Abstract: Die Corona-Krise ist Anlass für die Thematisierung von Krisen im Kontext von Erwachsenen-/Weiterbildung.

Abstract: William Moorcroft (1872-1945) was one of the most celebrated potters of the early twentieth century. His career extended from the Arts and Crafts movement of the late Victorian age to the Austerity aesthetics of the Second World War. Rejecting mass production and patronised by Royalty, Moorcroft’s work was a synthesis of studio and factory, art and industry. He considered it his vocation to create an everyday art, both functional and decorative, affordable by more than a privileged few: ‘If only the people in the world would concentrate upon making all things beautiful, and if all people concentrated on developing the arts of Peace, what a world it might be,’ he wrote in a letter to his daughter in 1930. 'William Moorcroft, Potter: Individuality by Design' is a pioneering study by Jonathan Mallinson, Emeritus Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford. It follows the career of William Moorcroft through a wealth of private papers, letters and diaries, business correspondence and published reviews in newspapers, trade magazines and art journals. Richly illustrated with examples of his pottery, it explores what lay behind the unique impact of work sought by museums and treasured in homes the world over. The book examines an artist’s very individual response to the turbulent half century in which he worked. It will appeal to both specialists and general readers with an interest in pottery, the decorative arts, and the cultural history of the times

Abstract: No one has given the polymath Thomas Young (1773–1829) the all-round examination he so richly deserves—until now. Celebrated biographer Andrew Robinson portrays a man who solved mystery after mystery in the face of ridicule and rejection, and never sought fame. As a physicist, Young challenged the theories of Isaac Newton and proved that light is a wave. As a physician, he showed how the eye focuses and proposed the three-colour theory of vision, only confirmed a century and a half later. As an Egyptologist, he made crucial contributions to deciphering the Rosetta Stone. It is hard to grasp how much Young knew. This biography is the fascinating story of a driven yet modest hero who cared less about what others thought of him than for the joys of an unbridled pursuit of knowledge—with a new foreword by Martin Rees and a new postscript discussing polymathy in the two centuries since the time of Young. It returns this neglected genius to his proper position in the pantheon of great scientific thinkers

Abstract: Historical Developments in Cooperative Law -- Specificities and Essence of Cooperatives -- Cooperative Law and Sustainable Development -- Cooperatives’ Activities and Governance -- Conclusions.
Abstract: This book contributes to the development of literature on cooperative law while paying tribute to Hagen Henrÿ’s significant impact on this field at a global scale. Hagen Henrÿ is one of the most influential scholars in the field of cooperative law. His primary contribution has been in the area of public international cooperative law. His other areas of scientific interest include development law and comparative law. This honorary volume is focused on two main axes -- the essence of cooperatives as well as their activities and their governance. The contributions throw light on how these two axes are addressed by cooperative legislation across countries, regions and continents. In the varied perspectives that the contributions put together, both a theoretical and practical approach, the authors address central, current and crucial issues for the development of cooperative law. The book is a great resource for researcher scholars, as well as policy makers and industry players interested in the topic.

Abstract: Richmal Crompton, Author of Just William: A Literary Life celebrates the first two William books, Just William (1922) and More William (1922). As well as a study of her famous character William Brown, this book is an introduction to Richmal Crompton’s less well-known fiction and a story about her writing life. Her multifaceted identity—her deep knowledge of Classical Greek and Latin literature and languages, her life as a disabled writer, and her writing about domestic violence and disability—played a role in her literary persona. Jane McVeigh moves beyond Richmal Crompton’s impact on children’s literature and offers an appraisal of all her writing including her novels and short fiction, her media profile on radio and TV, her impact on her readers—both adults and children—and her international success. Particularly, McVeigh considers Crompton in the context of twentieth century woman writers and the development of crossover fiction for dual audiences. The book argues that as a woman writer pigeon-holed as a writer for children, Crompton’s other novels and short stories have been side-lined and overlooked. More than a century after the first book collection of Crompton’s William stories was published, this biography places Richmal Crompton among other twentieth century women writers. Jane McVeigh is Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Roehampton, UK where the Richmal Crompton Collection is located. .

