Abstract: Immigrants as outsiders in the two Irelands examines how a wide range of immigrant groups who settled in the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland since the 1990s are faring today. It asks to what extent might different immigrant communities be understood as outsiders in both jurisdictions. Chapters include analyses of the specific experiences of Polish, Filipino, Muslim, African, Roma, refugee and asylum seeker populations and of the experiences of children, as well as analyses of the impacts of education, health, employment, housing, immigration law, asylum policy, the media and the contemporary politics of borders and migration on successful integration. The book is aimed at general readers interested in understanding immigration and social change and at students in areas including sociology, social policy, human geography, politics, law and psychology.

Abstract: Women's Legal Landmarks commemorates the centenary of women's admission in 1919 to the legal profession in the UK and Ireland by identifying key legal landmarks in women's legal history. Over 90 authors write on landmarks that represent a significant achievement or marked an important stage or turning point in women's engagement with law and law reform. The landmarks embrace a wide range of topics, including the right to vote, equal pay, forced marriage, sexual violence, abortion and the ordination of women bishops, as well as the life stories of women who were the first to undertake key legal roles and positions. The collection was produced using an established feminist practice whereby each contribution was presented in collaborative workshops to ensure shared knowledge and insights into both the legal area and the historical context. Women's Legal Landmarks offers a scholarly intervention into the recovery of women's lost history, employing the methodology of feminist legal history to provide accounts which are accurate as to both law and historical context and which, taken together, demonstrate women's agency and activism in the achievement of law reform and justice

Abstract: Sir Shane Leslie once wrote that 'Country life was entirely organized to give nobility and gentry and demi-gentry a good time.'0Throughout Ireland and Britain the country house was a centre of hospitality, entertainment and leisure, with the hosting of house parties, soirees and balls. Pastimes included photography, painting, astronomy and taxidermy. Outdoors the parkland was used for a variety of sporting activities including archery, cricket, croquet and shooting, as well as local sports events, and beyond the demesne activities included hunting, horse racing and yachting. In Ireland demesne lands were developed as golf courses and estates offered land to the nationalist-dominated Gaelic Athletic Association for football and hurling.0This volume provides fresh and original insights into how leisure and sport underpinned the social hierarchy of country houses and their local communities in Ireland and Britain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries
Note: This volume is based on a series of presentations at the Sixteenth Annual Historic Houses Conference, held under the auspices of the Centre for the Study of Historic Irish Houses and Estates at Maynooth University in 2018, entitled 'Sport and leisure and the country house'.--Page xi. - Includes bibliographical references and index

Abstract: "Covering three centuries of unprecedented demographic and economic changes, this textbook is an authoritative and comprehensive view of the shaping of Irish society, at home and abroad, from the famine of 1740 to the present day. The first major work on the history of modern Ireland to adopt a social history perspective, it focuses on the experiences and agency of Irish men, women and children, Catholics and Protestants, and in the North, South and the diaspora. An international team of leading scholars survey key changes in population, the economy, occupations, property ownership, class and migration, and also consider the interaction of the individual and the state through welfare, education, crime and policing. Drawing on a wide range of disciplinary approaches and consistently setting Irish developments in a wider European and global context, this is an invaluable resource for courses on modern Irish history and Irish studies. The first major work on the history of modern Ireland to move away from the traditional domination of political narratives and adopt a social history perspective. Incorporates up-to-date research on topics such as population, the economy, occupations, property ownership, class and migration. Examines the interaction of the individual and the state in the areas of welfare, education, crime and policing"--Publisher description

Abstract: Unravel follows the western worlds least wanted clothes, on a journey across northern India, from sea to industrial interior. They get sent to Panipat, a sleepy town and the only place in the world that wants them, recycling them back into yarn. Reshma is a bright, inquisitive woman working in a textile recycling factory in small time India, who dreams of travelling the vast distances the clothes she handles have. While Reshma shows us how these garments get transformed, she and other women workers reflect on these cloths. Despite limited exposure to western culture, they construct a picture of how the west is, using both their imagination and the rumours that travel with the cast-offs.--Original container.

Abstract: Nigerian writer Dul Johnson returns to Tarok land to observe the local death rituals and the record of the Tarok ways of dealing with grief and honoring departed. This film provides a rare and detailed record of local religious practices. It bears witness to the fluid ways in which communities, families and individuals construct their religious and cultural identities, and also reseals the tense interplay between the modern and the traditional. Johnson's search for meaning in Tarok land yields a compelling portrait of Tarok culture, and provides a unique contributrion to the knowledge of contemporary religious life of Tarok communities of Mile 4 Langtan South, Tunkun and Wan Langtan North, Plateau State, Nigeria.

Abstract: Amin is the story of an ancient musical tradition and one man's struggle to preserve it. It is told using a unique approach to documentary storytelling that challenges the boundaries of fiction and reality. Amin Aghaie is a young modern nomad from the south of Iran. He has dedicated his life to preserving, documenting and teaching the unique musical tradition of his people, the Qashqai tribe, a tradition on the verge of extinction. Despite the fact that Amin's family face steep financial and cultural obstacles, they are devoted to their art and culture and express that by supporting the work of their talented musician son. Every summer, Amin travels to remote towns and villages to record the music of the surviving masters whose numbers decline each year. His nomadic family sell their meager belongings to help support their son's education in performance and ethnomusicology at Tchaikovsky's Conservatory in Kiev, Ukraine, but it is not enough. Amin, desperate to finish his academic education, sells his violins one at a time just to pay for his tuition. Awards: Award of Excellence at Yamagata Documentary Film Festival in 2011; Asian Vision Award at Taiwan International Documentary 2010; Film Festival Special Distinction at Dubai International Film Festival in 2010; Nominated for Best Documentary, Asia Pacific Screen Awards, in 2011.

Abstract: Examines the traditional annual Brazilian carnival where rival groups dress up in costumes and choose a carnival king and queen. It examines the history and roots of the custom, which was introduced for the slaves in the 17th century, but which was also intermerged with a festival for a West African god, master of rebellion, chaos and revellry. Divination, sacrifice, spirit possession and withcraft are also elements that play a part in the carnival.

Abstract: With the fall of the Stalinist regime in Albania, one of the poorest countries in Europe, the people of a remote mountain village, Rrogam, are faced with the dilemma of how to re-allocate the land and flocks after 40 years of collectivism. For the first time they have to make their own decisions in the face of an uncertain, changing future, and eke out an existence without the direction from above to which they have become accustomed. Rrogam is a small Catholic village more than 3,000 feel above sea level in Northern Albania. Closed to foreigners since the second world war, the Disappearing World team were the first outsiders to fully explore this area in the north. Traditional Northern Albanian society stressed honour and etiquette. Today these traditional codes have been replaced with Albanian law, effecting the Rrogamis deeply. But Northern Albanians still follow their own rules for interpersonal relations and stick to traditional behaviour when it does not conflict with new Albanian law.
