    Abstract: "It is widely accepted that political discourse in recent years has become more openly racist and more filled with wildly implausible conspiracy theories. Dogwhistles and Figleaves explores certain ways in which such changes - both of which defied previously settled norms of political speech - have been brought about. Jennifer Saul shows that two linguistic devices, dogwhistles and figleaves, have played a crucial role. Some dogwhistles (such as "88," used by Nazis online to mean "Heil Hitler") serve to disguise messages that would otherwise be rejected as unacceptable, allowing them to be transmitted surreptitiously. Other dogwhistles (like the 1988 "Willie Horton" ad) work by influencing people in ways that they are not aware of, and which they would likely reject were they aware. Figleaves (such as "just asking questions") take messages that could easily be recognized as unacceptable, and provide just enough cover that people become more willing to accept them. Importantly, these work against the background of a divided public. They are particularly effective in influencing people who are conflicted yet malleable--those who don't want to be racist, for example, but are willing to be convinced that something which seems racist really isn't. Saul shows how these dogwhistles and figleaves have both exploited and widened existing divisions in society, and normalized racist and conspiracist speech."

    Abstract: Since Pierre Bourdieu, we have known that the body forms incorporated cultural and social capital. It is a commodity and means of production, a sign of belonging to a social class, a place where sex, gender and power relations are negotiated or a pretext for social exclusions and racism. The body is the object of punishments, sanctions and social control, a support for affects, obsessions and illnesses as well as a site of rebellion and resistance. The 19th century novels analyzed in the contributions to this volume tell all this.     Abstract: "By the start of the nineteenth century, the impact of the geological sciences and advancements in the field had radically expanded people's perception of the Earth's age. In How the Earth Feels, Dana Luciano maps the emergence of a "geological fantasy," in which increased knowledge of planetary life was used to racialize Native peoples as fossils and curiosities. Further, the geological fantasy served to cement the notion that the Earth had been preparing for the presence of humans, and that humans were in fact the ultimate expression of the Earth's teleological development in a both scientific and spiritual sense. Counterposing a range of texts-from early European and US geological texts to Indigenous accounts of earthquakes to African American men's anti-slavery writing featuring geological tropes-Luciano reveals the workings of the geological fantasy as it operated across the racial and biopolitical discourses of the nineteenth-century United States. Luciano offers a rich and historically nuanced account of how imagined relations with the non-human world have long served as a means of avoiding engagement with the dynamics of racial and colonial power"

    Abstract: This open access book examines how the form of the list features as a tool for meaning-making in the genre of detective fiction from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century. The book analyzes how both readers and detectives rely on listing as an ordering and structuring tool, and highlights the crucial role that lists assume in the reading process. It extends the boundaries of an emerging field dedicated to the study of lists in literature and caters to a newly revived interest in form and New Formalist approaches in narratological research. The central aim of this book is to show how detective fiction makes use of lists in order to frame various conceptions of knowledge. The frames created by these lists are crucial to decoding the texts, and they can be used to demonstrate how readers can be engaged in the act of detection or manipulated into accepting certain propositions in the text.     Abstract: Inclusive Shakespeares: Identity, Pedagogy, Performance responds to the growing concern to make Shakespeare Studies inclusive of prospective students, teachers, performers, and audiences who have occupied a historically marginalized position in relation to Shakespeare's poetry and plays. This timely collection includes essays by leading and emerging scholarly voices concerned to open interest and participation in Shakespeare to wider appreciation and use. The essays discuss topics ranging from ethically-informed pedagogy to discussions of public partnerships, from accessible theater for people with disabilities to the use of Shakespeare in technical and community colleges. Inclusive Shakespeares contributes to national conversations about the role of literature in the larger project of inclusion, using Shakespeare Studies as the medium to critically examine interactions between personal identity and academia at large. Sonya Freeman Loftis (co-editor) is Chair of English and Professor of English at Morehouse College, USA, where she specializes in Renaissance literature and disability studies. She is the author of Shakespeare and Disability Studies (2021), Imagining Autism (2015), and Shakespeare's Surrogates (2013), as well as the co-editor of Shakespeare's Hamlet in an Era of Textual Exhaustion (2017). She currently serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Literary and Cultural Disability Studies, Disability Studies Quarterly, Review of Disability Studies, and Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture. Mardy Philippian (co-editor) is Associate Professor of English Studies, former Associate Dean for the College of Humanities, Fine Arts, and Communication, and Director of the Literature and Language concentration at Lewis University, USA, where he teaches courses in Shakespeare, Milton, and early modern English literature. Since 2011, he has served as a member of the editorial board of The Oswald Review: International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Criticism in the Discipline of English.     Abstract: This monograph provides the first sustained, chronological account of Northern Irish police officers’ representation in theatre. Importantly, its scope comprises a critical period of national and organisational development, beginning with the Partition of Ireland in 1921 and the founding of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) one year later in 1922. It progresses through the relevant theatrical and historical events of the century, through the period after the RUC’s dissolution and replacement with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) in 2001, and concludes in 2021 to coincide with the centenary of Partition. As such, this project is distinctive in its ability to trace paradigm shifts in perceptions of the police over time, as they intersect with relevant historical events and milestones of political conflict in the province. T. W. Saunders received his PhD from the Queen’s University of Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 2018. He then travelled extensively—to locations including Cyprus, Spain, Chile, Canada, Gibraltar, and the Falkland Islands—while adapting his dissertation into a scholarly monograph and working on various other adjacent projects. He lives in Colorado.