Abstract: Hans and Rahel Liebeschütz were a German-Jewish scientific couple. Both grew up in Hamburg during the German Empire and began their scientific careers in the Weimar Republic. Rahel Liebeschütz was the first woman to habilitate at the Medical Faculty of the University of Hamburg. Hans Liebeschütz was a historian and habilitated in Medieval Latin philology in 1929. The transfer of power to the National Socialists meant the end of their academic careers. Nevertheless, they remained in Hamburg until 1938 and experienced with their three children the increasing disenfranchisement of Jews. It was not until 1938/1939 that they emigrated to England, where they remained after the end of the war. Their impressive career and difficult life in the "Third Reich" and in exile are traced from archival and personal sources

Abstract: Rosa Luxemburg was one of the most important intellectuals of the »long« 19th century, and her work in politics and within the European labor movement was extremely manifold. She understood socialism – especially to the displeasure of the Bolsheviks – as a unity of political and social freedoms. For this reason, she remains a figure of identification to this day, and her writings have an unbroken relevance. Luxemburg’s multifaceted life spanned from the birth of the German Empire to shortly after its end (1871–1919) and will be honored in a two-volume edition in the anniversary year 2021. Volume 1 provides an overview of her biography and takes stock of her political activities

Abstract: In a neo-liberal era concerned with discourses of responsible individualism and the ‘selfie’, there is an increased interest in personal lives and experiences. In contemporary life, the personal is understood to be political and these ideas cut across both the social sciences and humanities. This handbook is specifically concerned with auto/biography, which sits within the field of narrative, complementing biographical and life history research. Some of the contributors emphasise the place of narrative in the construction of auto/biography, whilst others disrupt the perceived boundaries between the individual and the social, the self and the other. The collection has nine sections: creativity and collaboration; families and relationships; epistolary lives; geography; madness; prison lives; professional lives; ‘race’; and social justice and disability. They illustrate the inter- and multi-disciplinary nature of auto/biography as a field. Each section features an introduction from a section editor, many of whom are established researchers and/or members of the British Sociological Association (BSA) Auto/Biography study group. The handbook provided the reader with cutting-edge research from authors at different stages in their careers, and will appeal to those with an interest in auto/biography, auto-ethnography, epistolary traditions, lived experiences, narrative analysis, the arts, education, politics, philosophy, history, personal life, reflexivity, research in practice and the sociology of the everyday.

Abstract: This Open Access biography chronicles the life and achievements of the Norwegian engineer and physicist Rolf Widerøe. Readers who meet him in the pages of this book will wonder why he isn't better known. The first of Widerøe's many pioneering contributions in the field of accelerator physics was the betatron, the second, the linear accelerator, both summarized in a 27 page PhD. The betatron revolutionized the fields of cancer treatment through radiation therapy and also nondestructive testing; hospitals worldwide installed Widerøe's machine and today’s modern radiation treatment equipment is based on his inventions. The most recent renaissance of the linac provides unprecedented x-ray intensities at Free Electron Laser (FEL) facilities in operation and construction worldwide. . Widerøe’s story also includes a fair share of drama, particularly during World War II when both Germans and the Allies vied for his collaboration. Widerøe held leading positions in multinational industry groups and was one of the consultants for building the world's largest nuclear laboratory, CERN, in Switzerland. He gained over 200 patents, received several honorary doctorates and a number of international awards. The author, a professional writer and maker of TV documentaries, has gained access to hitherto restricted archives in several countries, which provided a wealth of new material and insights, in particular in relation to the war years. She tells here a gripping and illuminating story

Abstract: This study develops a media biographical perspective on adolescents’ use of smartphones for photography. It investigates smartphones’ relevance in biographical work as part of identity development and examines their use against the background of media biographical experiences, while also reflecting on biographicality and visual literacy as goals of media pedagogy. Using the documentary method, the author interprets interviews with and photographs of young people, while systematically incorporating the communication contexts of social media. This results in the typology of 'visual biographical work', which reveals milieu-specific forms of communication and biographical processes related to photography

