Abstract: In this 1996 cultural history which considers the transformation of south Indian institutions under British colonial rule in the nineteenth century, Pamela Price focuses on the two former 'little kingdoms' of Ramnad and Sivaganga which came under colonial governance as revenue estates. She demonstrates how rivalries among the royal families and major zamindari temples, and the disintegration of indigenous institutions of rule, contributed to the development of nationalism and identity amongst the people of southern Tamil country. The author also shows how religious symbols and practices going back to the seventeenth century were reformulated and acquired a new significance in the colonial context. Arguing for a reappraisal of the relationship of Hinduism to politics, Price finds that these symbols and practices continue to inform popular expectation of political leadership today.

Abstract: This intriguing anthropological study investigates how the boatmen of Banaras have repositioned themselves within the traditional social organization and used their privileged position on the river to contest upper-caste and state domination. Assa Doron examines the evolution of the boatmen community, drawing on a variety of sources to illuminate the cultural politics of social and economic inequality in contemporary India. Caste, Occupation and Politics on the Ganges offers insight into recent debates about the cultural and historical forms of social practice and resistance at the juncture between tradition and the global economy, and will therefore appeal not only to anthropologists, but to anyone working in the field of development studies, globalization, religion, politics and cultural studies.

Abstract: Although temples have been important in South Indian society and history, there have been few attempts to study them within an integrated anthropological framework. Professor Appadurai develops such a framework in this ethnohistorical case study, in which he interprets the politics of worship in the Sri Partasarati Svami Temple, a famous ancient Sri Vaisnava shrine in India. The author uses the methods and concepts of both cultural anthropology and social history to construct a model of institutional change in South Asia under colonial rule. Focusing on the problem of authority as a cultural concept and as a managerial reality, Professor Appadurai considers some classic problems of South Asian anthropology: problems of deference, sumptuary symbolism, and religious organization. In addition, he addresses such issues as the nature of conflict under a hybrid colonial legal system, the political implications of sumptuary disputes, and the structure of relations between polity and religion in pre-modern South Asia. These aspects of the study should interest a broad range of scholars.

Abstract: The relationship between anthropology and history has been contradictory as also passionate and productive. The two have often displayed mistrust of the other discipline and at other times have underscored their key convergences. Over the last three decades, the interchange between the two disciplines have acquired a fresh purpose in theoretical and empirical studies. This has resulted in considerations for the history of anthropology and anthropology of history. This collection brings together the terrains and trajectories of the entangling of anthropology and history. It offers to students and scholars a wide-ranging domain of anthropological and historical endeavour under the rubric of historical anthropology-marking its departures, charting its contexts, exploring its characteristics and tracking its predicaments and possibilities.Conversations between anthropology and history have been approached by treating the two as disciplines. It explores formative orientations of anthropology to time and temporality, and of history to culture and tradition. It considers the more recent transformations of anthropology and history. It discusses important developments in study of pasts and communities, empire and nation, and culture and power in South Asia as part of a wider interplay between anthropology and history. In a nutshell, this volume attempts to open up the terms of historical anthropology.

Abstract: In A Thousand Hills, bestselling author Stephen Kinzer tells the dramatic story of Paul Kagame, whose rebel army stopped the genocide and whose government has turned Rwanda into a new star of Africa. Kagame grew up as a wretched refugee, shaped one of the most audacious covert operations in the history of clandestine warfare, and then emerged as a visionary leader with radical ideas about how poor countries can climb out of their misery. Abstract: This rich ethnographic study explores the life and work of successful marabout women in Dakar. It is set against the background of their private family lives, of developments in Senegalese society, and of global changes. While including female experts in spirit possession and plant-based healing, it also gives a rare insight in the work of women who offer Islamic knowledge such as Arabic astrology, numerology, divination and prayer sessions. With the analysis of marabout women's work this study sheds light on the ways in which women's authority in esoteric knowledge is negotiated, legitimated, and publicly recognised in Dakar. The study focuses especially upon marabout women's strategies to gain their clients' trust. Reference to rural areas is a significant element in this process. This study thus contributes to an understanding of the gendered way in which trust and scepticism are related to marabouts' work and of the role of a connection between Dakar and the rural areas therein.

