    Kurzfassung: Die Wende von 1989 bzw. 1991 hat die Religionsgemeinschaften in den ehemals kommunistischen Staaten Südosteuropas auf die Bühne der politischen Öffentlichkeit zurückgebracht. Sie wurden aufgewertet, aber nicht unbedingt in spiritueller, sondern in institutioneller, politischer und nationaler Hinsicht. Heute, zwei Jahrzehnte nach der Wende, erheben die Religionsgemeinschaften Südosteuropas häufig den Führungsanspruch in der Gesellschaft – nicht nur in religiöser und moralischer, sondern auch in national-politischer Hinsicht. Bei ihren Versuchen, die Gesellschaft zu sakralisieren, profanisieren sie sich jedoch häufig selbst. Mit diesen Phänomenen befassen sich die in diesem Band enthaltenen Beiträge, die in Form von Referaten im Rahmen der vom 16. bis 18. September 2010 in Graz abgehaltenen Tagung «Sakralisierung des öffentlichen Raums in Südosteuropa nach der Wende 1989» präsentiert und diskutiert wurden

Die reichhaltigen Funde geben Auskunft über den Einfluss der Alten in Politik und Wissenschaft, über den Umgang mit dem körperlichen Abbau und den materiellen Bedingtheiten, aber auch über das Zusammenleben der Generationen und die Sorge um Alter und Tod. Es zeigt sich, dass auch in der Antike das Alter keine rein biologische Tatsache war, sondern durch soziale und kulturelle Faktoren geprägt wurde. Das Buch bietet mehr als eine Geschichte des Alters, es eröffnet ein Panorama alltäglichen Lebens des Einzelnen und der Gesellschaft in der Antike.

    Kurzfassung: Um das westliche Bündnis im Ost-West-Konflikt nach innen zu stabilisieren, setzten die USA auf auswärtige Kultur- und Informationspolitik. In der Bundesrepublik wandten sich etwa 20 Amerikahäuser und Deutsch-Amerikanische Institute an die westdeutsche Bevölkerung, um Sympathien für die Politik und die Werte der USA zu erzeugen. Sie waren jedoch nicht nur Mittler im amerikanischen Auftrag, sondern durch vielfältige Beziehungen fest in der westdeutschen Kulturlandschaft verankert. In der Öffentlichkeit standen sie als symbolische Orte für "Amerika" – im positiven wie im negativen Sinne. Reinhild Kreis analysiert die Strukturen, Zielvorgaben und das Instrumentarium der amerikanischen Kultur- und Informationspolitik in der Bundesrepublik, Themenkarrieren und -konjunkturen sowie die Amerikahäuser und DAI in ihren lokalen Beziehungsgefügen. An der Schnittstelle von USA und Bundesrepublik, Außen- und Kulturpolitik, Regierung und Öffentlichkeit zeigt die Untersuchung der Amerikahäuser und Deutsch-Amerikanischen Institute die Gestaltung, Dynamiken und Spannungen der transatlantischen Beziehungen seit den 1960er Jahren unterhalb der diplomatischen Ebene.

    Kurzfassung: After a period of intense work on national memory cultures, we are observing a growing interest in memory both as a social and an individual practice. Memory studies tend to focus on a particular field of memory processes, namely those connected with war, persecution and expulsion. In this sense, the memory - or rather the trauma - of the Holocaust is paradigmatic for the entire research field. The Holocaust is furthermore increasingly understood as constitutive of a global memory community which transcends national memories and mediates universal values. The present volume diverges from this perspective by dealing also with everyday subjects of memory. This allows for a more complete view of the interdependencies between public and private memory and, more specifically, public and family memory

    Kurzfassung: Wie Themen in Medien und Politik behandelt werden ist unter gesellschafts- und demokratietheoretischen Gesichtspunkten relevant, da ein sinnvoller Diskurs zwischen Bevölkerung, Medien und Politik nur dann stattfinden kann, wenn es zumindest gewisse inhaltliche Überschneidungen gibt. Hannah Schmid-Petri vergleicht Verarbeitungs-Prozesse (Framing) für Medien und Politik auf der Grundlage system- und akteurstheoretischer Annahmen, an die Erkenntnisse aus dem Bereich der Nachrichtenwerttheorie, des Agenda-Settings und des Framings angebunden werden. Die Verarbeitung eines Issues wird verstanden als die Selektion von einzelnen inhaltlichen Aspekten, die sich zu Mustern verdichten, sowie die Auswahl von Akteuren, die sich zu einem Thema äußern. Kenntnisse über die Selektion von Issues werden dabei auf die Verarbeitung übertragen („Selektion zweiter Ordnung“) und somit Nachrichtenwerttheorie und Framing-Ansatz integriert