Abstract: »Robert Davidsohn (1853-1937). People I knew – Memories of an Octogenarian« The book presents the annotated edition of the memoir of Robert Davidsohn (1853–1937), a German-Jewish scholar, still known for his history of Medieval Florence. The autobiography is the document of a life between Germany and Italy, of a man who after a career as a journalist and a newspaper publisher in ›Kaiserreich‹ Berlin, chose to become an independent historian living in Florence and gaining international academic recognition, and, as an old man, had to confront the triumph of Fascism and Nazism
Abstract: As Hamburg merchants, the Lipperts have successfully traded with South Africa since the 1850s. As donators they have earned their living in their hometown for decades. The family's ancestor, David Lippert, came to Hamburg from Mecklenburg in the early 1830s. His marriage gave him access to the upper class - and a widely ramified family: The Hahns, the Robinows and the 〈a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.15460/HUP.MFW.9en.127"〉Beits〈/a〉 belonged to the next of kin, later also the Zacharias, Wibel, Bunsen, Bülau and Wentzel families. The focus of this publication is the life of three sons of David Lippert: the brothers Ludwig Julius (1835-1918), Wilhelm August (1845-1918) and Eduard Amandus (1844-1925). Ludwig belonged to the founding generation of the diamond industry in South Africa - and was one of the initiators of the Bismarck Monument at the Millerntor. William became consul in Cape Town just at the time when the Empire acquired "Deutsch-Südwest" ("German Southwest"), the first German colony. Eduard became an opponent of the British imperialist Cecil Rhodes in the Transvaal as a friend of President Paul Kruger. In Hamburg he was known as a patron of the observatory. The life of the three brothers as art collectors, founders, builders, landowners, rich in battles, blows of fate, defeats and victories is described for the first time in this dedicated publication of the series Mäzene für Wissenschaft of the Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung

Abstract: Julius Carl Ertel held a special position as director and later as sole owner of a copper smelter in the commercial and trading city of Hamburg. Born in Wroclaw, he came to the Hanseatic city at the age of 26. Together with Rudolph Bieber, he founded Ertel, Bieber & Co. in 1872. The company had its facilities in the middle of the harbour area. However, Ertel gained its decisive importance through the extensive connections he made with numerous other companies throughout Germany. In the supervisory boards of these companies, he played an active role in building up the expanding economy of the Gründerzeit. Ertel was not a man who pushed himself into the foreground. This early donor of the Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung acted as a networker in the modern sense of the word

Abstract: For five decades Golda Meir was at the center of the political arena in Israel and left her mark on the development of the Yishuv and the state. She was a unique woman, great leader, with a magnetic personality, a highly complex individual. She held some of the most important positions that her party and the State could bestow. She fulfilled most of them with talent and dignity. She failed in the top job – that of Prime Minister. This biography traces her origins, her American roots, her immediate family, her failed marriage, her rise in the party, the trade union movement, her massive and enduring achievements as Secretary of Labor and Housing, her ten year stint as foreign minister and finally the reasons that led to her failure as prime minister. She was a very good tactician, far less a strategist. She was a major builder of modern Israel whose influence on that country, on Israel-American relations and on Jewish history was evident primarily from 1969 to 1974. The author who served as spokesman for Golda Meir in 1973-1974 weaves a gripping story of one of the builders and leaders of the State of Israel

Abstract: This book is a study of black masculinity in the twenty-first century. Through a series of critical and interdisciplinary essays, this work examines the image of the black male in American society as a Toby Waller stereotype. Toby Waller is the fictional, yet symbolic character from Alex Haley’s highly acclaimed book and mini-series, Roots. It is a richly detailed, fictional story about slavery and one enslaved African man’s struggle to regain freedom. The parallel of the life of enslaved Toby Waller is similar to present day black males. Both are individuals who are often stripped of their cultural identity and exist within an institutional and systemic framework that devalues black male life. This dichotomy is the historical platform to discuss how those in the annals of white America demarcate which embodiment merits inclusion into societal acceptance

Abstract: "This is the first full-scale biography, in any language, of a towering figure in German and European Romanticism: August Wilhelm Schlegel whose life, 1767 to 1845, coincided with its inexorable rise. As poet, translator, critic and oriental scholar, Schlegel's extraordinarily diverse interests and writings left a vast intellectual legacy, making him a foundational figure in several branches of knowledge. He was one of the last thinkers in Europe able to practise as well as to theorise, and to attempt to comprehend the nature of culture without being forced to be a narrow specialist. With his brother Friedrich, for example, Schlegel edited the avant-garde Romantic periodical Athenaeum; and he produced with his wife Caroline a translation of Shakespeare, the first metrical version into any foreign language. Schlegel's Lectures on Dramatic Art and Literature were a defining force for Coleridge and for the French Romantics. But his interests extended to French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese literature, as well to the Greek and Latin classics, and to Sanskrit. August Wilhelm Schlegel is the first attempt to engage with this totality, to combine an account of Schlegel's life and times with a critical evaluation of his work and its influence. Through the study of one man's rich life, incorporating the most recent scholarship, theoretical approaches, and archival resources, while remaining easily accessible to all readers, Paulin has recovered the intellectual climate of Romanticism in Germany and traced its development into a still-potent international movement. The extraordinarily wide scope and variety of Schlegel's activities have hitherto acted as a barrier to literary scholars, even in Germany. In Roger Paulin, whose career has given him the knowledge and the experience to grapple with such an ambitious project, Schlegel has at last found a worthy exponent."--Publisher's website