Stéphane Hardys kulturhistorische, lexikologische und soziolinguistische Darstellung des largonji du louchébem gewährt exklusive Einblicke in die verborgene Welt einer ganz besonderen Sprechergruppe. Der fast ausschließlich in der gesprochenen Form verwendete louchébem ist eine „verhüllende Sondersprache“. Für Außenstehende ist er nicht verständlich und soll es auch nicht sein. In der Fachliteratur galt der louchébem als nahezu ausgestorben. So hat diese Thematik in der (franko-)romanistischen Sprachwissenschaft bisher nur wenig Beachtung gefunden. Doch der largonji du louchébem ist sehr lebendig. Das weist die Autorin mit ihrer qualitativ-empirischen Studie auf der Basis umfangreichen authentischen Gesprächsmaterials nach.

    Abstract: This Open access book is a collection of essays and offers an in-depth analysis of silence as an aesthetic practice and a textual strategy which paradoxically speaks of the unspoken nature of many inconvenient hidden truths of Irish society in the work of contemporary fiction writers. The study acknowledges Ireland’s history of damaging silences and considers its legacies, but it also underscores how silence can serve as a valuable, even productive, means of expression. From a wide range of critical perspectives, the individual essays address, among other issues, the conspiracies of silence in Catholic Ireland, the silenced structural oppression of Celtic Tiger Ireland, the recovery of silenced stories/voices of the past and their examination in the present, as well as millennial disaffection and the silencing of vulnerability in today’s neoliberal Ireland. The book ’s attention to silence provides a rich vocabulary for understanding what unfolds in the quiet interstices of Irish writing from recent decades. This study also invokes the past to understand the present and, thus, demonstrates the continuities and discontinuities that define how silence operates in Irish culture. How did the interests of the LGBT movement and the state converge to transform mainstream political and legal norms in these areas?Using civil rights narratives, pop culture, and critical theory, LGBT Inclusion in American Life tells the story of how exclusion was transformed into inclusion in US politics and society, as pop culture changed mainstream Americans thinking about "non-gay" issues, namely privacy, sex and gender norms, and family. Susan Burgess explores films such as Casablanca, various James Bond movies, and Julie and Julia, and television shows such as thirtysomething and The Americans, as well as the Broadway sensation Hamilton, as sources of growing popular support for LGBT rights. By drawing on popular culture as a rich source of public understanding, Burgess explains how the greater public came to accept and even support the three central pillars of LGBT freedoms in the post-World War II era: to have consensual adult sex without fear of criminal penalty, to serve openly in the military, and to marry legally. LGBT Inclusion in American Life argues that pop culture can help us to imagine unknown futures that lead beyond what we currently desire from contemporary politics, and in return asks now that the mainstream public has come to accept LGBT freedoms, where might the popular imagination be headed in the future?

    Abstract: This book is an in depth, extensive study of Romanian queer cultural products and brings an essential and very needed contribution to the literature on Central and SEE gender studies, post-communism studies, media, and cultural studies, while at the same time being very relevant for transnational queer studies.The book looks at Romanian queer culture ”from inside”, and also from the acknowledgment that the research process is guided by the sensitivity of the approached topics, by the lack of archival footprints, and by a solid dose of media archaeology, especially when looking at the beginning of Romanian LGBT+ activism in the 90s. The book starts from contemporary Romanian cultural products that are either focusing on queer topics or (and sometimes both) produced by queer creators. It looks back at the memories of seminal queer and trans activists in extensive interviews conducted for this volume, and fragmented literary and media sources that cover the most part of the 20th century. Ramona Dima is a researcher in queer and gender studies with focus on South East Europe. Her publications and topics of interests include queer culture, sexuality and migration, LGBT+ activism, and anti-gender politics. She is the recipient of a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship hosted by the Centre for Gender Studies, University of Stavanger (2021-2023). Dr. Dima holds a PhD from the University of Bucharest and is the initiator and co-organiser of Queer and Feminist Studies in Southeastern Europe International Conference.

