Abstract: "Why do women accumulate less wealth than men? Why do marital separations impoverish women while they do not prevent men from becoming wealthy? This groundbreaking work approaches the institution of family from a materialist point of view, breaking with the dominant theory of modern, economically disinterested family relations. It takes seriously the economists, in the wake of Thomas Piketty, who observe a return to property inequality, based on the legacy of capitalism in the twenty-first century. It reconsiders the effectivity of legal changes that profess formal equality between men and women while condoning inequality in practice"--

Abstract: "Uncontrollable Women is a history of radical, reformist and revolutionary women between the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789 and the passing of the Great Reform Act in 1832. Very few of them are well-known today; some were unknown even in their own day. All of them contributed something to the world we now inhabit. At a time when women were supposed to leave politics to men they spoke, wrote, marched, organised, asked questions, challenged power structures, sometimes went to prison and even died. History has not usually been kind to them, and they have frequently been pushed into asides or footnotes, dismissed as secondary, or spoken over, for, or through by men and sometimes other women. In this book, they take centre stage in both their own stories and those of others, and in doing so bring different voices to the more familiar accounts of the period. These women and many others played a part in developing political ideas and freedoms as we know them today, and some fought battles which still remain to be won or raised questions that are still unresolved. These are their stories."

Abstract: "This book presents the core ideas of early sociologist Gabriel Tarde and suggests a new pathway for sociology based on his foundational work. Rejecting anthropocentrism, Tarde highlights the contrast between the natural and the artificial, uniquely emphasizing the positive significance of the artificial in an age in which people have come to distrust it profoundly. Recovering Tarde's theory today in the context of contemporary as well as classical scholarship, recognizing how it fits with such phenomena as quantum physics and digital media, this book develops the concept of the cosmological imagination as the context for a critical Tardian analysis of artifice that can bring together what we know about our contemporary future-oriented global societies. How we know the universe, our place in it, the place of other animals and objects in it, our global socialities, our human claims of power and privilege within it, are pointed questions Tarde asks as he wonders whether a future temporality conducive to constant artifice has become our normal human way of life. Considering our ambivalence about modern products and modernity in general, our thinking about the future and our tendency to forget what nature used to signify in its presentation of problems beyond our control, such as illnesses and epidemics, Gabriel Tarde: The Future of the Artificial demonstrates the reasons for which we need to return to Tarde's work rediscover its relevance for public debate, as we seek to think through the new era and its societies in which culture and nature are no longer distinct. This book will appeal to scholars of social and political theory with interests in our digital age, new sociologies of materials and objects, neomonadology, and the thought of Gabriel Tarde"

Abstract: "Women in Jazz: Musicality, Femininity, Marginalization examines the invisible discrimination against female musicians in the French jazz world and the ways women thrive as professionals despite such conditions. The author shines a light on the paradox for women in jazz: to express oneself in a "feminine" way is to be denigrated for it, yet to behave in a "masculine" manner is to be devalued for a lack of femininity. This masculine world ensures it is more difficult for women to be recognized as jazz musicians than it is for men-even when musicians, critics, and audiences are ideologically opposed to discrimination. Female singers are confined by the feminine stereotypes of their profession, while female instrumentalists must comport themselves into traditionally masculine roles. The author explores the academic and professional socializations of these musicians, the musical choice they make, and how they are perceived by jazz professionals as a result. First published in French by CNRS Editions in 2007 (and later reissued in paperback in 2018, with the author's postscript that "nothing much has changed"), Women in Jazz: Musicality, Femininity, Marginalization expands the conversation beyond the French border, identifying female jazz musicians as a discriminated minority all around the world"--

Abstract: "One hundred years of feminist activism, from the 1880s to the 1980s, presented multiple paths for women's search for equality, autonomy, and dignity. Women fashioned different dreams of freedom and social transformation, yet what is Canadian feminism? Demanding Equality illustrates feminist thought and organizing from mid-nineteenth-century, Enlightenment-inspired writing to the multi-issue movement of the 1980s, with its focus on feminism as a collective project of resistance. Instead of equating feminism solely with women's search for individual independence and equality with men, Joan Sangster argues that the pursuit of different pathways to equality often created a hybrid politics in which emancipation was intertwined with, and propelled by, struggles against related injustices such as racism, war, colonialism, economic disparity, or homophobia. She also challenges the popular "wave" theory that identifies successive surges of equality seeking, concluding that feminist activism was continuous despite changing significantly across decades. Demanding Equality presents a picture of a heterogeneous movement characterized by both alliances and fierce internal debates. This comprehensive rear-view look at feminism in all its political guises encourages a wider public conversation about what Canadian feminism has been, is, and should be."--