Abstract: "Greg Burgess's important new study explores the short life of the High Commission for Refugees (Jewish and Other) Coming from Germany, from its creation by the League of Nations in October 1933 to the resignation of High Commissioner, James G. McDonald, in December 1935. The book relates the history of the first stage of refugees from Germany through the prism of McDonald and the High Commission. It analyses the factors that shaped the Commission's formation, the undertakings the Commission embarked upon and its eventual failure owing to external complications. The League of Nations and the Refugees from Nazi Germany argues that, in spite of the Commission's failure, the refugees from Nazi Germany and the High Commission's work mark a turn in conceptions of international humanitarian responsibilities when a state defies standards of proper behaviour towards its citizens. From this point on, it was no longer considered sufficient or acceptable for states to respect the sovereign rights of another if the rights of citizens were being violated. Greg Burgess discusses this idea, amongst others, in detail as part of what is a crucial volume for all scholars and students of Nazi Germany, the Holocaust and modern Jewish history "--

Abstract: This book adopts a biographical approach to understanding the culture surrounding the Mexico City youth rebellion of the 1960s. Mary Kay Vaughan's chronicle of the life of painter Pepe Z{ldbltil}{ogon}iga counters a literature that portrays post-1940 Mexican history as a series of uprisings against state repression, injustice, and social neglect that culminated in the student protests of 1968. Rendering Z{ldbltil}{ogon}iga's coming of age on the margins of formal politics, Vaughan depicts midcentury Mexico City as a culture of growing prosperity, state largesse, and a vibrant, transnationally-informed public life that produced a multifaceted youth movement brimming with creativity and criticism of convention. By discussing the influences that shaped Zuniga's worldview, she historicizes the process of subject formation and shows how doing so offers new perspectives on the events of 1968

Abstract: This abridged and revised edition of the original book (Springer-Verlag Vienna, 2001) offers the only comprehensive history and documentation of the Vienna Circle based on new sources with an innovative historiographical approach to the study of science. With reference to previously unpublished archival material and more recent literature, it refutes a number of widespread clichés about "neo-positivism" or "logical positivism". Following some insights on the relation between the history of science and the philosophy of science, the book offers an accessible introduction to the complex subject of "the rise of scientific philosophy” in its socio-cultural background and European philosophical networks till the forced migration in the Anglo-Saxon world. The first part of the book focuses on the origins of Logical Empiricism before World War I and the development of the Vienna Circle in "Red Vienna" (with the "Verein Ernst Mach"), its fate during Austro-Fascism (Schlick's murder 1936) and its final expulsion by National-Socialism beginning with the "Anschluß" in 1938. It analyses the dynamics of the Schlick-Circle in the intellectual context of "late enlightenment" including the minutes of the meetings from 1930 on for the first time published and presents an extensive description of the meetings and international Unity of Science conferences between 1929 and 1941. The chapters introduce the leading philosophers of the Schlick Circle (e.g., Hans Hahn, Otto Neurath, Rudolf Carnap, Philipp Frank, Felix Kaufmann, Edgar Zilsel) and describe the conflicting interaction between Moritz Schlick and Otto Neurath, the long term communication between Moritz Schlick, Friedrich Waismann and Ludwig Wittgenstein, as well as between the Vienna Circle with Heinrich Gomperz and Karl Popper. In addition, Karl Menger's "Mathematical Colloquium" with Kurt Gödel is presented as a parallel movement. The final chapter of this section describes the demise of the Vienna Circle and the forced exodus of scientists and intellectuals from Austria. The second part of the book includes a bio-bibliographical documentation of the Vienna Circle members and for the first time of the assassination of Moritz Schlick in 1936, followed by an appendix comprising an extensive list of sources and literature