    Kurzfassung: Recent years have witnessed an intense debate concerning the size of the population of Roman Italy. This book argues that the combined literary, epigraphic and archaeological evidence supports the theory that early-imperial Italy had about six million inhabitants. At the same time the traditional view that the last century of the Republic witnessed a decline in the free Italian population is shown to be untenable. The main foci of its six chapters are: military participation rates; demographic recovery after the Second Punic War; the spread of slavery and the background to the Gracchan land reforms; the fast expansion of Italian towns after the Social War; emigration from Italy; and the fate of the Italian population during the first 150 years of the Principate

    Kurzfassung: This book examines the social transformation wrought by the abolition of slavery in 1834 in South Africa's Cape Colony. It pays particular attention to the effects of socioeconomic and cultural changes in the way both freed slaves and dominant whites adjusted to the new world. It compares South Africa's relatively peaceful transition from a slave to a non-slave society to the bloody experience of the US South after abolition, analyzing rape hysteria in both places as well as the significance of changing concepts of honor in the Cape. Finally, the book examines the early development of South Africa's particular brand of racism, arguing that abolition, not slavery itself, was a causative factor; although racist attitudes were largely absent while slavery persisted, they grew incrementally but steadily after abolition, driven primarily by whites' need for secure, exploitable labor

Sichtbar wird darüber hinaus die Bedeutung unterschiedlicher (Elite)Kulturen für die Herausbildung unterschiedlicher Duellpraktiken ebenso wie die spezifisch ständische Rationalität des Duells, die sich insbesondere innerhalb korporativer Schutzräume wie beispielsweise im Militär, seit dem späten 18. Jahrhundert dann auch verstärkt im akademischen Milieu, ausbilden konnte.

    Kurzfassung: The German Minority in Interwar Poland analyzes what happened when Germans from three different empires - the Russian, Habsburg and German - were forced to live together in one new state. After the First World War, German national activists made regional distinctions among these Germans and German-speakers in Poland, with preference initially for those who had once lived in the German Empire. Rather than becoming more cohesive over time, Poland's ethnic Germans remained divided and did not unite within a single representative organization. Polish repressive policies and unequal subsidies from the German state exacerbated these differences, while National Socialism created new hierarchies and unleashed bitter intra-ethnic conflict among German minority leaders. Winson Chu challenges prevailing interpretations that German nationalism in the twentieth century viewed 'Germans' as a single homogeneous group of people. His revealing study shows that nationalist agitation could divide as well as unite an embattled ethnicity

    Kurzfassung: Scholars have long recognized the importance of gender and hierarchy in the slave societies of the New World, yet gendered analysis of Cuba has lagged behind study of other regions. Cuban elites recognized that creating and maintaining the Cuban slave society required a rigid social hierarchy based on race, gender, and legal status. Given the dramatic changes that came to Cuba in the wake of the Haitian Revolution and the growth of the enslaved population, the maintenance of order required a patriarchy that placed both women and slaves among the lower ranks. Based on a variety of archival and printed primary sources, this book examines how patriarchy functioned outside the confines of the family unit by scrutinizing the foundation on which nineteenth-century Cuban patriarchy rested. This book investigates how patriarchy operated in the lives of the women of Cuba, from elite women to slaves. Through chapters on motherhood, marriage, education, public charity, and the sale of slaves, insight is gained into the role of patriarchy both as a guiding ideology and lived history in the Caribbean's longest lasting slave society. On the one hand, nature was conceived as a space characterized and inhabited by divine powers, which deserved appropriate respect. On the other, a rationalist view emerged, according to which humans were to subdue nature using their technologies and to dispose of its resources. This book systematically describes the ways in which the Greeks and Romans intervened in the environment and thus traces the history of the tension between the exploitation of resources and the protection of nature, from early Greece to the period of late antiquity.     Kurzfassung: Die 1968er-Bewegung hat die Bundesrepublik politisch kaum verändert. Aber aus ihr heraus hat sich ein neuer Kommunikationsstil entwickelt, der unsere Gesellschaft bis heute prägt. Joachim Scharloth zeigt, dass nicht die politisierten Studenten, sondern die Aktivisten der Kommunebewegung eine nachhaltige Veränderung der bundesrepublikanischen Gesellschaft angestoßen haben. Von der Kritik bürgerlicher Rituale und den Ritualen des Protests in den 1960er Jahren über die Formierung eines hedonistischen Lebensstils im Alternativmilieu in den 1970er Jahren bis hin zum Wandel von Kommunikations- und Verkehrsformen seit den 1980er Jahren reicht der historische Bogen, den dieses Buch schlägt. Kommunikationsformen sind der Seismograph, an dem die gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen ablesbar werden. Anhand bislang noch nicht ausgewerteten Quellenmaterials wird die Entstehung neuer Kommunikationsformen und ihre Verbreitung in Kommuneküchen und Studentenkneipen nachgezeichnet und identitätspolitisch motiviert. Was 1968 als Ausdruck authentischer Gefühle und solidarischer Nähe intendiert war, ist in der Mehrheitsgesellschaft als Inszenierung von Informalität und Emotionalität, als "doing buddy" angekommen.