Abstract: "'Did you ever go to bed and wonder if your child was getting enough to eat?' For food insecure mothers, the worry is constant, and babies are at risk of going hungry. Through compelling interviews, Lesley Frank answers the breastfeeding paradox: why women who can least afford to buy infant formula are less likely to breastfeed. She reveals that what and how infants are fed is linked to the social and economic status of those who feed them. She exposes the reality of food insecurity for formula-fed babies, the constraints limiting mothers' ability to breastfeed, and the lengths to which mothers must go to provide for their children. In a country that leaves the problem of food insecurity to charities, public policies are failing to support the most vulnerable populations. Out of Milk calls out the pressing need to establish the economic and social conditions necessary for successful breastfeeding and for accessible and safe formula feeding for families everywhere."--

Abstract: "Social movements across North America have suffered from the rise of neoliberalism. Feminism in particular has not been able to call itself a structured movement since the 1990s with the end of National Action Committee on the Status of Women. Instead, feminism and other social movements have survived in a grassroots, disjointed manner. While the work of transition houses and crisis centres, student movements and gender studies departments, Indigenous woman-led land defence, BIPOC anti-racist organizing, social media campaigns and much more continues to claim and develop feminism, as a social movement feminism lacks purposeful structure. As a result, feminism has become prey to individualism and outsourced to digital platforms that seek to make money off harassment and acrimonious debates. Feminist identity and political demands are more and more in vogue, so much so that it seems that everything can be called feminist: from anti-abortion activists to the Prime Minister of Canada. This book argues that liberal, individualized feminism can be made accountable through a formal movement structure to bring sense and practice to ongoing feminist thought and action; this kind of formal movement structure plays a critical role not just in creating social change, but also in building leadership, feminist practice, innovation and debate."--

Abstract: "An anthology of writing addressing the most urgent issues facing the Black community in Canada. The killing of Trayvon Martin in 2012 by a white assailant inspired the Black Lives Matter movement, which quickly spread outside the borders of the United States. The movement's message found fertile ground in Canada, where Black activists speak of generations of injustice and continue the work of the Black liberators who have come before them. Until We Are Free contains some of the very best African-Canadian writing on the hottest issues facing the Black community in Canada. It describes the latest developments in Canadian Black activism, organizing efforts through the use of social media, Black-Indigenous alliances, and more. Rodney Diverlus is a Port-au-Prince-born, Toronto-based dance artist, curator, and co-founder of Black Lives Matter Toronto. Abstract: "Life in Canada is marked, celebrated, enjoyed, and dreaded in ways that respond very specifically to the seasons. Sociological thinking allows people to ask questions about things that are otherwise just taken-for-granted. Thinking about the seasons sociologically opens up a unique perspective for studying and understanding social life. Each chapter in this book approaches the seasons and the passage of time as a way in which to explore issues of sociological interest. The authors use seasonality as a device that can bridge, in fascinating ways, small-scale interpersonal interactions and large formal institutional structures. The contemporary, Canadian studies in this book are wide-ranging and include analyses of: pumpkin-spice lattes, policing in schools, law and colonialism, summer cottages, seasonal-affective disorder, new year's resolutions, and Vaisakhi celebrations, to name a few. Seasonal Sociology offers provocative, new ways for thinking about the nature our collective lives"--

Abstract: Lesbian web series narrate female-centered stories, strengthen identity construction, and generate transnational communities beyond cultural barriers. Julia Obermayr explores the first definition of a new format, the first representations of lesbian women in US-American, Canadian, and Spanish web series from 2007 and onward, as well as their reciprocal effects regarding identity construction and community building of their transnational, mainly female, audience. The analyzed corpus comprises scenes taken from Venice the Series (2009) and its backstory »Otalia« on the soap opera Guiding Light (1952-2009), Seeking Simone (2009), Out With Dad (2010), Féminin/ Féminin (2014), Chica Busca Chica (2007) and its cinematic sequel De Chica En Chica (2015), as well as Notas Aparte (2016)
Abstract: Biographical note: Julia Obermayr (Dr. phil.), born in 1981, did her doctorate at the University of Graz and in LGBT+ archives in Los Angeles, Toronto, Montreal, Madrid, and Barcelona. She specializes in cultural studies, lesbian/LGBT studies and diversity, minority identities, and female representations in audiovisual media, mainly in Romance speaking Europe and the Americas