    Abstract: Studying the dialogue between literature and philosophy in the Spanish exile in Latin America requires a historiographical effort, since the exile is framed in a historical before and after: in the "before" of its traditional context, that of the ideas belonging to the place of origin prior to exile. These ideas, capable of developing or changing in the "after" of the post-exile world (in this case, the Spanish-American world), give life to the poetic and philosophical works gestated in the land where the exiles found the protection and shelter of a new homeland: Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela. This book offers interdisciplinary elements to map the paths in which a group of authors whose life and work was marked, directly or indirectly, by the experience of exile cross: Max Aub, Luis Cernuda, José Gaos, Manuel García Morente, Juan Larrea , Eduardo Nicol, Alfonso Reyes, Josep Solanes and María Zambrano. The texts thematize the work, context, and influences of writers, poets, and philosophers who arrived in Latin America fleeing political persecution and the Civil War in Spain. Many of the exiles saw in the nation that welcomed them the opportunity for a new beginning, others, on the other hand, the place of eternal nostalgia and permanent mourning for their lost home. In all cases, this circumstance was reflected in the work of the exile authors discussed here, in their efforts to reinvent literature, philosophy or the relationship between the two, as well as in their contributions to the dissemination of these two disciplines in organs cultural institutions such as educational institutions, publishing houses and magazines
    Abstract: "Estudiar el diálogo entre literatura y filosofía en el exilio español en Hispanoamérica requiere de un esfuerzo historiográfico, pues el exilio está enmarcado en un antes y un después histórico: en el "antes" de su contexto tradicional, el de las ideas pertenecientes al lugar de origen previo al destierro. Estas ideas, susceptibles de desarrollarse o cambiar en el "después" del ámbito posterior al destierro (en este caso el mundo hispanoamericano), dan vida a las obras poéticas y filosóficas gestadas en la tierra donde los desterrados encontraron la protección y el abrigo de un nuevo terruño: Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, México, Venezuela. Este libro ofrece elementos interdisciplinarios para mapear los caminos en los que se cruza un grupo de autores cuya vida y obra estuvo marcada, directa o indirectamente, por la experiencia del exilio: Max Aub, Luis Cernuda, José Gaos, Manuel García Morente, Juan Larrea, Eduardo Nicol, Alfonso Reyes, Josep Solanes y María Zambrano. Los textos tematizan la obra, contexto e influencias de literatos, poetas y filósofos que arribaron a Hispanoamérica huyendo de la persecución política y de la Guerra Civil en España.     Abstract: "Gender and the Spatiality of Blackness in Contemporary AfroFrench Narratives approaches the study of AfroEurope through narrative forms produced in contemporary France, a location which richly illustrates differentiated (although imbricated) readings of blackness in European spaces. The book adds to the existing literature by adopting a transdisciplinary approach that combines critical black and urban geographies, intersectionality, as well as social and textual analysis. The book concerns itself with the spatial negotiations of Afroeuropean woman in France, through the figure of the black fla̲neuse. Proposing 'walking as method', this critical work gets beneath spectacular representations of ghettoised banlieues, televised protests and shipwrecked migrants to explore the spatiality of blackness in the everyday. It discusses a range of narrative forms, the social context of their production, as well as the political contestations and cultural dynamics with which they engage. Such marginalized visions of freedom are here known as "minoritarian liberalism," a phrase that stands in for overlapping, alternative modes of freedom-be they queer, favela, or peasant. The book explores a wide swath of favela dwellers, some of whom are considered "queer"-such as Natasha Kellem, the author's friend and a charismatic self-declared travesti (a gender identity that signifies transition from masculine to feminine)-alongside others that are treated as "abnormal" simply because they live in favelas.     Abstract: "Having a "good" sense of humor generally means being able to take a joke without getting offended--laughing even at a taboo thought or at another's expense. The insinuation is that laughter eases social tension and creates solidarity in an overly politicized social world. But, do the stakes change when the jokes are racist? In The Souls of White Jokes Raúl Pérez argues that we must genuinely confront this unsettling question in order to fully understand the persistence of anti-black racism and white supremacy in American society today. W.E.B. Du Bois's prescient essay The Souls of White Folk was one of the first to theorize whiteness as a social and political construct based on a feeling of superiority over racialized others--a kind of racial contempt. Pérez extends this theory to the study of humor, connecting theories of racial formation to parallel ideas about humor stemming from laughter at another's misfortune. Critically synthesizing scholarship on race, humor, and emotions, he uncovers a key function of humor as a tool for producing racial alienation, dehumanization, exclusion, and even violence. Pérez tracks this use of humor from blackface minstrelsy to contemporary contexts, including police culture, politics, and far-right extremists. Rather than being harmless fun, this humor plays a central role in reinforcing and mobilizing racist ideology and power under the guise of amusement. The Souls of White Jokes exposes this malicious side of humor, while also revealing a new facet of racism today. Though it can be comforting to imagine racism as coming from racial hatred and anger, the terrifying reality is that it is tied up in seemingly benign, even joyful, everyday interactions as well-- and for racism to be eradicated we must face this truth"--