    Kurzfassung: Biographical note: Dr. Leander Scholz ist Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Internationalen Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie (IKKM) der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
    Kurzfassung: Spätestens seit der Lehre vom Naturzustand, die Thomas Hobbes auf so folgenreiche Weise ausgearbeitet hat, steht die Todesproblematik im Zentrum der politischen Philosophie. Denn unter der Bedingung einer geringeren Eindämmung durch Jenseitsfiktionen erscheint die Absolutheit des Todes nicht nur als eine angstbesetzte Bedrohung, sondern zugleich auch als das, was die politische Ordnung aufrecht erhält. Mit der Fundierung der Gemeinschaft in einer Todesdrohung, die alle angeht, taucht jedoch zugleich eine neue Problematik auf: die Zersetzung der Gemeinschaft, der wiederum allein durch den Horizont einer kollektiven Todesdrohung entgegengewirkt werden kann. Ausgehend von dieser Problematik, zeichnet die Studie von Leander Scholz am Leitfaden politischer Thanatologien den historischen Umbau von einer politischen Theologie zur politischen Ökonomie nach, sowie die Umformung der politischen Ökonomie zu einer politischen Ökologie. Hierbei steht die Formierung eines Lebenswillens im Vordergrund, der nicht mehr bereit ist, die Verinnerlichung der Todesdrohung als Horizont seiner Selbstbehauptung anzuerkennen.

    Kurzfassung: This book traces the origins and early development of what are today loosely termed Britain's Overseas Information Services. It examines how, at the end of the First World War, the British government came to forfeit the considerable lead it had established in propaganda since 1914, and the reasons why it had gradually to re-enter the field during the inter-war years as a direct response to totalitarianism. It surveys the pioneering work of the Foreign Office News Department and its important press office, the commercial propaganda conducted by the Empire Marketing Board and the Travel Association, the foundation and rapid peacetime growth of the British Council to conduct 'cultural diplomacy', and the beginning of the BBC's World Service with the inauguration of foreign-language broadcasts in 1938

    Kurzfassung: Along the Archival Grain offers a unique methodological and analytic opening to the affective registers of imperial governance and the political content of archival forms. In a series of nuanced mediations on the nature of colonial documents from the nineteenth-century Netherlands Indies, Ann Laura Stoler identifies the social epistemologies that guided perception and practice, revealing the problematic racial ontologies of that confused epistemic space. Navigating familiar and extraordinary paths through the lettered lives of those who ruled, she seizes on moments when common sense failed and prevailing categories no longer seemed to work. She asks not what colonial agents knew, but what happened when what they thought they knew they found they did not. Rejecting the notion that archival labor be approached as an extractive enterprise, Stoler sets her sights on archival production as a consequential act of governance, as a field of force with violent effect, and not least as a vivid space to do ethnography

Two decades after Mikhail Gorbachev initiated regime-wrecking radical reforms, Russia has reemerged as a superpower. It has survived a hyperdepression, modernized, restored private property and business, adopted a liberal democratic persona, and asserted claims to global leadership. Many in the West perceive these developments as proof of a better globalized tomorrow, while others foresee a new cold war. Globalizers contend that Russia is speedily democratizing, marketizing, and humanizing, creating a regime based on the rule of law and respect for civil rights. Opponents counterclaim that Russia before and during the Soviet period was similarly misportrayed and insist that Medvedev's Russia is just another variation of an authoritarian 'Muscovite' model that has prevailed for over five centuries. The cases for both positions are explored while chronicling events since 1980