Abstract: This book examines the suicide crisis in the French workplace and asks why work or conditions of work increasingly push some employees to take their own lives. To address this question, the book analyses a corpus of testimonial material linked to 66 suicide cases across three large French companies during the period from 2005 to 2015. The book investigates what these suicide voices tell us about the present economic order and its impact on human labour within the contemporary juncture of finance-driven neoliberalism

Abstract: "In Refuge beyond Reach, David Scott FitzGerald traces the origin and development of the practices deployed by governments to deter asylum seekers from the 1970s to the present. FitzGerald draws on official government documents, information obtained via WikiLeaks and FOIA requests from the CIA, and interviews with asylum seekers to systematically analyze the policies associated with the remote control of asylum seekers. He shows how the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia comply with the letter of law while violating the spirit of those laws through a range of remote control practices: the dome, the moat, the buffer, the cage, and the barbican. Remote control flourishes in secrecy behind the closed doors of consulates and airport terminals and in the anonymity of the seas and remote border regions. These policies may violate law, but Fitzgerald identifies some pressure points. Bilateral relationships, an autonomous judiciary enforcing rights, and oversight by transnational civil society watchdogs can temper the worst abuses"--

Abstract: "This edited collection offers a broad reinterpretation of the origins of Canada. Drawing on cutting-edge research in a number of fields, Violence, Order, and Unrest explores the development of British North America from the mid-eighteenth century through the aftermath of Confederation. The chapters cover an ambitious range of topics, from Indigenous culture to municipal politics, public executions to runaway slave advertisements. Cumulatively, this book examines the diversity of Indigenous and colonial experiences across northern North America and provides fresh perspectives on the crucial roles of violence and unrest in attempts to establish British authority in Indigenous territories. Drawing on specific case studies of law and state formation in English and French Canada, Violence, Order, and Unrest considers patterns of settler colonialism across the century before Confederation. The result is a collection that brings together innovative research in different fields to reconsider the ideology, governance, and political culture that underpinned British North America. In the aftermath of Canada 150, Violence, Order, and Unrest offers a timely contribution to current debates over the nature of Canadian culture and history. It demonstrates that we cannot understand Canada today without considering its origins as a colonial project."--

Abstract: "Why do some governments try to limit immigrants' access to social benefits and entitlements while others do not? Through an in-depth study of Sweden, Canada, and the Netherlands, Immigration and the Politics of Welfare Exclusion maps the politics of immigrants' social rights in Western democracies. To achieve this goal, Edward A. Koning analyzes policy documents, public opinion surveys, data on welfare use, parliamentary debates, and interviews with politicians and key players in the three countries. Koning's findings are three-fold. First, the politics of immigrant welfare exclusion have little to do with economic factors and are more about general opposition to immigration and multiculturalism. Second, proposals for exclusion are particularly likely to arise in a political climate that incentivizes politicians to appear "tough" on immigration. Finally, the success of anti-immigrant politicians in bringing about exclusionary reforms depends on the response of the political mainstream, and the extent to which immigrants' rights are protected in national and international legal frameworks. A timely investigation into an increasingly pressing subject, Immigration and the Politics of Welfare Exclusion will be essential reading for scholars and students of political science, comparative politics, and immigration studies."--

Abstract: In 'Picasso's Demoiselles', eminent art historian Suzanne Preston Blier uncovers the previously unknown history of Pablo Picasso's 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon', one of the twentieth century's most important, celebrated, and studied paintings. Drawing on her expertise in African art and newly discovered sources, Blier reads the painting not as a simple bordello scene but as Picasso's interpretation of the diversity of representations of women from around the world that he encountered in photographs and sculptures. These representations are central to understanding the painting's creation and help identify the demoiselles as global figures, mothers, grandmothers, lovers, and sisters, as well as part of the colonial world Picasso inhabited. Simply put, Blier fundamentally transforms what we know about this revolutionary and iconic work