Abstract: According to a senior citizen of a trading company in Hamburg, if he is too stupid for sugar, let him study,"" Obviously, such an environment did not particularly appreciate science. Nevertheless, Senator Werner von Melle succeeded in collecting a sum of almost four million marks from many foresighted Hamburg citizens, so that the Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung (Hamburg Scientific Foundation) was able to come into being on 12 April 1907. This first volume of the series ""Patrons for Science"" honours in short biographies all personalities who have been involved in the foundation's founding phase, either financially or through their participation on the board of trustees. Many of them have become well-known far beyond Hamburg, others have been completely forgotten. The book is introduced by the essay "Current Past" which embeds the founders of the foundation in the cultural and scientific-political context of Hamburg around the turn of the century. After its first publication in 2007, this volume is now in its 2nd edition completely revised and available in colour

Abstract: Alfred Beit (1853-1906) has been called a financial genius. When he went to South Africa in 1875, no one could imagine that the son of converted Hamburg Jews would soon become one of the richest men of his time - thanks to the diamonds of Kimberley and the gold of the Witwatersrand. As a co-founder of De Beers Ltd. and close friend of Cecil Rhodes, the charismatic promoter of British imperialism in southern Africa, Alfred Beit became one of the colonial fathers of Rhodesia. A British subject from 1898, he tried to mediate politically in the conflicts that developed between Germany and Britain with their respective empires, but failed to achieve a reconciliation between the two powers.Alfred Beit was himself a very prominent art collector and throughout his career he generously supported countless nonprofit-making institutions. TheHamburg Scientific Foundation itself owes its founding to one of his major donations. Beit's will passed on his wealth to a trust, which has financed development aid projects since 1906.This is the first comprehensive biography of this outstanding businessman, art collector and internationally active philanthropist

Abstract: Profiles the eminent 18th century natural philosopher Henry Cavendish, best known for his work in chemistry and physics and one of the most baffling personalities in the history of science. In these chapters we are introduced to the psychology of science and of scientists and we learn about Cavendish’s life and times. His personality is examined from two perspectives: one is that he had a less severe form of autism, as has been claimed; the other is that he was eccentric and a psychological disorder was absent. Henry Cavendish lived a life of science, possibly more completely than any other figure in the history of science: a wealthy aristocrat, he became a dedicated scientist. This study brings new information and a new perspective to our understanding of the man. The scientific and non-scientific sides of his life are brought closer together, as the author traces topics including his appearance, speech, wealth, religion and death as well as Cavendish’s life of natural philosophy where objectivity and accuracy, writing and recognition all played a part. The author traces aspects of Cavendish’s personality, views and interpretations of him, and explores notions of eccentricity and autism before detailing relevant aspects of the travels made by our subject. The author considers the question “How do we talk about Cavendish?” and provides a useful summary of Cavendish’s travels. This book will appeal to a wide audience, from those interested in 18th century history or history of science, to those interested in incidences of autism in prominent figures from history. This volume contains ample relevant illustrations, several interesting appendices and it includes a useful index and bibliography.

Abstract: This new addition to Springer’s series on Key Thinkers in World Education tracks the intellectual and philosophical journey of a trail-blazing innovator whose ideas have fired the imaginations of progressive educationalists for almost a century. The volume’s in-depth analysis of the educational philosophy of Bengali polymath Rabindranath Tagore offers an unrivalled focus on his highly influential views. Tagore-poet, internationalist, humanist, and the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for literature-lived on the cusp of change between two momentous centuries in world civilization and foresaw the dissolution of colonialism and the globalization of culture. His ideas on education placed the creative individual at the centre of the quest for knowledge. Eschewing the artificial distinctions between elementary and higher learning, he advocated the importance of sowing the seed of humanism as early as possible, and fostering the individual’s enjoyment of education as well as their courage to challenge conventions. In doing so, he anticipated the modern concern with critical thinking at the same time as he was encouraging independence of thought and action as a counter to colonial oppression and condescension. Concise yet thorough, this volume on one of the most original thinkers of the last century covers every aspect of Tagore’s highly original educational philosophy

Abstract: This book revises the picture of the teacher and educator of princes, Vittorino Rambaldoni da Feltre (c. 1378, Feltre -- 1446, Mantua), taking a completely new approach to show his work and life from the individual perspectives created by his students and contemporaries. From 1423 to 1446, Vittorino da Feltre was in charge of a school in Mantua, where his students included not only the offspring of Italy’s princes, but also the first generation of authors dealing with books in print. Among his students were historians like Bartolomeo Sacchi (named Platina), who wrote an extensive history of the popes, and mathematicians like Jacopo Cassiano (Cremonensis), who translated the work of Archimedes from Greek into Latin. Vittorino is still regarded as the educationalist of Italian Renaissance humanism per sé. This work not only contributes to the study of the history of Italian humanist institutions, it also uses available sources to demonstrate the development of a new attitude to education in Italy

