About This Video A short, crisp, and complete course that covers Hooks in React 18 Shows how to combine React Hooks with other React features in a more complex scenario Comes bundled with the code files and PPT uploaded on the GitHub repository In Detail Are you loving React but new to the Hooks API? Are you already using React Hooks but not sure you are doing the right thing? Or maybe you are sometimes getting tripped up by some of the React Hooks details? The addition of the Hooks API to React was quite a major change. Before React Hooks, most components had to be class-based. Now, with Hooks, these are often much simpler functional components. Hooks can be really simple to use. There are still plenty of ways you can mess up with React Hooks. And it often turns out there are many ways where you can improve your components by a better understanding of how each React Hook can be used. In this course, you are not just going to look at how to use React Hooks but also go behind the scenes and dive into the source code of React and the React ESLint rules to see why Hooks work the way they do. Here, you will learn all about using React Hooks and the pros and cons of the various Hooks. You will learn when to use useState() versus useReducer(). You will look at using useContext() efficiently. You will see when to use useLayoutEffect() and when useEffect() is better. You will be creating several reusable custom Hooks. Finally, you will combine all you learned into a more complete utility library to show how it all comes together. By the end of this course, you will have learned all about React Hooks with TypeScript. Abstract: The Gilded Rose is a classic refactoring kata, available in many languages at https://github.com/emilybache/GildedRose-Refactoring-Kata. In this video series we start with the Java version and show how to migrate it to Kotlin as well as refactoring the procedural code into both object-oriented and functional styles. The rules of the exercise are here. Part 1 takes the procedural Java code and ends with a nice OO solution, using inheritance to represent the different types of item. Part 2 replaces the inheritance with composition, getting perhaps closer to the heart of the domain. Part 3 removes the mutation inherent in the procedural code to give a nice functional solution. Part 4 is a bonus refactoring, starting from the beginning to see how far the update code can be improved while making no changes to any other files. The code is available at https://github.com/dmcg/gilded-rose-kata. This video content supplements the O'Reilly book Java to Kotlin, A Refactoring Guidebook.

Abstract: When Open GI transitioned one of its flagship products to an Azure-based SaaS offering, the work involved organizational redesign, developer upskilling, and architectural transformation. Key to tracking and continually improving all these efforts was Accelerate's "four key metrics" for supporting software delivery performance: lead time, deployment frequency, mean time to restore (MTTR), and change fail percentage. Join us for this Case Study with Thoughtworks tech principal Andrew Harmel-Law to explore Open GI's digital transformation and learn how the company set the four key metrics up and embedded them in the emerging build-and-learn culture. Andrew will cover each step in the process, from zero to getting the metrics up and running as a tool for team learning and improvement. Along the way, you'll also hear about the trade-offs, successes, and setbacks encountered as well as the wide-ranging impacts of all teams having these metrics at their disposal. Recorded on February 22, 2022. See the original event page for resources for further learning or watch recordings of other past events. O'Reilly Case Studies explore how organizations have overcome common challenges in business and technology through a series of one-hour interactive events. You'll engage in a live conversation with experts, sharing your questions and challenges while hearing their unique perspectives, insights, and lessons learned. Please note that slides or supplemental materials are not available for download from this recording. Resources are only provided at the time of the live event.

Abstract: Execute SQL with CSV datasets SQL is usually reserved for interacting with databases but in this video I show how you can use Databricks to run SQL queries against a CSV dataset. There are a few defaults that can make working with a CSV dataset problematic, like disabled schema infering and no headers. Abstract: Hobson and his colleagues try to figure out how to train word embeddings from scratch using the WikiText2 dataset in PyTorch. The WikiText2 dataset contains redacted words, but they were unable to find the "labels" that reveal the words masked with the symbol ``. If you try to use the `Wikipedia` package to retrieve Wikipedia pages directly, you may hit the `suggest` bug. There are more than 100 unanswered issues on the project, and the maintainer has pushed any changes for many years. The Tangible AI fork on GitLab fixes this search suggestion bug so we could easily crawl Wikipedia. Unfortunately, the Wikipedia-API package is not very useful for searching and crawling Wikipedia to retrieve text.

Abstract: Sponsored by Instaclustr The open source movement is now on full display in software development and is influencing other aspects of the movement, such as open culture and open data. To keep pace with the rise of open source and maintain their status in open source communities, many software companies are offering a hybrid known as "open core": a mix of open source and closed, proprietary software. Consequently, many people believe they're using open source when in fact they're using proprietary solutions. Join us for this edition of Meet the Expert with Ben Bromhead, CTO of Instaclustr, and Danese Cooper, open source leader and advocate, to explore the differences between open core and open source and better understand the long-term implications of open core software for vendors and customers alike. You'll learn about the benefits of open source compared with open core and discover why many companies are making the move to open source technology. What you'll learn and how you can apply it Understand why open source is becoming increasingly popular Learn why open source technologies are better than open core Learn how to sustain a company using open source This live event is for you because... You want to understand the differences between open source and open core technologies. You want to learn about the fundamental shifts that are transforming the business landscape and customer needs. Abstract: Learn how to use probability/statistics in all areas of computer science, data science, and machine learning About This Video A practical approach towards understanding the core concepts of probability and statistics Focuses on the applications of these important mathematical concepts in data science, machine learning, and other areas Understand why probability is the foundation of all modern machine learning In Detail The objective of this course is to give you a solid foundation needed to excel in all areas of computer science--specifically data science and machine learning. The issue is that most of the probability and statistics courses are too theory-oriented. They get tangled in the math without discussing the importance of applications. Applications are always given secondary importance. In this course, we take a code-oriented approach. We apply all concepts through code. In fact, we skip over all the useless theory that isn't relevant to computer science. Instead, we focus on the concepts that are more useful for data science, machine learning, and other areas of computer science. For instance, many probability courses skip over Bayesian inference. We will get to this immensely important concept rather quickly and give it due attention as it is widely thought of as the future of analysis! This way, you get to learn the most important concepts in this subject in the shortest amount of time possible without having to deal with the details of the less relevant topics. Once you have developed an intuition of the important stuff, you can then learn the latest and greatest models even on your own! Audience This course is designed for beginner ML and data science developers who need a solid foundation, for developers curious about data science and machine learning, for people looking to find out why probability is the foundation of all modern machine learning, or for developers who want to know how to harness the power of big data.

Abstract: You may be just getting started or have already started to learn how to build projects with your Raspberry Pi, but knowing what to do first and which path to follow can be quite hard, and you may feel baffled. The problem with most online resources for Raspberry Pi is that they focus on making you run existing programs so that you feel you've accomplished a lot; but, in reality, you've just copied or pasted some random code and didn't even scratch the surface. The why you should do that is not covered. Then the next time you need to do something on your own, you feel stuck and too dependent on other people's code. This course focuses on the why and helps you to become more autonomous with your Raspberry Pi. You will be able to start your own projects without having to desperately search for code on the internet to copy and paste. My personal goal is to help you understand enough to get started quickly and to make you think as a problem solver with engineer-level skills. This complete hands-on, step-by-step course targets the latest version of Raspberry Pi, which is Raspberry Pi 4. Everything also works perfectly for Raspberry Pi 2 and 3 versions. At the end of the course, you will have a strong foundation with your Raspberry Pi, and you will be able to start your own projects in no time.