Abstract: Patterns of Middle Class Consumption in India and China explores the complex history and sociology of the middle class from a comparative perspective. It has papers written by sociologists, anthropologists and political scientists rather than economists, so the emphasis is on cultural shifts rather than economic statistics. The major contribution of this volume is that these two emerging powers of Asia are not, as is usual, compared to the West, but with each other. Considering that these two societies have so much in common in scale, civilization history and as emerging economies, the book is timely. The focus of the book is on the social and political implications of the new consumption patterns among the middle classes of India and China in the context of economic growth, liberalization of markets and globalization. Reflecting upon and critically engaging with the traditional sociological notions on which definitions of the middle class have been based, the book analyzes the intermingling of these notions with new attitudes in the wake of the consumer revolution. More specifically, an entire gamut of aspects of the consumer culture have been explored-tourism, leisure activities and the entertainment industry (art, Karaoke and soap operas) as well as the consumption of experiences through these. It is argued that these phenomena have particular Indian and Chinese incarnations, which need to be analyzed in a manner that does not privilege a limited western experience of globalization. With its fresh insights and perspectives, the book will appeal to students of anthropology, sociology, political science, media studies and cultural studies. It will also be useful for market research professionals.

Abstract: This book offers another frame through which to view the event of the 2006 outrigger landing of 43 West Papuans to Australia. West Papuans have crossed boundaries to seek asylum since 1962, usually eastward into Papua New Guinea (PNG), and occasionally southward to Australia. Between 1984-86, around 11,000 people crossed into PNG seeking asylum. After the Government of PNG acceded to the United Nations Convention and Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees, West Papuans were relocated from informal camps on the international border to a single inland location called East Awin. This volume provides an ethnography of that settlement based on the author's fieldwork carried out in 1998-99. The various paths of flight and boundaries crossed, and people's efforts to inhabit East Awin the empty rainforest, seek to capture the texture of West Papuan displacement.
Description / Table of Contents: Prologue: Intoxicating flag -- Speaking historically about West Papua -- Culture as the conscious object of performance -- A flight path -- Sensing displacement -- Refugee settlements as social spaces -- Inscribing the empty rainforest with our history -- Unsated sago appetites -- Becoming translokal -- Permissive residents -- Relocation to connected places -- Being 'indigenous' in the Indonesian province of Papua -- Coda: Forty-three West Papuans arrive in Australia by outrigger canoe, 2006

Abstract: Over the past fifty years a project of culturally reflexive ethnic self-definition has transformed the Sufi poetry of the Uyghur muqam song tradition into a cultural canon used to represent the Uyghur ethnic group within China and on world stages. This book compares the cultural materials, skills, and contexts of traditional muqam performance with those of the "modern" repertoire. Uyghur editors -politicians, scholars, and musicians -have revised this repertoire and created historical discourses around it that reflect new concepts of nationhood and ethnicity. In the muqams they have created a public representation used to promote Uyghur claims to an original, autochthonous piece of world cultural history and a dignified, shared identity. Light's ethnographic study of cultural reflexivity breaks new ground in understanding how the editing project relates to the ethnic politics of cultural intimacy around Sufism, gender, love, oral performance, language, and poetry.

