Kurzfassung: "Rooted in African society and traditions, black slaves in America created a dynamic culture which lives on and keeps evolving. Present day hip hop and rap music are still shaped by the historical experience of slavery and the will to oppose oppression and racism. This volume is an authoritative introduction to the history of African Americans in U.S. popular culture, examining its development from the early nineteenth century to the present. Kurzfassung: Featuring essays by leading historians, this brief history is a timely introduction to the interrelated themes of race, ethnicity, and immigration in American history. The book is comprehensive both chronologically -- spanning from 1600 to 2000 and covering everything from the Trail of Tears to the Black Power movement -- and in terms of ethnic groups addressed: it examines not only the history of black-white relations in America, but also the experiences of Irish Catholics, Native Americans, Latinos, Jews, and many others.

Kurzfassung: This 2003 book is an important full-length study of the Portuguese royal court in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. It describes the fundamental importance of the court in defining the social position of kings, and shows how kings and nobles redefined one another, despite many celebrated political rivalries within the broader Iberian context. The book contains a detailed comparative analysis of the way royal courts were organized, and of the status, professional and gender groups inside the Portuguese court. The characteristics of the court society as a whole, however, were rooted mostly in the dynamics of hierarchy and interdependence - in the specific ways the different parts and the individuals were bonded to each other. These bonds are discussed in light of later medieval concepts and theories. The book also describes the constant displacement of this complex community within Portugal, and how life at court was shaped by ceremonial duties and common activities

This process took place within an uneven field of knowledge that brought together travel and evangelical accounts to exert a formative influence on the creation of London and India for the domestic reading public. Their distinct narratives, rhetoric and chronologies forged homologies between representations of the metropolitan poor and colonial subjects. Thus the poor and particular sections of the Indian population - seen as the most threatening to imperial progress - were inscribed within discourses of Western civilisation as regressive and inferior peoples. Over time these discourses increasingly promoted notions of over and rigid racial hierarchies, the legacy of which remains to this day." "This comparative analysis looks afresh at the writings of observers such as Henry Mayhew, Patrick Colquhoun, Charles Grant, Pierce Egan, James Forbes and Emma Roberts, thereby seeking to rethink the location of the poor and India within the nineteenth-century imagination. Drawing upon cultural and intellectual history it also attempts to extend our understanding of the relationship between 'centre' and 'periphery', and of the nature of imperial modernity." "The other empire will be of value to students and scholars of modern imperial and urban history, cultural studies, and religious studies."--Jacket , English
