Kurzfassung: This work explores a neglected aspect of the forced migration of African labourers to the Americas. Hundreds of thousands of captive Africans continued their journeys after the Middle Passage across the Atlantic. Colonial merchants purchased and then trans-shipped many of these captives to other colonies for resale. Drawing on a database of more than 7,000 intercolonial slave trading voyages compiled from port records, newspapers, and merchant accounts, the book identifies and quantifies the major routes of this intercolonial slave trade.

Kurzfassung: From the beginning of the twentieth century until World War I, about 35,000 Jews reached Palestine. Historians and social scientists have tended to apply different criteria to immigration to Palestine than those usual in the study of immigration. They have stressed the uniqueness of Jewish immigration to Palestine and the importance of Zionist ideology as a central factor in that immigration. This book seeks to present a more complex picture of both the causes of immigration to Palestine and the profile of the mass of immigrants who reached Jaffa in the years 1904-1914.

Kurzfassung: When the Nazis seized power in Germany in 1933 they promised to create a new, harmonious society under the leadership of the Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler. The concept of volksgemeinschaft - the people's community - enshrined the Nazis' vision of society; a society based on racist, social-Darwinist, anti-democratic, and nationalist thought. This book scrutinizes volksgemeinschaft as the Nazis' central vision of community.

Kurzfassung: "Caricatured for extravagance, vanity, glamorous celebrity and, all too often, embroiled in scandal and gossip, 18th-century London's fashionable society had a well-deserved reputation for frivolity. But to be fashionable in 1700s London meant more than simply being well dressed. Fashion denoted membership of a new type of society - the beau monde, a world where status was no longer determined by coronets and countryseats alone but by the more nebulous qualification of metropolitan 'fashion'. Conspicuous consumption and display were crucial; the right address, the right dinner guests, the right possessions, the right jewels, the right seat at the opera. The Beau Monde leads us on a tour of this exciting new world, from court and parliament to London's parks, pleasure grounds, and private homes." -- Publisher website

Kurzfassung: In this volume, the Harlem Renaissance 'escapes from New York' into its proper global context. The chapters here recover the broader New Negro experience as social movements, popular cultures, and public behaviour spanned the globe from New York to New Orleans, from Paris to the Philippines and beyond. This book does not so much map the many sites of this early twentieth-century Black internationalism as it draws attention to how New Negroes and their global allies already lived.

Kurzfassung: A peasant revolt in Sicily is the starting point for a detailed intimate account of the people who lived in the community - a fiercely proud local gentry and a British family, the largest landowners in the area. The story is used to examine Britain's policy towards Europe in the 19th century and colonial rule overseas in the age of Empire.

Kurzfassung: In 1761 and again in 1769, European scientists raced around the world to observe the transit of Venus, a rare astronomical event in which the planet Venus passes in front of the sun. This book explores how indigeneity functions as transit, a trajectory of movement that serves as precedent within U.S. imperial history. The book argues that contemporary U.S. empire expands itself through a transferable 'Indianness' that facilitates acquisitions of lands, territories, and resources.

Kurzfassung: Based on archival and primary sources in various languages, this book examines the Jews' religious, social, and political status in 19th century Iran. Focussing on Nasir al-Din Shah's reign (1848-1896), it is a comprehensive scholarly attempt to weave all these threads into a single tapestry. This case study of the Jewish minority illuminates broader processes pertaining to other religious minorities and Iranian society in general, and the interaction among intervening foreigners, the Shi'i majority, and local Jews helps us understand Iranian dilemmas that have persisted well beyond the second half of the nineteenth century.

Kurzfassung: Magic and Impotence in the Middle Ages investigates the common medieval belief that magic could cause impotence, focusing particularly on the period 1150-1450. The subject has never been studied in detail before, but there is a surprisingly large amount of information about it in four kinds of source: confessors' manuals; medical compendia that discussed many illnesses; commentaries on canon law; and theological commentaries on the Sentences of Peter Lombard. Although most historians of medieval culture focus on only one or two of these kinds of source, a broader comparison reveals that mediev

Kurzfassung: In 1991 in lower Manhattan construction workers discovered the remains of an 18th century 'Negro Burial Ground'. Closed in 1790 and covered over by later roads and buildings, the site turned out to be the largest such find in North America, containing the remains of as many as 20,000 African Americans. The graves revealed to New Yorkers and the nation an aspect of American history long hidden: the vast number of enslaved blacks who laboured to create America's largest city. 'In the Shadow of Slavery' lays bare this history of African Americans in New York City from 1626 to 1863.

It draws on a rich mix of evidence to offer an important reconceptualism of women's role in aristocratic society, and in doing so suggests new ways of looking at lordship.

This is the first book to tell their story. From Seneca Falls, New York to Paris, from London to small towns in Germany, early feminists united to fight for the cause of women. At the height of the Victorian period, they insisted their sex deserved full political equality, called for a new kind of marriage based on companionship, claimed the right to divorce and to get custody of their children, and argued that an unjust economic system forced women into poorly paid jobs. They rejected the traditional view that women's subordination was preordained, natural, and universal. Now, restoring these daring activists' achievements to history, this work passes on their inspiring and empowering message to today's new generation of feminists.--From publisher description