Abstract: "Bringing together a multidisciplinary group of experts from the fields of labour studies, public health, ergonomics, epidemiology, sociology and law, Sick and tired examines the inequalities in workplace health and safety. Using an anti-oppressive framework, chapters interrogate a wide range of issues, including links between precarious employment and mental health, the inverse relationship between power and occupational health through the experiences of women, immigrants and older workers, and the need for creative strategies that promote health and safety in ways that support empowerment and equity."--

Abstract: "Daughters of 1968 is the story of French feminism between 1944 and 1981, when feminism played a central political role in the history of France. The key women during this epoch were often leftists committed to a materialist critique of society and were part of a postwar tradition that produced widespread social change, revamping the workplace and laws governing everything from abortion to marriage. The May 1968 events--with their embrace of radical individualism and anti-authoritarianism--triggered a break from the past, and the women's movement split into two strands. One became individualist and intensely activist, the other particularist and less activist, distancing itself from contemporary feminism. This theoretical debate manifested itself in battles between women and organizations on the streets and in the courts. The history of French feminism is the history of women's claims to individualism and citizenship that had been granted their male counterparts, at least in principle, in 1789. The few exceptions, such as Simone de Beauvoir or the 1970s activists, demonstrate the diversity and tensions within French feminism, as France moved from a corporatist and tradition-minded country to one marked by individualism and modernity."--Page 4 of cover

Abstract: Crosscutting audience research with contemporary thinking on sexuality in transnational contexts, this book analyses how French LGBTQ films are seen in Spain and Spanish ones in France. With a particular focus on festivals, the book studies the reception of films across four languages (Spanish, French, Catalan and English) and engages with participants from a range of digital and physical audience locations. It also focuses on films that chronicle the local (in portraying national and sub-national identities) and draws on the regional-global (translating foreign models of non-heterosexual experience)

Abstract: "Europe Un-Imagined examines one of the world's first and only trans nationally produced television channels, Association relative à la télévision européenne (ARTE). ARTE calls itself the "European culture channel" and was launched in 1991 with a French-German intergovernmental mandate to produce television and other media that promoted pan-European community and culture. Damien Stankiewicz's ground-breaking ethnographic study of the various contexts of media production work at ARTE (the newsroom, the editing studio, the screening room), reveals how ideas about French, German, and European culture coalesce and circulate at the channel. He argues that the reproduction of nationalism often goes unacknowledged and unremarked upon, and questions whether something like a European "imagination" can be produced. Stankiewicz describes the challenges that ARTE staff face, including rapidly changing media technologies and audiences, unreflective national stereotyping, and unwieldy bureaucratic infrastructure, which ultimately limit the channel's abilities to cultivate a transnational, "European" public. Europe Un-Imagined challenges its readers to find new ways of thinking about how people belong in the world beyond the problematic logics of national categorization."--

Abstract: "Policing Black Bodies is a timely and much-needed exposure of historical and contemporary practices of state-sanctioned violence against Black lives in Canada. This groundbreaking work dispels many prevailing myths that cast Canada as a land of benevolence and racial equality, and uncovers long-standing state practices that have restricted Black freedom. A first of its kind, Policing Black Bodies creates a framework that makes legible how anti-Blackness has influenced the construction of Canada's carceral landscape, including the development and application of numerous criminal law enforcement and border regulation practices. The book traces the historical and contemporary mobilization of anti-Blackness spanning from slavery, 19th and 20th century segregation practices, and the application of early drug and prostitution laws through to the modern era. Maynard makes visible the ongoing legacy of a demonized and devalued Blackness that is manifest today as racial profiling by police, immigration agents and social services, the over-representation of Black communities in jails and prisons, anti-Black immigration detention and deportation practices, the over-representation of Black youth in state care, the school-to-prison pipeline and gross economic inequality. Following the dictums of the Black Lives Matter movement, Policing Black Bodies adopts an intersectional lens that explores the realities of those whose lives and experiences have historically been marginalized, stigmatized, and made invisible. In addressing how state practices have impacted Black lives, the book brings from margin to centre an analysis of gender, class, sexuality, (dis)ability, citizenship and criminalization. Beyond exploring systemic racial injustice, Policing Black Bodies pushes the limits of the Black radical imagination: it delves into liberatory Black futures and urges the necessity of transformative alternatives."--

