Abstract: Many Americans who believe that women should be able to choose when and whether to bear a child are also deeply disturbed by the one-and-one-half million abortions performed each year in this country. They regard these concerns as irreconcilable, because the topic of abortion, until now, has been framed as a black-or-white conflict between the rights of the mother and those of the fetus. The very idea of compromise or common cause draws scorn among factions. How, after all, can the political debate about abortion permit any more options than pregnancy itself does? This extraordinary book tells fifty stories about women from strikingly diverse backgrounds who have had to choose whether to give birth or to abort. About half of these women carried their pregnancies to term; the others ended them. Their decisions arose from heartfelt struggles, expressed in terms completely different from those that prevail in the public debate
Abstract: Some women who abhor abortion ended up choosing that option; others who are prochoice opted for birth or had abortions that, in some instances, caused them sorrow or regret. The outcome of nearly every private dilemma hung on practical and emotional matters - the quality of the connection between the woman and the man, the financial resources available, the number of children the woman already had, the state of her self-esteem, and the health of the fetus - rather than on the weighing of rights. These insightful and eloquent authors hold up a mirror to our society and show us that we have pitted mother against fetus. They ask whether we have emphasized the rights of individuals at the expense of human responsibility and care. This most intellectually challenging yet sensitive book transcends all other books on this topic. The complexity and rich nuances of the stories it tells permits us to see this controversy with new eyes
Abstract: These stories, woven together, are our nation's story - one that has never been told by the long and angry debate. Once we learn to hear these women, we may also learn to listen to one another and work toward common values and moral responsibility

Abstract: This is the first systematic study of a topic which cuts straight through the heart of many aspects of intellectual life in modern China and has hitherto remained unexplored because it has been deemed to be embarrassing and politically unfashionable: the discourse of race. This book looks at the emergence of racial stereotypes during the nineteenth century, the gradual formation of a racial discourse at the turn of the century, the conceptualization of racial nationalism at the beginning of the 1910s, and the institutionalization and habituation of this discourse by the academic community in the 1920s and '30s. It also provides the first analysis of eugenics--the pseudo-science of race improvement--in Republican China. The work is based on a wide variety of sources, some hitherto neglected by sinologists, such as primers on anthropology, genetics and eugenics, pamphlets on racial nationalism, medical handbooks, schoolbooks and caricatures
Abstract: The author first demonstrates that racial categories of analysis were not confined to the edges of Chinese thought systems, but have been widespread and influential during the past century. Secondly, he argues that racial discourse did not result from 'Western influence' but was largely due to endogenous developments which had only a minimal relationship to Western thought. Thirdly, he dispels the myth of Chinese 'cultural universalism' to show that outgroups were often classified according to physical characteristics alleged to be permanent. And finally, he indicates that this discourse did not exist in isolation of social movements but was part of a symbolic universe in perpetual change. Frank Dikotter's conceptual approach is grounded in discourse analysis, social constructivism and intergroup sociology
Abstract: He makes detailed comparisons with Western notions of race, and approaches a number of related topics such as Occidentalism, non-Darwinian evolutionism, categorical thought, the construction of emotions, and the misuse of science. Racial prejudice is still endemic in the People's Republic of China and the book provides the background to a better understanding of this crucial phenomenon. The Discourse of Race in Modern China will be of interest not only to students of Chinese affairs, but also to those concerned with the history of mentalities, race studies, group psychology, medical anthropology and cultural studies in general

Abstract: In what ways did the rituals associated with death in Renaissance Florence serve as an indicator of how Florentine society saw itself? In Death and Ritual in Renaissance Florence, Sharon Strocchia shows how these death rites - especially civic funerals - reflected Florence's quick rise to commercial wealth in the fourteenth century and steady progression toward displays of princely power in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Strocchia begins by examining the basic components of civic funerary rites and their symbolic meaning. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, she then traces the changes and continuities of these rites throughout the Renaissance. She shows how the rise of funeral pomp in the late fourteenth century as linked to social mobility, the redistribution of wealth, corporate politics, and the psychology of the post-plague decades. She analyses the impact of "elitism, statism, and civism" on civic and family rites after 1400 and charts the social effects of rising assumption trends. And she focuses on the complex cycles of change stemming from the establishment and rejection Medici control, which by entrenching patrician domination helped pave the way for the Medici principate. "Rather than simply recasting the traditional history of the city," Strocchia writes, "the history of death rites shows us the sheer intricacy of how ritual and society defined each other. These episodes point us toward culture in action: the tangled, dense, and decidedly unstable relations binding family and state, gender and politics, word and image."