Abstract: A fascinating narrative excursion into a bizarre episode in 19th century Ethiopian and British imperial history, featuring a remote African despot and his monstrous European-built gun. Towards the end of 1867, Emperor Tewodros II of Ethiopia burnt his own capital, took his vast mortar -- named 'Sevastopol' -- and began a retreat to the mountain stronghold of Mekdala. For months thousands of his followers struggled to build a road for the great gun, levelling the soil of the high plains, hacking out a way down into mile-deep gorges. At the same time, a hostile British force, under General Napier, was advancing from the coast. It was the climax to the reign of one of the most colourful and extraordinary rulers in African history. Discovering traces of the road in the highlands, and drawing on years of involvement with Ethiopia, Philip Marsden recounts the story of Tewodros. From his spectacular rise -- from camel-raider to King of Kings -- Tewodros was a man who combined a sense of Biblical destiny with personal charisma and military genius. He restored the fortunes of the ancient Christian kingdom, introduced reforms to his army and to the church, and dreamed of an alliance with the great powers of Europe. But as his reforms stalled and the British Foreign Office lost his letter to Queen Victoria, Tewodros's behaviour became more and more violent and erratic. When he imprisoned the British consul, years of negotiation culminated in one of the most bizarre -- and expensive -- campaigns of the Victorian age. 'The Barefoot Emperor' is history at its most thrilling and dramatic. Using narrative skills proven in such acclaimed books as 'The Bronski House' and 'The Chains of Heaven', Philip Marsden recreates scenes and characters of glittering intensity -- and the intriguing paradoxes of a central figure grappling not only with his own people and his own demons, but with the seductive and unstoppable approach of the modern world.

Series Statement: International Series of Psychosocial Perspectives on Trauma, Displaced People, and Political Violence
Keywords: Flüchtling Frau ; Kurde ; Gesundheit ; Leid ; Psychologie ; Psychiatrie ; Norwegen
Abstract: This is probably the only book of it kind that focuses exclusively on refugee women, and one of the few that limit their scope only to one group of refugees - the Kurds, in this case. Although the book is about Kurdish women in Norway, its appeal and contents are nevertheless of universal value and applicability. The general reader will get an unparalleled insight into a therapeutic way of working with refugees and the specialist reader will have a vast range of themes to feast on. These include theoretical considerations of ideas about collective trauma, narrative life stories, working cross-culturally, mental health perspectives on refugees, and the formation of meaning, to mention but a few. Review: 'This remarkable book is the second in the International Series of Psychosocial Perspectives on Trauma, Displaced People and Political Violence and it continues to offer what the first volume did - a unique opporunity for English-speaking readers to familiarise themselves with important European contributions in this field which are not usually accessible to them.'Nora Ahlberg allows us to get privileged close look at her practice and to listen to the voices of her refugee clients. But her book is much more than a reproduction of their tumultuous experiences. It achieves a most sensitive balance between providing authentic testimonies of suffering and endurance, and articulating an authoritative and scholarly methodology for treating this delicate material. I am not aware of any other book that addresses so ably both of these facets of the refugee experience.' - Renos K. Papadopoulos, from the Series Editor's Foreword 'Ahlberg's source material consists of narratives by traumatised Kurdish refugees as they have been told to her in a therapeutic situation while using an interpreter. A main point is that these narratives are not merely about the past tragedies of these refugees, but that they just as much represent their attempts at reinterpreting their lives and creating meaning in a new culture. 'They all share the topic of how refugee narratives of traumatic experiences are used as a source for cultural knowledge. The said narratives emerge as a rich source material for comparative religion. Ahlberg's approach is characterised by her broad interdisciplinary competence where the history of religion, psychology, sociological and narratological perspectives are utilised in order to reach a holistic perspective.' - Professor Einar Thomassen, University of Bergen, Islamic and Sufi studies '"No Five Fingers are Alike" is a study of trauma from a wider, interdisciplinary point of view... It documents extensive knowledge of the many-faced sides of trauma therapy, and is obviously very interesting and useful for both academics and professionals in the fi eld. The book is written in a matter-of-fact manner, which balances very well with the almost explosive empirical evidence of human violations described and analysed... It emphasises a need for multicultural awareness and interdisciplinary approaches...' - Professor Yngve Lithman, University of Bergen, Head of Interdisciplinary International Migration and Ethnic Relations Studies, Sociologist