Abstract: The 9/11 terror attacks and the ensuing War on Terror have profoundly impacted Muslim communities across North America. Islamophobia: 'Understanding Anti-Muslim Racism through the Lived Experiences of Muslim Youth' is a timely exploration of the experiences of young Canadian Muslims and the challenges they have encountered since 9/11. Through framing anti-Muslim racism, or 'Islamophobia,' from a critical race perspective, Naved Bakali theorizes how racist treatment of Muslims in public and political spheres has been mediated through the War on Terror. Furthermore, he examines the lived experiences of Muslim youth as they navigate issues relating to race, gender, identity, and politics in their schools and broader society. This book uncovers systemic bias and racism experienced by Muslim youth in a climate that is increasingly becoming hostile towards Muslims. Ultimately, the findings detailed in this work suggest that anti-Muslim racism in the post-9/11 era is inextricably linked to the effects of the War on Terror in the North American context. Moreover, Islamophobia is also impacted by localized practices, policies, and nationalist debates. This book is a unique contribution to the field of anti-racism education as it examines systemic and institutionalized racism towards Muslims in Canadian secondary schools in the context of the War on Terror

Abstract: A sociologist gains unprecedented access to Canadian immigration offices and reveals how visa officers determine who gets in to Canada - and who stays out. Every year, over 1.3 million people apply to visit, work, or settle in Canada and discover that their future rests in visa officers' hands. How do these officers decide who gets in? Seeking answers to this question, Vic Satzewich gained access to eleven overseas visa offices, revealing immigration officers in action as they determine credibility and risk. Contrary to popular opinion, individual bias rarely enters into their decisions. Instead, a combination of experience, organizational culture, and accumulated local knowledge shapes their decision to issue a visa or dig deeper into some people's stories and histories

Abstract: In the frozen steppes of the Altay, a Franco-Mongolian archeological expedition prepares to excavate the tomb of an Eastern Scythian warrior, 2 300 years old. Their ritual practice of deep burial of the dead, in combination with extreme climatic conditions, may mean that these scientists will discover the last frozen tombs on the planet, and will elucidate the mysteries surrounding this Scythian horseman. Who was he? How did he live? How did he die? This investigation will enable new light to be shed on this forgotten civilization. Alongside the excavations, a family of Kazakh nomads have set up their summer camp, attracted by the unusual activity. Striking similarities appear between the lifestyles and practices of these Kazakhs and the Eastern Scythians, two millennia apart in time. Intertwined with the archeological research is thus a fascinating ethno-archeological study, of one of the last peoples still isolated from modernity, and their possible very ancient ancestors. But for the Kazakhs too, the question arises - how long will they survive in their isolation?

Abstract: A people who lived on the brink of the abyss and buried their dead on sheer cliffs, defying all logic ... the Chachapoya culture flourished between 800 and 1500 AD in northern Peru, at an altitude of more than 3,000 meters. No one knows for sure whether the Chachapoyas came out of the jungles or the mountains, but they settled in a place that seems impossibly difficult to live in: the mountainous fringes of the Peruvian jungle. An Explora Films team made up of specialists in high-risk film shoots, speleologists, mountain rescue experts, and archaeologists has reached the depths of Chachapoya territory to study their habits and customs. This group of specialists has explored the funerary 'chulpas,' or tombs, located on the sheer walls of the region's towering cliffs. The unimaginable constructions, enigmatic paintings and rock carvings, mummies that appear to communicate encrypted messages, and mysterious sarcophagi perched on rocky ledges have been examined by the archaeologists on the expedition. Looking for answers, this documentary shines a light on many of the unexplained mysteries hidden in the mountains and canyons of the Chachapoyas.

Abstract: "Racially mixed people in the global north are often portrayed as the embodiment of an optimistic, post-racial future. In Mixed Race Amnesia, Minelle Mahtani makes the case that this romanticized view of multiraciality governs both public perceptions and personal accounts of the mixed-race experience. Drawing on a series of interviews with mixed-race women, she explores how, in order to adopt the view that being mixed race is progressive, a strategic forgetting takes place -- one that obliterates complex diasporic histories. She argues that a new anti-colonial approach to multiraciality is needed, one that emphasizes how colonialism shapes the experiences of mixed-race people today."--Page 4 of cover

Abstract: This documentary will take us to one of the most hostile habitats of the planet: the grand Sahara desert. The Tuaregs are also known as the 'Blue Men' due to the colour adopted by their skin, soaked by the indigo used to dye their veils. They have always been feudal lords who dominated this immense territory. They assaulted caravans and controlled the routes. Travelers always feared them for their fierceness and ferocity. They are untamed people, impossible to subjugate. Their strict rules, where honour and hospitality are among the main ones, determine the life of their different tribes. We will travel next to the Madugu, who lead their salt caravans through the Tenere, a desert within a desert, also known as the 'Anvil of the Sun'. We will know their customs, their beliefs and their way of life and we will discovery the challenges they face today to continue living as they have always done: with no borders or governments.

