Abstract: Can we separate our image of the Vietnam War from our image of the American POW? And can we separate our image of the United States from myths surrounding that war and those hostages? In this daring and controversial new book, Elliott Gruner examines how POW mythology emerged from national legends going back to the colonial period, how the media and the government have portrayed prisoners of war in the past, and how the Vietnam POW in particular, became a prisoner of agendas set by others for their own purposes. POWs have been featured in literature, advertising, films, television, documentary news, and on audio cassettes. They have been feted, awarded medals, and paraded before us. We can find depictions of them on bracelets, flags, and the covers of national magazines. We have competing images of POWs like Sylvester Stallone's rampaging Rambo, James Stockdale, the hero who became a vice-presidential candidate, Robert DeNiro in a barbed-wire cage in the Deer Hunter, and Jeffrey Zaun looking battered on magazine covers during the Gulf War. Prisoners of Culture is about how we make sense of these pervasive images. In it, Gruner illuminates the assumptions behind all of these texts. He sorts out what is real and what is myth. He looks at the ways POWs have been used to portray the strength of America, the might of capitalism, the power of whiteness and of masculinity. He forces us to question what we would like to believe about ourselves and challenges us to discard the myths before they do us even greater harm.

Abstract: Lynn Chancer advances the provocative thesis that sadomasochism is far more prevalent in contemporary societies like the United States than we realize. According to Chancer, sexual sadomasochism is only the best-known manifestation of what is actually a much more broadly based social phenomenon. Moving from personal relationships to interactions in school, the workplace, and other institutions, Chancer uses a variety of examples that are linked by a recurrent pattern of behavior. She goes beyond the predominantly individualistic and psychological explanations generally associated with sadomasochism (including those popularized in the "how to" literature of the recent Women Who Love Too Much genre) toward a more sociological interpretation. Chancer suggests that the structure of societies organized along male-dominated and capitalistic lines reflects and perpetuates a sadomasochistic social psychology, creating a culture steeped in everyday experiences of dominance and subordination. In the first part of the book, Chancer discusses the prevalence of sadomasochistic cultural imagery in contemporary America and examines sadomasochism through several perspectives. She develops a set of definitional traits both through existential analysis of an instance of S/M sex and by incorporating a number of Hegelian and psychoanalytic concepts. In the second part of the book, she places sadomasochism in a broader context by exploring whether and how it appears in the workplace and how it relates to gender and race.

Abstract: Wendy Simonds examines what the phenomenon of self-help reading reveals about gender relations in contemporary American culture. She interviews women readers and editors of self-help books, and looks at bestsellers since 1963--those offering advice about managing relationships, enhancing sexuality, developing self-esteem, becoming assertive, and improving spiritual life--including Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique, Robin Norwood's Women Who Love Too Much, Robert Bly's Iron John, and Alex Comfort's The Joy of Sex. She argues that the genre's continued success is indicative of readers' search for meaning. Drawing on feminist theory and critical cultural studies, Simonds explores the appeal of self-help books, and asks what readers are making of them. She looks at how these books affect the social construction, cultural consumption, and transmission of ideas about gender and the self. She includes discussions of readers' assessments of the meaning and effectiveness of self-help reading; the interaction between religious and therapeutic ideology in the activity of reading this genre; and creators'--both authors' and editors'--views of their work. Are self-help books politically conservative or liberating, feminist or anti-feminist? Simonds finds that the genre tends to recommend individual change, not social change; yet it can also validate caring and can encourage a sense of community among women. In the end, though, these books provide "only an illusory cure for what ails us, collectively, as a culture."