Abstract: The book covers selected topics of Eritrea's tradition. The editors have assembled a distinguished set of Eritrean scholars and professionals to contribute to the volume, each capable of addressing individual aspects of Eritrean traditions from their particular fields of expertise. While the methodology and style of analysis have been left to the best judgment of each contributor to use the best practices prevailing in the respective field, each was asked to provide a cogent analytic description of the tradition in question, exposing its essential elements, and to address the implications of those elements to the long-term development of the country. The book is intended to serve two related purposes: first, to document and analyze selected traditional legacies and cultural practices in Eritrea, and second, to establish the linkage of those legacies and practices to Eritrea's current and prospective socio-economic developmental goals. Readers should thus be able to gain a comprehensive picture of how the traditional practices may influence social and economic development in Eritrea. The book is aimed at an interdisciplinary and general audience interested in Eritrea's traditions and its relevance to development issues and concerns. The book can serve as a reference to policy makers and professionals, and as an educational resource for universities and public libraries. Further, consultants and researchers interested in issues related to sustainable economic development and social progress in Eritrea will find the book to be a good source of relevant information.

Abstract: The international community increasingly responds to civil wars, humanitarian crises, and other intrastate conflicts through the instrument of UN peacekeeping. Nearly all of these interventions take place in non-Western areas and involve interactions among militaries and nongovernmental organizations from all around the globe. In this wide-ranging book, Rubinstein draws on decades of his own research on peacekeeping, and on other current and historical cases, to develop a broad understanding of the roles that culture plays in peacekeeping's success or failure. Peacekeeping under Fire shows that cultural considerations are key elements at all levels of peacekeeping operations. Culture influences what happens between peacekeepers and local populations, how military and nongovernmental organizations interact, and even how missions are planned and authorized. Peacekeeping under Fire analyzes how political symbolism and ritual are critical to peacekeeping and demonstrates how questions of power, identity, and political perception emerge from the cultural context of peacekeeping. Review: Today more than ever we need an internationalist and humanist perspective on peacekeeping. In contrast to other studies that seek a technical fix to peacekeeping failures in the past, this absorbing new book, by a leading anthropologist of peace and conflict, places power and culture at the center of its analysis and recommendations.-Matthew Gutmann, Brown UniversityAn engaging book that analyses the complex world of the peacekeeper. Peacekeepers are not robots, but humans with powerful drives, motivations and sensitivities and this work seeks to address the way in which these factors play out on the world stage. If you have rarely considered the human side of peacekeeping and how it affects those whose duties require a range of response in critical environments, then this book will provide you with useful insight.-Dr. Deborah Goodwin, Royal Military Academy Sandhurst,UK Robert Rubinstein's Peacekeeping Under Fire-set in the turbulent contemporary world- is a fascinating and thought provoking investigation. Ethnographically rich and theoretically sophisticated, it is essential reading for anyone interested in peace and international security.- Carolyn Nordstrom, University of Notre DameThis book is a significant contribution to our understanding of international peacekeeping, and how it has changed in the past two decades, as well as an important demonstration of how the perspective of cultural anthropology can enrich our understanding of modern military operations.- David R. Segal, Director Center for Research on Military Organization, University of MarylandRubinstein convincingly makes the case that acknowledging the cultural dimensions of UN peacekeeping missions is not just a 'humane' and politically correct thing to do; rather, consideration of culture, especially symbolic expressions, is an essential ingredient for the effectiveness and success of peacekeeping missions.Rubinstein's Peacekeeping under Fire gives the first extensive account of how culture directly impacts peacekeeping operations and sets the stage for a new field in 21st century peacekeeping interventions.Tanja Hohe ChopraThe World Bank, Kenya