Whether this involves rituals or mastery of techniques, handing down customs is a way of reinforcing the identity and singularity of a group of individuals in keeping with their lifestyle and their environment. Through the discovery of some exceptional locations, Alexandre Mostras leads us on an encounter with the last guardians of a unique heritage. In a first-person travelogue, he recounts the simple tale of a community and the importance of inter-generational transmission that plays a direct role in the survival of its culture. Abstract: In the depths of the Cambodian forest lies the ruin of Angkor. It was once the center of a powerful civilization from the 9th to the 14th century. This is the story of the rehabilitation of this archaeological treasure, throughout the chaotic modern history of Cambodia. It all started in the 19th century when Cambodia became a French protectorate. Ever since, numerous French archaeologists have devoted their lives to the reconstruction of Angkor, while trying to unveil the secrets of the Khmer culture. This scientific work of passion was accomplished against a backdrop of turmoil and war the Cambodian people had to face.

Abstract: This episode follows the birth of civilization in Anatolia and the Middle East. We go back to the very beginnings, when hunter-gatherers pause in Gobekli Tepe and start to build the world's first structures around 12,000 years ago. We follow the first stages of civilization: the rise of agriculture, governance and writing in Mesopotamia. We visit ancient Babylon (Iraq) and Mari (Syria) to explore the world's earliest cities. The latter part of the episode explores Alexander's arrival in Troy and his conquest of the Persian Empire - a journey that made him realise what he owed to the East. In Miletus remarkable new finds show that the Greek god Aphrodite began as the eastern god Ishtar.

Abstract: At the time of Elizabeth I, the greatest power in the world was not England, France or Florence, it was the Ottoman Empire - one of the world's first truly global and multicultural Empires. The film follows the rise of the Ottomans in the Anatolian city of Bursa and tells the dramatic story of how they conquered Byzantium and transformed Istanbul. The great Topkapı Palace of Istanbul is the stage on which we describe the growth of the Ottoman Empire and hear of the unprecedented developments in science and the arts ushered in by the rule of enlightened Sultans.

Abstract: In this episode we reveal how a golden age of invention and scholarship thrived in the Islamic World at a time when Europe lingered in the dark age. We see how Muslim scholars brought together for the first time the ideas of the Greeks and Romans with Persian and Indian mathematics and astronomy, and developed them into the beginnings of modern Science. We reveal the first contacts by which European scholars discovered this treasury of knowledge and how it was developed by generations of Arab-admirers (including Galileo & Copernicus) into modern science. This episode focuses on the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, the great university mosques of Cairo and uncovers ancient documents translated in Baghdad by Islamic scholars, now in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.

Abstract: In the summer of 1931, a mysterious man appeared seemingly out of nowhere in the Canadian Arctic. After purchasing supplies in a local village he disappeared into the desolate landscape and spent the rest of the short summer building a cabin and preparing for winter. Six months later, local Aboriginals reported to the RCMP that they believed the mysterious Trapper was vandalizing their trap lines. Several officers were dispatched to the Trapper’s cabin to question him about the complaint. In an attempt to talk to the Trapper one officer knocked on the cabin door and was shot without warning. Despite severe blood loss the wounded officer survived his injury. One week later a posse of eight RCMP constables returned to the Trapper’s cabin intent on taking him into custody. Despite repeated attempts to dislodge the outlaw using gunfire and dynamite the posse was forced to retreat. The Trapper then fled with little more than the clothes on his back in an effort to elude a posse of more than forty men now pursuing him. For more than six weeks the RCMP chased the Trapper before finally killing the outlaw in violent gun battle on the frozen Eagle River. When the 'Arctic War' was over the Trapper had killed one RCMP officer and wounded two others. Although fingerprints and dental records were taken of the dead fugitive his identity was never determined. In the summer of 2007 a team of world-class forensic experts traveled to the Trapper’s gravesite in the small village of Aklavik located in Canada's Northwest Territories. After exhuming the body the team recovers tissue, isotope and DNA samples they hope will help unlock the identity of the mysterious Arctic fugitive known as the 'Mad Trapper.'