    Kurzfassung: Written by a senior scholar and master mariner, Sailors and Traders is the first comprehensive account of the maritime peoples of the Pacific. It focuses on the sailors who led the exploration and settlement of the islands and New Zealand and their seagoing descendants, providing along the way new material and unique observations on traditional and commercial seagoing against the background of major periods in Pacific history. The book begins by detailing the traditions of sailors, a group whose way of life sets them apart. Like all others who live and work at sea, Pacific mariners face the challenges of an often harsh environment, endure separation from their families for months at a time, revere their vessels, and share a singular attitude to risk and death. The period of prehistoric seafaring is discussed using archaeological data, interpretations from inter island exchanges, experimental voyaging, and recent DNA analysis. Sections on the arrival of foreign exploring ships centuries later concentrate on relations between visiting sailors and maritime communities. The more intrusive influx of commercial trading and whaling ships brought new technology, weapons, and differences in the ethics of trade. The successes and failures of Polynesian chiefs who entered trading with European-type ships are recounted as neglected aspects of Pacific history. As foreign-owned commercial ships expanded in the region so did colonialism, which was accompanied by an increase in the number of sailors from metropolitan countries and a decrease in the employment of Pacific islanders on foreign ships. Eventually small-scale island entrepreneurs expanded inter island shipping, and in 1978 the regional Pacific Forum Line was created by newly independent states. This was welcomed as a symbolic return to indigenous Pacific ocean linkages. The book's final sections detail the life of the modern Pacific seafarer. Most Pacific sailors in the global maritime labor market return home after many months at sea, bringing money, goods, a wider perspective of the world, and sometimes new diseases. Each of these impacts is analyzed, particularly in the case of Kiribati, a major supplier of labor to foreign ships

    Kurzfassung: In a bold rethinking of the Hollywood blacklist and McCarthyite America, Joseph Litvak reveals a political regime that did not end with the 1950s or even with the Cold War: a regime of compulsory sycophancy, in which the good citizen is an informer, ready to denounce anyone who will not play the part of the earnest, patriotic American. While many scholars have noted the anti-Semitism underlying the House Un-American Activities Committee's (HUAC's) anti-Communism, Litvak draws on the work of Theodor W. Adorno, Hannah Arendt, Alain Badiou, and Max Horkheimer to show how the committee conflated Jewishness with what he calls "comic cosmopolitanism," an intolerably seductive happiness, centered in Hollywood and New York, in show business and intellectual circles. He maintains that HUAC took the comic irreverence of the "uncooperative" witnesses as a crime against an American identity based on self-repudiation and the willingness to "name names"

    Kurzfassung: Intending Scotland reconsiders our understanding of the development of Scottish culture from the Enlightenment to the present day. The book recovers and reconnects Scottish thinkers from Hume and Reid in the eighteenth century, to Andrew Seth, Norman Kemp Smith and John Macmurray in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It contextualises their work in relation to the development of Scottish anthropology and psychology, from which emerged, in the work of Ian Suttie and R. D. Laing, some of the most significant challenges to Freudian psychology. Craig uses this Scottish tradition to challenge theories of the nation over the last thirty years, providing critiques of Bhabha's 'hybridity' and of Anderson's 'imagined community', and of theories of 'the Other' within a postcolonial framework. Ranging over Scotland's intellectual and cultural history across three centuries, taking in gardens and gardeners as well as historians and historiographers, scientists and engineers as well as philosophers and psychologists, Intending Scotland presents a reinterpretation of Scottish cultural life as radical as the developments in the nation's contemporary politics. Key debates addressed in Intending Scotland include: *Challenges negative conceptions of the Scottish cultural past and of the failures of Scotland's cultural development *Sets Scotland's recent political development in the context of its cultural achievements in the twentieth century *Deals with major figures in Scottish culture - Hume, Reid - and shows how our modern understanding of them is dependent on the work of later Scottish thinkers *Engages with prominent critics in contemporary theory - Anderson, Derrida, Bhabha, Kearney - and develops a critique of them from a Scottish perspective.

Jahrhundert hat die erste Frauenbewegung mit der Verankerung eigens Frauen vorbehaltener Bildungs- und Berufsbereiche zur Durchsetzung eines differenzbezogenen Musters der Fraueninklusion beigetragen. In der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts hingegen tritt die zweite Frauenbewegung für ein uneingeschränktes Recht auf Gleichheit ein. Das Buch führt diesen Wandel von Differenz zu Gleichheit auf konstitutive Zusammenhänge zwischen mobilisierungsfähigen Semantiken der Frauenbewegungen und Prozessen der Binnendifferenzierung des politischen Systems zurück. Seit den 1960er Jahren ist mit den modernen Volksparteien ein Staat entstanden, der der Garantie gesellschaftlicher Teilnahmerechte der Gesamtbevölkerung verpflichtet ist. Schichtung verliert als soziale Konfliktlinie an Bedeutung. Erst diese Entwicklung verhilft dem Anspruch der individuellen und sozialen Gleichheit der Geschlechter und dem Muster einer geschlechtsunabhängigen Inklusion zum Durchbruch