Abstract: Heinrich von Ohlendorff became one of Hamburg's richest merchants by trading with Peru-Guano. Together with his wife Elisabeth he founded a family of twelve. In 1880, Elisabeth began to write her diary. Until her death she filled 45 obese notebooks with astonishing regularity. The approximately 20,000 pages provide exciting insights into the life of an up-and-coming family that is firmly integrated into the society of Hamburg's upper middle classes. The pages make it possible to portray Heinrich von Ohlendorff in the mirror of his wife's diaries. At the same time, it is possible to draw a fascinating panoramic picture of the "fine" Hamburg society at the beginning of the 20th century. This is the first biography of this merchant from Hamburg who was one of the donors of the Hamburg Scientific Foundation.Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator

Abstract: As a creative entrepreneur, Edmund Siemers was one of the pioneers of petroleum trading in Germany. Later he succeeded as importer of Chilean nitre and built up his own fleet of ships. Finally he became a builder and landowner in the north of Hamburg. However, Edmund Siemers became really famous for his two large foundations: in 1896 Edmundsthal-Siemerswalde in Geesthacht, one of the first pulmonary treatment centres in Germany, and in 1907 the lecture building on the Moorweide, still a symbol of "the University" in Hamburg.Edmund Siemers' life is equally linked to the Hamburg, German and Transatlantic economic history of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He embodies a donor from Hamburg's upper middle classes in an ideal-typical manner. This is the first biography of "Hamburg's Carnegie", who also appeared as a donor and member of the board of trustees of the Hamburg Scientific Foundation

Abstract: Arts-Based Research, Autoethnography, and Music Education: Singing Through a Culture of Marginalization invites readers into miroslav pavle manovskis journey into quest of how he found his voiceliterally and figurativelyby reflecting and storying from his fluid identity and roles as an artist, singer, learner, music teacher, researcher while empowering others to find their own voice. This book is also an arts-based autoethnographic rendering of the authors experience being tormented, harassed, and called gay as a means to negatively target and marginalize him. Further, this work contributes to the literature of those mercilessly harassed for perceived effeminate characteristics and to the canon of ways we may be able to rescue ourselvesto positively transformfrom prior wreckage a part of our lives. It makes significant contributions to the literature on qualitative inquiry, arts-based research, autoethnography, music education, and vocal pedagogy as a means of re-presenting a rich tapestry of life experience. While this text can be read entirely for pleasure or personal growth, it will make an outstanding springboard for conversation in courses across the disciplines that deal with teacher education, music education, gender and sexual identity/orientation, intimacy, relationships and relational communication, prejudice, bullying and more. This award-wining book will additionally be of great value in courses on autoethnography, life writing, narrative inquiry, arts-based research, and music education. Of all the recent examples of textual experiments in the social sciences that aim to create a dialectical intertwining of the autobiographical and the theoretical, this book is among the very best. Manovskis work is at once artful, poignant, bravely self-revelatory, while simultaneously informed by the scholarship of an impressive array of academics from diverse academic fields. What awaits the reader is nothing less than a full-fledged educational experience that dazzles the mind and stirs the heart as it opens up the future. Abstract: Prince Nikolaus II Esterházy (1765–1833) is known as one of the greatest collectors and patrons of the arts of his time. Based on an ideological, historical and psychological framework, the biography fully illustrates his lifetime achievement with regard to the visual and performing arts. Against the backdrop of political and social changes in Europe between the French Revolution and the Year Of Revolutions 1848, this book discusses to what extent art served as a medium and strategy in the aristocracy’s effort to preserve its leading role in society, despite a loss of power as the Estates-based society was gradually replaced by one based on social classes

Abstract: In many Southeast Asian countries, anti-colonial nationalist struggles provided the first arena in which women began to be involved in politics. In post-colonial times nationalism continues to offer women opportunities for political activity. Yet books on Southeast Asian nationalist movements make very little - if any - mention of women in their ranks. Biographical studies of politically active women in Southeast Asia are also rare. "Women in Southeast Asian Nationalist Movements" is therefore groundbreaking both in highlighting the roles of women in nationalist movements in the region and in taking a biographical approach. In this book, experts on 7 countries examine the experiences of 12 women who have been active in nationalist movements in Southeast Asia. The women selected for study range from well known to little known, and the nationalist movements in which they have been involved date from the early 20th century to the present day. The chapters show women negotiating their own subjectivity and agency at the confluence of colonialism, patriarchal traditions, and modern ideals of national and personal emancipation. We gain a sense of the constraints imposed on them by wider social and political structures, and of what it was like to live in their given time and place