Abstract: With the increasing worldwide problems of migration, research into its causes and effects become every more urgent. This volume takes stock of recent advancements that social science research in both Europe and the United States has made to understanding central aspects of international migration. The focus is on conceptual, methodological, and theoretical contributions that have emerged out of empirical research with regard to state policies and interests toward migration, dual citizenship, incorporation, transnational ties, entrepreneurship, illegal migration, intergenerational incorporation, and religion. No other publication brings the scholarship together in a similarly comprehensive manner, showing how the different approaches on each continent complement and speak to one another, thus contributing to the internationalization of migration studies. Alejandro Portes is Howard Harrison and Gabrielle Snyder Beck Professor of Sociology and director of the Center for Migration and Development at Princeton University. His current research is on the adaptation process of the immigrant second generation and the rise of transnational immigrant communities in the United States. One of his most recent books, co-authored with Ruben G. Rumbaut, is Legacies: The Story of the Immigrant Second Generation and Ethnicities: Children of Immigrants in America (California 2001), winner of the 2002 Distinguished Scholarship Award from the American Sociological Association. Josh DeWind has directed the Migration Program of the Social Science Research Council since 1994. From 1989 to 2002 was a Professor of Anthropology at Hunter College, City University of New York, where he initiated the college's Program on International Human Rights and directed its Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program. He has published numerous books, reports, and articles related to migration including The Handbook of International Migration: The American Experience, edited with Charles Hirschman and Philip Kasinitz (Russell Sage Foundation, 1999), which this current volume updates and provides an international perspective. He was a founding member of the Center for Immigrants Rights, National Coalition for Haitian Rights, and National Immigration Forum.

Abstract: Iran is an ancient country, an oil-exporting economy and an Islamic Republic. It experienced two full-scale revolutions in the twentieth century, the latter of which had large and important regional and international consequences, including an eight-year war with Saddam Hussein`s Iraq. And now in the twenty-first century, it confronts issues and experiences problems which have important implications for its future development and external relations.Featuring outstanding contributions from leading sociologists, social anthropologists, political scientists and economists in the field of Iranian studies, this book is the first to examine Iran and its position in the contemporary world. Abstract: Indirect rule - the British colonial policy of employing indigenous tribal chiefs as political intermediaries - has typically been understood by scholars as little more than an expedient solution to imperial personnel shortages. A re-examination of the history of indirect rule in South Africa reveals it to have been much more: an ideological strategy designed to win legitimacy for colonial officials. Indirect rule became the basic template from which segregation and apartheid emerged during the twentieth century and set the stage for a post-apartheid debate over African political identity and "traditional authority" that continues to shape South African politics today. This new study, based on firsthand field research and archival material only recently made available to scholars, unveils the inner workings of South African segregation. Drawing influence from a range of political theorists including Machiavelli, Marx, Weber, Althusser, and Zizek, Myers develops a groundbreaking understanding of the ways in which leaders struggle to legitimize themselves through the costuming of political power. J. C.Myers is associate professor of political science at California State University, Stanislaus.

Abstract: The importance of Diane Victor`s impressive body of drawings and prints lies not simply from her biting social commentary and the sometimes macabre nature of her images, but also in the interplay between the tough and the fragile in her work, between the difficult subject matter of her visual narratives and the delicate mark-making and fragility of her preferred media.Victor`s steady output over two decades, her dedication to techniques and form, and her courageous and often humorous representation of the worlda around her have made her one of the most important of contemporary South African artists. She is a draughtswoman of the first order and her unfliching satire comments on the art tradition to which she is heir and the fragmented absurdity of South African history.Diane Victor has exhibited widely in South Africa and abroad and her work is held by several important collections, including Iziko South African National Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Abstract: Abstract: Malika Zeghal analyzes the historical roots and recent evolution of Moroccan Islamist movements in the context of a new political system that combines pluralistic electoral competition with authoritarian government. To elucidate these ideological and institutional transformations, she stresses the role of 'ulama and Islamic institutions and the history of their tense and unequal relationship with an authoritarian monarchy constrained by the religious origins of its legitimacy. She analyzes the transformations in the movements' political strategies and religious discourses generated by the legalized Islamist party's integration into the political process. This book provides an original perspective on the prospects for democratization in an Arab country and the role religion plays in that process. In a clear and compelling presentation that encompasses reactions to the 2003 suicide attacks in Casablanca and the legislative election of 2007, the author combines historical analysis with her perspective, as a political scientist, on the rapidly changing dynamics of Islam and politics in Morocco.Malika Zeghal analyzes the historical roots and recent evolution of Moroccan Islamist movements in the context of a new political system that combines pluralistic electoral competition with authoritarian government. Abstract: In Britain we claim to know a lot about Indian cuisine - we have London's Brick Lane and Manchester's Curry Mile, and takeaways jostle for space on high streets up and down the country. But what we experience as 'Indian' is just as likely to be Bangladeshi, or British, or a watered-down mixture designed especially for the western palate. Indian cuisine is much more diverse than we might imagine - just as diverse, in fact, as the Indian people themselves. In "Eating India", Bengali food expert Chitrita Banerji takes us on a thrilling journey through a national food formed by generations of arrivals, assimilations and conquests. In her mouth-watering prose, she explores how each wave of newcomers - ancient Aryan tribes, Persians, Middle Eastern Jews, Mongols, Arabs, Europeans - brought innovating new ways to combine the country's rich native spices, poppy seeds, saffron and mustard to the vegetables, fish, grains and pulses that are the staples of the Indian kitchen. She travels across the country, visiting traditional weddings, tiffin rooms, city markets, roadside teaspoon cafes, tribal villages and an industrial size temple kitchen, to find out how India's turbulent history has shaped its people, in particular its cuisine. As well as delving into the country's culinary roots, Chitrita also investigates an India in current flux, and asks how a food culture's 'authenticity' can survive in an ever-changing, young-old, immigrant nation. Beautifully presented and illustrated throughout, "Eating India" will stand as an authority on Indian food for years to come.