    Kurzfassung: This study makes an original contribution to scholarship by tracking and evaluating the significance of the various individuals and (particularly) institutions responsible for the traffic of ideas both between Spain and the outside world, and also within Madrid and the interior. This has not been attempted before, and it is a necessary supplement to the usual focus on individual authors and texts, allowing us to appreciate the importance of setting the latter in the context of the circuits of knowledge functioning in Spain in their time. It looks in breadth and in detail at the nature of Spain's cultural and intellectual exchanges with Europe in the early decades of the twentieth century. Three features make it original in its approach. It focuses on a broad range of institutions, including publishing houses and journals, as 'centres of exchange', and looks at how they promoted and facilitated Spain's contact with Europe. The second feature is that it foregrounds the idea of 'cultural imaginaries' as the driving force behind Spain's exchanges with Europe. Thirdly, in terms of territory, it departs from a Franco/German-centred concept of Europe, paying particular attention to a Europe of the margins, in the form of England and Russia, as two countries that held particular attractions for the Spanish mind.     Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Am Kreuzungspunkt der Diskurse um Nation und Raum entstanden Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts Konzepte von Grenzen, die keine Linien mehr waren, sondern Räume. Dies war die Grundlage eines Raumbildes, das Deutschland nicht nur über seine Staats-, sondern auch über die deutsche Sprachgrenze hinaus vergrößerte. Der Band untersucht diese Transformation der Grenzen am Beispiel der deutschen Westgrenze. Anknüpfend an den antifranzösischen Nationsentwurf der Politischen Romantik und die wissenschaftliche Bestimmung der westlichen Sprachgrenze werden die Konzepte »Westmark«, »Westland« und »Westraum« rekonstruiert. Von den alldeutschen, jungkonservativen und nationalsozialistischen Diskursgemeinschaften geprägt, bezeichneten diese einen deutschen Grenzraum, der von der Kanal- und Nordseeküste bis zu den französischen Alpen und zur Rhône reichte, zugleich jedoch in hohem Maße symbolisch und ideologisch aufgeladen war. Als Gegenstück zum »Ostland« wurde dieses Raumkonstrukt zum Leitbild deutscher Kriegsziel- und Germanisierungspolitik und zu einem Symbolraum des »Neuen Europa« der SS.

    Kurzfassung: Heroes and Victims explores the cultural power of war memorials in 20th-century Romania through two world wars and a succession of radical political changes-from attempts to create pluralist democratic political institutions after World War I to shifts toward authoritarian rule in the 1930s, to military dictatorships and Nazi occupation, to communist dictatorships, and finally to pluralist democracies with populist tendencies. Examining the interplay of centrally articulated and locally developed commemorations, Maria Bucur's study engages monumental sites of memory, local funerary markers, rituals, and street names as well as autobiographical writings, novels, oral narratives, and film. This book reveals the ways in which a community's religious, ethnic, economic, regional, and gender traditions shaped local efforts at memorializing its war dead

    Kurzfassung: Die Dobrudscha am Schwarzen Meer, ein seit der griechischen Antike bekannter Kulturraum mit einer Fläche von knapp 23.000 qkm, der heute zu mehr als zwei Dritteln zu Rumänien und zu knapp einem Drittel zu Bulgarien gehört, ist seit dem Beitritt dieser beiden Länder zur Euopäischen Union (EU) am 1. Januar 2007 ein neuer Grenzraum der EU geworden. Dort sind Politik und Verwaltung auf lokaler Ebene mit zahlreichen Problemen konfrontiert, die teilweise typisch für Transformationsstaaten sind, teilweise aber auch der spezifischen regionalen Situation geschuldet sind. Insbesondere vier Problembereiche sind zu nennen, die im Rahmen einer internationalen Tagung im September 2007 in Konstanza (Constanta) am Schwarzen Meer (Rumänien) erörtert wurden: die sozioökonomische, die ethnische, die politisch-geographische und die ökologische Situation. Die Beiträge dieser Tagung, von denen die meisten in den vorliegenden Band aufgenommen sind, vermitteln aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln ein vielschichtiges Bild dieser Region, deren aktuelle Probleme oft auch auf widersprüchliche Auffassungen verschiedener Interessengruppen zurückzuführen sind.