Abstract: This is one of those biographies that provide a window onto the broader understanding of science in its social and cultural context. Using Sergei Nikolaevich Vinogradskii’s career and scientific research trajectory as a point of entry, this book illustrates the manner in which microbiologists, chemists, botanists, and plant physiologists inscribed the concept of a “cycle of life” into their investigations. Their research transformed a longstanding notion into the fundamental approaches and concepts that underlay the new ecological disciplines that emerged in the 1920s. The book presents a reconstruction of significant episodes of Vinogradskii’s laboratory practices and the role of theory in their development. It paints the broader picture of the history of ecology, microbiology and soil science and how these are uniquely united: through the concept of the cycle of life.

Abstract: Tracing through anecdote and science the development of a hotly contended area of research, this account expounds the dawn of genetic engineering in the United States in 1974, through the early stages of its uptake in South Africa, to the current situation, in which approximately 80 percent of maize in South Africa is genetically modified for drought resistance. The guide through this history is Jennifer Thomson, whose own story of how she came to choose genetic modification (GM) as a career and her path-breaking involvement in the development of GM research. She describes the spread of this technology into other parts of Africa and her venture into unknown territory to develop crops resistant to drought, insects, and viruses, a journey in which she came up against the multinational Monsanto. The book describes a remarkable personal and scientific evolution and looks to a future in which staple crops may be grown in difficult conditions by smallholder farmers and help Africans achieve food security

Abstract: Zoltán Peterecz presents in this monograph the personality and work of Jeremiah Smith, Jr. (1870–1935), the League of Nations Commissioner-General for the 1924 loan to Hungary. He deals also in extenso with the economic and political problems associated with the financial reconstruction of Hungary – both on the domestic and international scene. In his multidimensional presentation, Zoltán Peterecz gives a vivid insight into the official and unofficial trends in the foreign policy of the United States after World War I. The author skilfully interweaves the diplomatic and economic history against the background of international events, and supports the narrative with an impressive body of diverse sources, which include archival materials, contemporary newspaper citations from a number of countries, and an extensive range of secondary sources. The final result is a valuable, well-executed and well-written work that will be welcomed not only by students of the interwar period, but also among non-specialist readers. Zoltán Peterecz was awarded his PhD by the Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, Hungary, in 2010. He specialises in American foreign policy and American-Hungarian relations in the 20th century. He is an Assistant Professor at the Department of American Studies, Eszterházy Károly College, Eger, Hungary

Abstract: Janice Gary never walked alone without a dog - a big dog. Once, she was an adventurer, a girl who ran off to California with big dreams and hopes of leaving her past behind. But after a brutal rape, her youthful bravado vanished, replaced by a crippling need for safety. When she rescues a gangly Lab-Rottweiler pup,Gary is sure she’s found her biggest protector yet. But after Barney is attacked by a vicious dog, he becomes a clone of his attacker, trying to kill any dog that comes near him. Walking with Barney is impossible. Yet walking without him is unthinkable. After years of being exiled by her terror and Barney’s defensiveness, Janice risks taking her dog to a park near the Chesapeake Bay. There, she begins the messy, lurching process of walking into her greatest fears. As the leash of the past unravels, Barney sheds the defensive behaviors that once shackled him and Gary steps out of the self-imposed isolation that held her captive for three decades. Beautifully written, Short Leash is much more than a “dog story” or a book about recovering from trauma. It is a moving tale of love and loss, the journey of a broken soul finding its way toward wholeness

