    Abstract: South Sudan became Africa's newest nation in 2011, following decades of armed conflict. Chiefs - or 'traditional authorities' - became a particular focus of attention during the international relief effort and post-war reconstruction and state-building. But 'traditional' authority in South Sudan has been much misunderstood. Institutions of chiefship were created during the colonial period but originated out of a much longer process of dealing with predatory external forces. This book addresses a significant paradox in African studies more widely: if chiefs were the product of colonial states, why have they survived or revived in recent decades? By examining the long-term history of chiefship in the vicinity of three towns, the book also argues for a new approach to the history of towns in South Sudan. Towns have previously been analysed as the loci of alien state power, yet the book demonstrates that these government centres formed an expanding urban frontier, on which people actively sought knowledge and resources of the state. Chiefs mediated relations on and across this frontier, and in the process chiefship became central to constituting both the state and local communities. Cherry Leonardi is a Lecturer in African History at the University of Durham, a former course director of the Rift Valley Institute's Sudan course, and a member of the council of the British Institute in Eastern Africa. Wie gestaltet sich die Gesellschaft im modernen Königtum in Afrika und mit welchen Mitteln und Medien regiert der König?Raphaela von Weichs' ethnologische Studie verknüpft auf innovative Weise zentrale Debatten der politischen Anthropologie mit aktuellen Ansätzen der Medien- und Religionsforschung. Sie haben durch ihre politische und gesellschaftliche Einflussnahme aber zu Prozessen der Erosion autoritärer Herrschaft und zur Demokratisierung beigetragen.     Abstract: Zusammenfassung: The integration of immigrants into a larger society begins at the local level. Turkish Berlin reveals how integration has been experienced by second-generation Turkish immigrant women in two neighborhoods in Berlin, Germany. While the neighborhoods are similar demographically, the lived experience of the residents is surprisingly different. Informed by first-person interviews with both public officials and immigrants, Annika Marlen Hinze makes clear that local integration policies--often created by officials who have little or no contact with immigrants--have significant effects on the assimilation of outsiders into a community and a society. Focusing on the Turkish neighborhoods of Kreuzberg and Neukölln, Hinze shows how a combination of local policy making and grassroots organizing have contributed to one neighborhood earning a reputation as a hip, multicultural success story and the other as a rougher neighborhood featuring problem schools and high rates of unemployment. Aided by her interviews, she describes how policy makers draw from their imaginations of urban space, immigrants, and integration to develop policies that do not always take social realities into consideration. She offers useful examples of how official policies can actually exacerbate the problems they are trying to help solve and demonstrates that a powerful history of grassroots organizing and resistance can have an equally strong impact on political outcomes

    Abstract: With the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, a third of the world's population came to live under communist regimes. Over the next forty years, the lives of most people in the non-communist world were also shaped in some way by communism and the Cold War waged against it. In the cases of many artists, intellectuals and workers, this involvement was wished and active. Yet, while the left-leaning tendencies of western artists have long been recognised, the extent and depth of musicians' involvement in communism specifically has been largely ignored, suppressed, or dismissed as youthful infatuation. The present volume offers, for the first time, a representative overview of the relationship of music and communism outside the communist bloc. Ranging across multiple musical genres, five continents, and seven decades, the nineteen chapters address both prominent musicians who aligned themselves with communism, and the investments in music of a range of communist and radical Marxist organisations (including national Communist Parties, the Black Panther Party, and Maoist and Trotskyist groups in Britain, Germany and Nepal). In the book's first section, five musicians (Giacomo Manzoni, Ernie Lieberman, Konrad Boehmer, Chris Cutler and Georgina Born) offer their own, more personal perspectives upon their engagement with communism. The volume as a whole highlights two 'red strains' in particular: the irreducible differences of opinion between communists regarding key debates concerning music's role in society; and the multiple challenges faced by every engaged musician in reconciling political and artistic agendas.     Abstract: Main description: Krieg ist ein globales Phänomen, doch Kriegserinnerung und Gefallenengedenken sind in jedem Land unterschiedlich. In 20 Länderstudien loten die Autoren aus, wie historische Traditionen, religiöse Prägungen und politische Ordnungen sich auf die Erinnerungsmuster des neuzeitlichen Gefallenenkults auswirken. Trotz vieler Unterschiede zwischen den einzelnen Ländern treten zwei Gemeinsamkeiten klar hervor: Alle Gefallenen werden politisch in Dienst genommen, um das eigene Staatswesen mit dem Tod der Soldaten zu legitimieren. Zugleich individualisiert sich in allen Nationalstaaten das Gefallenengedenken, das jeden Soldaten einzeln mit seinem Namen und als gleichberechtigten Teil der Nation darstellt. Nur religiöse und revolutionäre Märtyrerkulte sperren sich gegen diese Egalisierungstendenz.

    Abstract: Die ‚Integrationsdebatte‘ nach Thilo Sarrazins Buch ‚Deutschland schafft sich ab‘ offenbarte ein Paradox – eine wachsende Akzeptanz des kulturellen Pluralismus, besonders unter jüngeren Menschen, und zugleich massive kulturelle Ressentiments in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft. Der renommierte Migrationsforscher und Politikberater Klaus J. Bade beleuchtet Ursachen, Hintergründe und bedrohliche Folgen dieser paradoxen Spannung. Ihr Ergebnis ist eine gefährliche Ersatzdebatte anstelle der verdrängten Diskussion um die neue Identität in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft. Das Buch beschreibt diese Ersatzdebatte als ‚negative Integration‘: die Selbstvergewisserung der Mehrheit durch die Ausgrenzung einer großen – muslimischen – Minderheit. Die Politik verkennt die Brisanz dieser negativen Integration, solange sie ‚Integrationspolitik‘ nicht als Gesellschaftspolitik für alle versteht. Mit scharfem Blick identifiziert Bade Zusammenhänge von Wortgewalt und Tatgewalt am Beispiel antimultikulturell und antiislamisch motivierter Bluttaten aus jüngster Zeit: dem Breivik-Massaker in Norwegen und den Serienmorden des Nationalsozialistischen Untergrunds (NSU) in Deutschland. Mit der Zunahme von Integrationserfolgen und der pragmatischen Akzeptanz kultureller Vielfalt sind in Deutschland auch aus kultureller Angst geborene fremdenfeindliche Abwehrhaltungen gewachsen, vor allem gegenüber dem Schreckgespenst Islam. Im Umgang mit den Themen Einwanderung, Integration und Islam ist ein kritischer Punkt erreicht.

    Abstract: Krieg ist ein globales Phänomen, doch die Kriegserinnerungen und das Gefallenengedenken sind in jedem Land unterschiedlich. In 20 Länderstudien loten die Autoren aus, wie historische Traditionen, religiöse Prägungen und politische Ordnungen sich auf die Erinnerungsmuster des neuzeitlichen Gefallenenkults auswirken. Trotz vieler Unterschiede zwischen den einzelnen Ländern treten zwei Gemeinsamkeiten klar hervor: Alle Gefallenen werden politisch in Dienst genommen, um das eigene Staatswesen mit dem Tod der Soldaten zu legitimieren. Zugleich individualisiert sich in allen Nationalstaaten das Gefallenengedenken, das jeden Soldaten einzeln mit seinem Namen und als gleichberechtigten Teil der Nation darstellt. Nur religiöse und revolutionäre Märtyrerkulte sperren sich gegen diese Egalisierungstendenz