Abstract: Doris Lessing and Yvonne Vera are among the writers whose work concentrates on disorientation, marginalization and homelessness in a colonized country. The two authors represent two worlds of Zimbabwe: Doris Lessing feels uneasy with her membership in the class of colonizers, but she nevertheless represents the privileged, Yvonne Vera fully identifies with the oppressed, was personally shaped by colonialism. This study focuses on Vera's internal and Lessing's external perspectives of Zimbabwean history and culture, on the impact that colonialism has on a writer from the colonized community vs. on a writer from the colonizer's community. Abstract: Soap opera speaks a universal language, presenting characters and plots that resonate far beyond the culture that creates them. Latin American soap operas - telenovelas - have found enthusiastic audiences throughout the Americas and Europe, as well as in Egypt, Russia, and China, while Mexican narco-dramas have become highly popular among Latinos in the United States. In this first comprehensive analysis of telenovelas and narco-dramas, Hugo Benavides assesses the dynamic role of melodrama in creating meaningful cultural images to explain why these genres have become so successful while more elite cultural productions are declining in popularity. Benavides offers close readings of the Colombian telenovelas "Betty la fea" (along with its Mexican and U.S. reincarnations "La fea mas bella" and "Ugly Betty"), "Adrian esta de visita", and "Pasion de gavilanes"; the Brazilian historical telenovela "Xica"; and, a variety of Mexican narco-drama films. Situating these melodramas within concrete historical developments in Latin America, he shows how telenovelas and narco-dramas serve to unite peoples of various countries and provide a voice of rebellion against often-oppressive governmental systems. Indeed, Benavides concludes that as one of the most effective and lucrative industries in Latin America, telenovelas and narco-dramas play a key role in the ongoing reconfiguration of social identities and popular culture.

Abstract: Few modern voices have had as profound an impact on the black identity and critical race theory as Frantz Fanon, and Black Skin, White Masks represents some of his most important work. Fanons masterwork is now available in a new translation that updates its language for a new generation of readers. A major influence on civil rights, anti-colonial, and black consciousness movements around the world, Black Skin, White Masks is the unsurpassed study of the black psyche in a white world. Hailed for its scientific analysis and poetic grace when it was first published in 1952, the book remains a vital force today from one of the most important theorists of revolutionary struggle, colonialism, and racial difference in history. Abstract: Crime, violence, and insecurity are among the most important social topics in contemporary Costa Rica. These three issues play a central role in the media, politics, and everyday life, and the impression has emerged that security has changed for the worse and that society is now threatened permanently. However, crime statistics do not support this perception. The paper thus asks why violence and crime generate such huge fear in society. The thesis is that the Costa Rican national identitywith Costa Rica constructed as a nonviolent nationimpedes a realistic discussion about the phenomena and their causes, and simultaneously provides a platform for sensationalism and the social construction of fear.