Abstract: A powerful collection of essays that chronicles the perspectives and lived experiences (in narrative form) of 34 diverse pedagogues (some likely familiar, some likely not). Each featured pedagogue has contributed in important and varied ways to the meaning, impact, and influence of critical pedagogy … inspires readers to act with both honorable anger" and a "pedagogy of love" in their work to confront and address injustices and their impact on society.” -- Midwest Book Review, Feb 2019 The diverse range of critical pedagogues presented in this book comes from a variety of backgrounds with respect to race, gender, and ethnicity, from various geographic places and eras, and from an array of complex political, historical, religious, theological, social, cultural, and educational circumstances which necessitated their leadership and resistance. How each pedagogue uniquely lives in that tension of dealing with pain and struggle, while concurrently fostering a pedagogy that is humanizing, is deeply influenced by their individual autobiographical lens of reality, the conceptual thought that enlightened them, the circumstances that surrounded them, and the conviction that drove them. To be sure, people of justice, people who resist, are framed by a vision that embraces an inclusive, tolerant, more loving community that passionately calls for a more democratic citizenship. That is just what the 34 critical pedagogues represented in this text heroically do. Through the highlighting of their lives and work, this book is not only an excellent resource to serve as a springboard to engage us in dialogue about pivotal issues and concerns related to justice, equality, and opportunity, but also to prompt us to further explore deeper into the lives and thought of some extraordinary people. " An ambitious undertaking ... Kirylo’s narrative enterprise, which seeks to chronicle the lives of transformative pedagogues, is a project whose time has come. This text is an excellent resource for all those interested in the aesthetic that, as Kierkegaard believed, exercised power for the common good. "—LUIS MIRÓN (from the Foreword)

Once they were published, his work had a remarkable impact on the evolution of seventeenth-century thought. However, as his identity was unknown, divergent interpretations of their meaning quickly sprang up. Seventeenth-century readers understood him as an anti-Aristotelian thinker and as a precursor of Descartes. Twentieth-century historians depicted him as an atomist, natural scientist and even as a chemist. And yet, when Gorlaeus died, he was a beginning student in theology. His thought must in fact be placed at the intersection between philosophy, the nascent natural sciences, and theology. The aim of this book is to shed light on Gorlaeus' family circumstances, his education at Franeker and Leiden, and on the virulent Arminian crisis which provided the context within which his work was written. It also attempts to define Gorlaeus' place in the history of Dutch philosophy and to assess the influence that it exercised in the evolution of philosophy and science, and notably in early Cartesian circles."--Page 4 of cover , David Gorlæus (1591-1612); Table of Contents; Preface; Chapter 1 Introducing Gorlæus; Chapter 2 Gorlæus' Two Treatises; Chapter 3 Gorlæus' Life; Chapter 4 Gorlæus' Place in the History of Seventeenth-Century Thought; Notes; Bibliography; Index , En

Abstract: This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. The study investigates the cultural production of the visual iconography of popular pleasure grounds from the eighteenth century pleasure garden to the contemporary theme park. Deborah Philips identifies the literary genres, including fairy tale, gothic horror, Egyptiana and the Western which are common to carnival sites, tracing their historical transition across a range of media to become familiar icons of popular culture.Though the bricolage of narratives and imagery found in the contemporary leisure zone has been read by many as emblematic of postmodern culture, the author argues that the clash of genres and stories is less a consequence of postmodern pastiche than it is the result of a history and popular tradition of conventionalised iconography

Abstract: The enduring legacy of a legendary investor Called the "greatest stock picker of the century" by Money magazine, legendary fund manager Sir John Templeton is remembered as one of the world's foremost investors, known for his pioneering insights and phenomenal investment performance over a professional career which spanned more than half a century. Templeton's Way with Money provides a unique, professional 21st century appraisal of what made this formidable investor the success he was-and why his methods remain as valid today as they were during his long and successful lifetime. Written by two investment experts, one of whom worked closely with Sir John for ten years, and drawing on previously unpublished documents, the book explains in detail how John Templeton's simple but effective investment philosophy of riding out the ups and downs of the market cycle continues to be as relevant as ever for professional and private investors alike. Key features include: A fresh and detailed reappraisal, drawing on a number of previously unpublished documents, of the philosophy which Templeton applied to the two phase of his investment career-first as an investment counsel, and latterly as the most successful global fund manager of his generation A detailed and original study of the performance of the Templeton Growth Fund, demonstrating in detail how Templeton achieved the Holy Grail of investment-above average returns with below average risk First hand accounts from former colleagues of their experience in working with Templeton-including those of author Alasdair Nairn's ten-year career working with and for the investment management organization that was Templeton's life work Proprietary and original research which explains why Templeton's seemingly simple investment philosophy is sure to produce exceptional returns if implemented effectively Current market conditions make Templeton's contrarian investment method of profiting from pessimism particularly relevant today, and this book a must-read for anyone working with investments.
