    Abstract: When rock and roll emerged in the 1950s, ministers denounced it from their pulpits and Sunday school teachers warned of the music's demonic origins. The big beat, said Billy Graham, was "ever working in the world for evil." Yet by the early 2000s Christian rock had become a billion-dollar industry. The Devil's Music tells the story of this transformation. Rock's origins lie in part with the energetic Southern Pentecostal churches where Elvis, Little Richard, James Brown, and other pioneers of the genre worshipped as children. Randall J. Stephens shows that the music, styles, and ideas of tongue-speaking churches powerfully influenced these early performers. As rock 'n' roll's popularity grew, white preachers tried to distance their flock from this "blasphemous jungle music," with little success. By the 1960s, Christian leaders feared the Beatles really were more popular than Jesus, as John Lennon claimed. Stephens argues that in the early days of rock 'n' roll, faith served as a vehicle for whites' racial fears. A decade later, evangelical Christians were at odds with the counterculture and the antiwar movement. By associating the music of blacks and hippies with godlessness, believers used their faith to justify racism and conservative politics. But in a reversal of strategy in the early 1970s, the same evangelicals embraced Christian rock as a way to express Jesus's message within their own religious community and project it into a secular world. In Stephens's compelling narrative, the result was a powerful fusion of conservatism and popular culture whose effects are still felt today.--

    Abstract: »One must be absolutely modern!« - this premise hung like a guiding star above numerous avant-garde movements of the 1910s and '20s. From the salon to the street, from esoteric milieux into life, preferably the night-life: as border-crossers between cultural lifeworlds, in a casual suit and with a tightly clamped monocle, the new artist type headed out to proletarian boxing fights or to popular variety shows. He played in a jazz band, collected records, danced the foxtrot and the Charleston, and raised as such not just the claim of the artistic principle, but he also knew how to cleverly use proven PR strategies from the entertainment industry for his own purposes. Anke J. Hübel goes looking for traces of this amongst the protagonists of the avant-garde movements of the time, and in doing so, focuses in particular on the multilayered relationship which the artists had with the extremely popular jazz music of the time. This interdisciplinary essay is equal parts a work of media history, and of modern history more broadly. Anke J. Hübel (Dr.) hat an der Universität zu Köln, der Ruhr-Universität Bochum, der Freien Universität zu Berlin, der Universidad Complutense de Madrid und der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Kunst- und Bildgeschichte sowie Kulturwissenschaft studiert.     Abstract: Die erste Biografie Ernest Bornemans zum 100. Geburtstag des berühmten Jazzkritikers, Dokumentarfilmers und Sexualwissenschaftlers am 12. April 2015. Borneman, Jungkommunist mit jüdischem Familienhintergrund, emigrierte 1933, sechs Wochen vor dem Abitur, nach London. Sein Geld verdiente er durch Jobs in der Filmbranche, als Journalist und Schriftsteller. Während des Krieges wurde er als »feindlicher Ausländer« inhaftiert und in Kanada interniert. Dort arbeitete er ab 1941 für das National Film Board und drehte eine Reihe von Dokumentarfilmen, darunter Propagandafilme gegen das »Dritte Reich«. Gleichzeitig stieg er zu einem einflussreichen Jazzkritiker auf, der nach Kriegsende u. a. als Kolumnist des legendären »Melody Maker« arbeitete. Seit den späten 60er Jahren wurde Borneman zu einem der prominentesten Sexualwissenschaftler im deutschen Sprachraum, der die Idee der »Sexuellen Revolution« propagierte und damit Zustimmung ebenso wie Widerspruch erntete. Einer breiten Öffentlichkeit bekannt wurde er durch seine Bücher (»Das Patriarchat« 1975), Sex-Ratgeberkolumnen in der »Neuen Revue« und zahlreiche Auftritte im deutschen und österreichischen Fernsehen. Mit seinen Themen Jazz, Film und Sex bewegte sich Borneman auf Feldern, an denen die spezifischen Sinneswahrnehmungen der Moderne des 20. Jahrhunderts und die um sie entstehenden Deutungskonflikte deutlich sichtbar werden. Detlef Siegfried zeichnet Bornemans bewegtes Leben nach und stellt sein Wirken aus sinnesgeschichtlicher Perspektive dar. Auf der Basis zeichen- und medientheoretischer sowie kulturwissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse entwickelt Anna Valentine Ullrich ein Modell, um verschiedene Zitaterscheinungen zu analysieren, und berücksichtigt dabei sowohl den Prozess des Zitierens als auch das Zitatprodukt und seine Wirkungen.Anwendung findet das Modell auf Beispiele der gebauten Architektur. Die medienübergreifende Betrachtung erweitert die Zitatforschung um neue Perspektiven und diskutiert zudem Funktionen des Zitierens als Kulturtechnik

    Abstract: Noisy, confrontational, and controversial, industrial music first emerged in the mid-1970s around bands and performance groups who combined avant-garde electronic music with the provocative attitude and style of punk rock. In its early days, bands such as Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire produced a genuinely radical form of music bent on recontextualizing the signs and methods of cultural authority in an attempt to liberate listeners from the trappings of modernity. But, as industrial music took on more and more elements of popular music over the course of the 1980s it slowly abandoned its mission. By the mid-1990s, it was seen as simply another style of pop music, and had ironically fallen into the trappings it sought by its very existence to destroy. In "Assimilate", S. Alexander Reed provides the first ever critical history of this fascinating and enigmatic genre tracing industrial music's trajectory from Throbbing Gristle's founding of the record label Industrial Music in 1976, to its peak in popularity on the back of the band Nine Inch Nails in the mid-1990s, and through its decline to the present day. Through a series of revealing explorations of works spanning the entirety of industrial music's past, and drawing on extensive interviews with musicians, record label owners, DJs, and concert promoters, Reed paints a thorough historical picture that includes not only the bands, but the structures that supported them, and the scenes they created. In so doing, he reveals an engaging story of an ideological disintegration and its aftermath. The definitive text on the genre, "Assimilate" is essential reading for fans of industrial music, and scholars and students of popular music alike.

    Abstract: The phrase “spatial turns” signals the growing importance of space as an analytical as well as representational category for culture. The volume addresses such emerging modes of inquiry by bringing together, for the first time, essays that engage with spatial turns, spatiality, and the theoretical implications of both in the context of German culture, history, and theory. Migrating from fields like geography, urban studies, and architecture, the new centrality of space has transformed social-science fields as diverse as sociology, philosophy, and psychology. In cultural studies, productive analyses of space increasingly cut across the studies of literature, film, popular culture, and the visual arts. Spatial Turns brings together essays that apply a spatial analysis to German literature and other media and engages with specifically German theorizations of space by such figures as Siegfried Kracauer and Walter Benjamin. The volume is organized in four sections: “Mapping Spaces” addresses cartography in all forms and in its intersection with culture; “Spaces of the Urban” takes up one of the key sites of spatial studies, the city; “Spaces of Encounter” considers how Germany has become a contact zone for multiple ethnicities; and “Visualized Spaces” concerns the theorization of space in film and new media studies.