Abstract: In the red desert of Southern Algeria, the younger generations are taught to carry on the millennium-old tradition of the foggaras, used to capture the desert water to irrigate an entire oasis and its palm groves. The foggara is considered the backbone of Saharan agriculture, and in particular oasis agriculture. However, the development of that agriculture is threatened by the arrival of modern irrigation systems that consume high levels of energy and are not protective of the environment.

Abstract: All around the world, mankind perpetuates traditions, passing down skills and a way of life to future generations. A photographer by training, the director captures the stunning beauty of the landscapes and offers us an almost dreamlike journey, in which he artfully illustrates the great fragility of our cultural heritage.

A photographer by training, the director captures the stunning beauty of the landscapes and offers us an almost dreamlike journey, in which he artfully illustrates the great fragility of our cultural heritage.

Abstract: This episode looks at the wider Ottoman world, taking in superb merchants' houses in Birgi (Anatolia) and Damascus. At the edge of empire, on the Persian border near Mt Ararat, we discover how the Ottoman's controlled the extremities of Empire at Ishak Pasha's magnificent palace. The program then explores the growing European fascination with 'The Orient' throughout the 19th century, both as a place of culture and also as a trading partner and market for mass produced western goods. We end by tracing the decline of the Ottoman Empire in the dying days of the 19th century, a time when the Sultans still managed to achieve great feats, including the building of the great Hejaz Railway across the Arabian desert.

Abstract: Today one god is worshipped by two thirds of humanity. It is the culmination of an extraordinary story by which a single deity emerged from a pantheon of thousands in the crucible of religious ideas that was the ancient Middle East. In this episode we trace the birth, development and explosion of the religion of Abraham and Moses, from its very beginnings in Judaism to its triumph as Christianity within the Roman Empire. We also look at the earliest form of monotheism, as devised by Akhenaten in ancient Egypt.

First the Seljuk Turks took on the Byzantines, pushing their way into Anatolia. In a cave in Cappadocia we discover a long lost painting that reveals how the two cultures co-existed. We follow the Mongol invasions - in Bukhara we explore its destruction and in Esfahan, Iran we see how the Mongols eventually converted to Islam and began to settle. Then in Uzbekistan again the episode traces the rise of Timur and explores the glories of Samarkand. Finally we follow the successors of Timur as they spread south into India, creating the wonders of the Mughal Empire.

Abstract: Phil Agland revisits the Baka Pygmy family he filmed 25 years ago in his BAFTA award winning documentary 'Baka: People of the Rainforest'. An extraordinary journey into the heart of the rainforest in Cameroon, where the past of the Baka revisits them through watching the old film projected in the forest - raising questions about their old life in the forest and what is happening to them now. One generation later, the children of the old film are now parents. Camera, who was born at the end of the first film and named after Phil's film camera, now has a gorgeous seven year old daughter, Ambi. Camera's brother Ali, who wanted his baby sister thrown away in the original film, also has a young daughter, but tragically she is disabled. Watching themselves for the first time on film, seeing how their parents used to live, prompts laughter, amazement and a profound sense of loss. Leading ultimately to an epic journey deep into the forest to rediscover the old life of their fathers, and a quest to find the magical 'Elephant's Mirror', an almost mythical place where, their fathers had told them, the elephants go to admire their tusks. This is a tragic story of alcohol addiction, and the death of little children, of a family caught helplessly between the world of the forest and the outside world that rejects them. But it is also a story of redemption inspired by the old film and a lifeline to the future offered by the children, especially Camera's daughter, Ambi, who attends school for the first time.

Abstract: There are places on earth where people live together in harmony, each practicing a different religion. There are places in the world where food is still hunted and gathered without modern influence. There are islands and whole civilisations unchanged by industry, economics, religion or even science- life has been the same in these places for centuries. 'Unusual Cultures' is a fascinating look at people and their practises and the significance they play in day to day life. We explore culture from times of earliest civilisations to the present day.

Abstract: Many years before the arrival of the Negro Bantus around the year 1000 BC, in the deepest of the equatorial jungles, the first dwellers of the African continent live: the Pigmies. They were always jungle nomads. They know no other world than jungle. They are one of the long-lived people in the world thanks to the pharmacopeia of the jungle. Today, around 5000 Pigmies still live like thousand of years ago, and their world is at risk due to the indiscriminate logging.
