    Abstract: With the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, a third of the world's population came to live under communist regimes. Over the next forty years, the lives of most people in the non-communist world were also shaped in some way by communism and the Cold War waged against it. In the cases of many artists, intellectuals and workers, this involvement was wished and active. Yet, while the left-leaning tendencies of western artists have long been recognised, the extent and depth of musicians' involvement in communism specifically has been largely ignored, suppressed, or dismissed as youthful infatuation. The present volume offers, for the first time, a representative overview of the relationship of music and communism outside the communist bloc. Ranging across multiple musical genres, five continents, and seven decades, the nineteen chapters address both prominent musicians who aligned themselves with communism, and the investments in music of a range of communist and radical Marxist organisations (including national Communist Parties, the Black Panther Party, and Maoist and Trotskyist groups in Britain, Germany and Nepal). In the book's first section, five musicians (Giacomo Manzoni, Ernie Lieberman, Konrad Boehmer, Chris Cutler and Georgina Born) offer their own, more personal perspectives upon their engagement with communism. The volume as a whole highlights two 'red strains' in particular: the irreducible differences of opinion between communists regarding key debates concerning music's role in society; and the multiple challenges faced by every engaged musician in reconciling political and artistic agendas.     Abstract: Zusammenfassung: The integration of immigrants into a larger society begins at the local level. Turkish Berlin reveals how integration has been experienced by second-generation Turkish immigrant women in two neighborhoods in Berlin, Germany. While the neighborhoods are similar demographically, the lived experience of the residents is surprisingly different. Informed by first-person interviews with both public officials and immigrants, Annika Marlen Hinze makes clear that local integration policies--often created by officials who have little or no contact with immigrants--have significant effects on the assimilation of outsiders into a community and a society. Focusing on the Turkish neighborhoods of Kreuzberg and Neukölln, Hinze shows how a combination of local policy making and grassroots organizing have contributed to one neighborhood earning a reputation as a hip, multicultural success story and the other as a rougher neighborhood featuring problem schools and high rates of unemployment. Aided by her interviews, she describes how policy makers draw from their imaginations of urban space, immigrants, and integration to develop policies that do not always take social realities into consideration. She offers useful examples of how official policies can actually exacerbate the problems they are trying to help solve and demonstrates that a powerful history of grassroots organizing and resistance can have an equally strong impact on political outcomes

    Abstract: "„Religion und Politik“ wurde spätestens mit den jüngsten Revolutionen im arabischen Raum ein zentrales Thema für die Demokratisierungsforschung. Wie beeinflussen religiöse Akteure Demokratisierung? Welche Faktoren bedingen ihre Einflussnahme? Der vorliegende Band bietet erste Antworten auf diese Fragen. Hierfür wird ein theoretisch-konzeptionelles Analyseraster zur Untersuchung der Rolle religiöser Akteure im Regimewandel entwickelt. In keiner der behandelten jungen mehrheitlich christlichen, christlich-orthodoxen oder muslimischen Demokratien haben religiöse Akteure das Ergebnis des jeweiligen Transformationsprozesses bestimmt. Sie haben durch ihre politische und gesellschaftliche Einflussnahme aber zu Prozessen der Erosion autoritärer Herrschaft und zur Demokratisierung beigetragen. Die Möglichkeiten religiöser Akteure auf Demokratisierung einzuwirken, hängen vor allem von ihrer Organisationsform und der formalrechtlichen sowie de facto Stellung gegenüber dem politischen Regime ab. Ihre Ziele, Mittel und die politische Tragweite ihrer vertretenen Theologien sind vornehmlich davon bedingt, wie viel Unabhängigkeit sie vom Staat genießen.​" (Verlagsinformation)

Bevölkerung, Migration, Familie, soziale Ungleichheit), sondern auch politische Themen wie Regierungssystem, Wirtschaftspolitik, Wohlfahrtsstaat, EU behandelt. Die Beiträge sind nicht didaktisch aufbereitet, aber sorgfältig in verständlichem Stil formuliert und z.T. mit Illustrationen versehen. Das Buch stellt eine gute Ergänzung zum periodisch von bpb und Statistischem Bundesamt herausgegebenen Datenreport (kostenlos bestell- und herunterladbar von der Homepage beider Institutionen) dar, der den gleichen Themenbereich anhand von Statistiken darstellt und interpretiert.
