity, values and interests, also tracing their - often tense - relationship to the political class, whose inner circle of noble families eventually lost their trust and support. Concerns about property played a central part in this process, and the book explores key Roman concepts associated with property, including frugality, luxury, patrimony, debt and the all-important otium that ensured the peaceful enjoyment of private possessions. Through close readings of Cicero and other republican writers, a new narrative of the 'fall of the republic' emerges. The shifting allegiances of the wider elite of boni viri played an important part in the events that brought an end to the republic and ushered in a new political system better attuned to their material interests

Taken together with mobility and conviviality, the principle of incompleteness enables us to distinguish between inclusionary and exclusionary forms of populism, and when it is fuelled by ambitions of superiority and zero-sum games of conquest.Nyamnjoh challenges the reader to reflect on how stifling frameworks of citizenship and belonging predicated upon hierarchies of humanity and mobility, and driven by a burning but elusive quest for completeness, can be constructively transcended by humility and conviviality inspired by taking incompleteness seriously. Nyamnjoh argues that the logic and practice of incompleteness is a healthy antidote to name-calling and scapegoating others as undesirable outsiders, depending on the brand of populism at play.Recognising incompleteness also helps to question sterile and problematic binaries such as those between elites and the impoverished masses among whom populists go to fish for political visibility, prominence and success.

    Abstract: "In 1639, while the Géluk School of the Fifth Dalai Lama and Qing emperors vied for supreme authority in Inner Asia, Zanabazar (1635-1723), a young descendent of Chinggis Khaan, was proclaimed the new Jebtsundampa ruler of the Khalkha Mongols. Over the next three centuries, the ger (yurt) erected to commemorate this event would become the mobile monastery Ikh Khüree, the political seat of the Jebtsundampas and a major center of Mongolian Buddhism. When the monastery and its surrounding structures were destroyed in the 1930s, they were rebuilt and renamed Ulaanbaatar, the modern-day capital of Mongolia. Based on little-known works of Mongolian Buddhist art and architecture, A Monastery on the Move presents the intricate and colorful history of Ikh Khüree and of Zanabazar, himself an eminent artist. Author Uranchimeg Tsultemin makes the case for a multifaceted understanding of Mongol agency during the Géluk's political ascendancy and the Qing appropriation of the Mongol concept of dual rulership (shashin tör) as the nominal "Buddhist Government." In rich conversation with heretofore unpublished textual, archaeological, and archival sources (including ritualized oral histories), Uranchimeg argues that the Qing emperors' "Buddhist Government" was distinctly different from the Mongol vision of sovereignty, which held Zanabazar and his succeeding Jebtsundampa reincarnates to be Mongolia's rightful rulers. Er zeigt, dass unsere Welt keineswegs nur durch den Neoliberalismus geprägt wird – und dass die Netzwerk-Gesellschaft nicht einfach ein Resultat des Internets oder von Computern ist. Vielmehr griffen Berater:innen und Intellektuelle wie Foucault, Crozier oder Luhmann auf die Kybernetik zurück, um die Ideenwelt der Souveränität abzulösen und unser Regierungsdenken grundlegend zu verändern. Eine Analyse spätmoderner Gesellschaften kommt ohne eine Analyse dieses Netzwerk-Paradigmas nicht aus.

    Abstract: Seit 1955 erheben die Macherinnen und Macher der documenta den Anspruch, Einblick in die aktuellen künstlerischen Tendenzen zu liefern und den aktuellen Zeitgeist zu dokumentieren. Die Publikation stellt die Geschichte der documenta in den Kontext der politischen, kultur- und gesellschaftsgeschichtlichen Entwicklung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts und setzt so Kunst und Geschichte in ein sich wechselseitig bedingendes Verhältnis. Immer wieder war die internationale Großausstellung ein Ort, an dem das westdeutsche Selbstverständnis verhandelt wurde. Progressive und regressive politische Tendenzen standen dabei von Anfang an nebeneinander. „Die einzelnen Essays wechseln sich mit Bildstrecken der Exponate und knappen Kommentaren ab. So ist trotz aller hier geäußerter inhaltlicher Kritik eine handliche und ansprechende Dokumentation zur Geschichte der documenta zwischen 1955 und 1997 entstanden, die den aktuellen Wissenstand präsentiert. At the same time, the contributions highlight the nature of contemporary social life, including virtual communication, the nature of communities, neoliberalism and contemporary political economies, and the shifting nature of nation states and the role of government. Over half of the world`s population has been affected by restrictions of movement, with physical distancing requirements and self-isolation recommendations impacting profoundly on everyday life but also on the economy, resulting also, in turn, with dramatic shifts in the economy and in mass unemployment.By reflecting on how the pandemic has interrupted daily lives, state infrastructures and healthcare systems, the contributing authors in this volume mobilise anthropological theories and concepts to locate the pandemic in a highly connected and exceedingly unequal world. Revealing the crucial role of laughter in responding to the failure of the peace process and ongoing occupation, she unearths the potential of humour to facilitate understanding and empathy in a time of division. This is the first book to provide a combined overview of Palestinian art and film, showing the ways in which both art forms have developed in response to critical moments in Palestinian history over the last century. These key moments, Lionis argues, have radically transformed contemporary Palestinian collective identity and in turn Palestinian cultural output.Mapping these critical junctions - beginning with the Balfour Declaration of 1917 to the Oslo Accords in 1993 - she explores the historical trajectory of Palestinian art and film, and explains how to the failure of the peace process has led to the present proliferation of humour in Palestinian visual culture.

    Abstract: The assertion that even institutions often viewed as abhorrent should be dispassionately understood motivates Arkotong Longkumer's pathbreaking ethnography of the Sangh Parivar, a family of organizations comprising the Hindu right. The Greater India Experiment counters the urge to explain away their ideas and actions as inconsequential by demonstrating their efforts to influence local politics and culture in Northeast India. Longkumer constructs a comprehensive understanding of Hindutva, an idea central to the establishment of a Hindu nation-state, by focusing on the Sangh Parivar's engagement with indigenous peoples in a region that has long resisted the "idea of India." Contextualizing their activities as a Hindutva "experiment" within the broader Indian political and cultural landscape, he ultimately paints a unique picture of the country today.

    Abstract: Following the recent global housing boom, tract housing development became a billion-dollar industry in Mexico. At the national level, neoliberal housing policy has overtaken debates around land reform. For Indigenous peoples, access to affordable housing remains crucial to alleviating poverty. But as palapas, traditional thatch and wood houses, are replaced by tract houses in the Yucatán Peninsula, Indigenous peoples' relationship to land, urbanism, and finance is similarly transformed, revealing a legacy of debt and dispossession.Indigenous Dispossession examines how Maya families grapple with the ramifications of neoliberal housing policies. M. Bianet Castellanos relates Maya migrants' experiences with housing and mortgage finance in Cancún, one of Mexico's fastest-growing cities. Their struggle to own homes reveals colonial and settler colonial structures that underpin the city's economy, built environment, and racial order. But even as Maya people contend with predatory lending practices and foreclosure, they cultivate strategies of resistance from "waiting out" the state, to demanding Indigenous rights in urban centers. As Castellanos argues, it is through these maneuvers that Maya migrants forge a new vision of Indigenous urbanism.
