Jahrhunderts. Seine literatursoziologischen Analysen sind noch immer höchst aktuelle Beiträge zur Konstitution einer Literaturwissenschaft, die sich zunehmend als Kulturwissenschaft versteht.

Combining stylistic brilliance with unsparing criticism of one-sided interpretations, Köhler situates Chrestien de Troyes' courtly romances in the social and literary context of the 12th and 13th centuries. With their emphasis on the sociology of literature, Köhler's analyses have lost nothing of their immediate relevance for the constitution of an approach to literature that increasingly defines literary criticism in terms of cultural studies.

    Kurzfassung: Main description: Die Arbeit zeigt, daß interkulturelle Kommunikation nicht - wie gemeinhin angenommen - notwendigerweise problematisch ist. Mittels Mikroanalysen authentischer Dissenssequenzen wird nachgewiesen, daß Gesprächsteilnehmer in deutsch-dänischen Verhandlungen über nationale, kulturelle und sprachliche Unterschiede hinweg im Stande sind, selbst potenziell problematische Sequenzen zu meistern. Dies verdeutlicht, daß es einer stärkeren Differenzierung des Feldes interkulturelle Kommunikation bedarf, um der Komplexität des Untersuchungsgegenstandes gerecht zu werden.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: The study shows that, contrary to received thinking on the point, intercultural communication is not necessarily problematic. Micro-analyses of authentic dissent sequences show that, despite their national, cultural, and linguistic differences, participants in German-Danish negotiations are capable of mastering even potentially problematic sequences. This points the necessity for a more differentiated approach to the field of intercultural communication if justice is to be done to the complexity of the subject.

    Kurzfassung: Räumliche Mobilität ist eine Signatur der modernen Weltgesellschaft, und die Zahl derjenigen, die ihre Heimat verlassen, um für eine begrenzte Zeit im Ausland zu leben und zu arbeiten, nimmt stetig zu. Obwohl die Gruppe der so genannten »Expatriates« im Globalisierungsprozess unbestritten eine Schlüsselposition einnimmt, sind ihre besonderen Lebensbedingungen bislang kaum untersucht worden. Die Studie »Heimat auf Zeit« beleuchtet die bei den »Expats« vorgefundenen praktischen Dimensionen von Globalisierung im Alltag am Beispiel der syrischen Hauptstadt Damaskus. Dabei entsteht ein detailreiches Bild der global-lokalen Expat-Gemeinschaft und der individuellen Anstrengungen von Frauen, für sich und ihre Familien eine »Heimat auf Zeit« zu schaffen

    Kurzfassung: "Why have forced displacement, ethnic cleansing and genocide been an enduring feature of the modern state system? In this ground-breaking book, Heather Rae locates these practices of 'pathological homogenisation' in the processes of state-building. Political elites have repeatedly used available cultural resources to redefine bounded political communities as exclusive moral communities, from which outsiders must be expelled. Showing that these practices predate the age of nationalism, Rae examines cases from both the pre-nationalist and nationalist eras: the expulsion of the Jews from fifteenth-century Spain, the persecution of the Huguenots under Louis XIV and, in the twentieth century, the Armenian genocide and the ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia. She argues that those atrocities have prompted the development of international norms of legitimate state behaviour that increasingly define sovereignty as conditional. Rae concludes by examining two 'threshold' cases - the Czech Republic and Macedonia - to identify the factors that may inhibit pathological homogenisation as a method of state-building."--Jacket

    Kurzfassung: Plants and animals originally domesticated in the Near East arrived in Europe between 7000 and 4000 BC. Was the new technology introduced by migrants, or was it an 'inside job'? How were the new species adapted to European conditions? What were the immediate and long-term consequences of the transition from hunting and gathering to farming? These central questions in the prehistory of Europe are discussed here by leading specialists, drawing on scholarship in fields as diverse as genetics and IndoEuropean linguistics.     Kurzfassung: Main description: Anhand der Untersuchung von Vorwurfsaktivitäten ("in situ Vorwürfe", "Frotzeleien" und Rekonstruktionen vergangener Vorwurfsinteraktionen in "Beschwerdegeschichten") werden prosodische, grammatische, rhetorisch-stilistische Verfahren und deren Funktionen in ihrer alltäglichen Verwendung erforscht. Nach einer Analyse der Konstitution dieser Vorwurfsgattungen werden Konsequenzen für eine Theorie kommunikativer Praxis gezogen und Aspekte, wie die gattungsspezifische Funktion grammatischer Strukturen, die Interaktion prosodischer und syntaktischer Verfahren bei der Herstellung kommunikativer Bedeutung und die Rolle indexikalischer Zeichen bei der Bedeutungsaushandlung diskutiert.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: On the basis of a study of reproach activities ('in situ reproaches', 'mock reproaches' and reconstructions of previous reproach interactions in 'complaint stories') the monograph examines prosodic, grammatical, rhetorical/stylistic processes and their functions in everyday usage. Following an analysis of the constitution of these reproach genres the study charts the consequences for a theory of communicative practice and discusses aspects such as the genre-specific function of grammatical structures, the interaction between prosodic and syntactic procedures in the production of communicative meaning, and the role of indexical signs in the negotiation of meaning.

    Kurzfassung: Feminist analysis shows that the prevailing concepts of citizenship often assume a male citizen. How, then, does this affect the agency and participation of women in modern democracies? This insightful book, first published in 2000, presents a systematic comparison of the links between women's social rights and democratic citizenship in three different citizenship models: republican citizenship in France, liberal citizenship in Britain, and social citizenship in Denmark. Birte Siim argues that France still suffers from the contradictions of pro-natalist policy, and that Britain is only just starting to re-conceptualise the male-breadwinner model that is still a dominant feature. In her examination of the dual-breadwinner model in Denmark, Siim presents research about Scandinavian social policy and makes an important and timely contribution to debates in political sociology, social policy and gender studies

    Anmerkung: Description based upon print version of record , Main description: Der Ausgangspunkt der Studie bildet die Frage, wie Zugehörigkeit zu sozialen Gruppen kommunikativ zur Geltung gebracht wird. Diese Frage wird anhand eines umfangreichen Korpus authentischer Gesprächsaufzeichnungen aus den Jahren nach der deutschen Wiedervereinigung beantwortet. "Ost-" und "Westdeutsch" sind dabei die sozialen Kategorien, anhand derer empirisch erarbeitet wird, wie Personen zu Gruppen zugeordnet und wie damit und darüber hinaus gruppenspezifische Eigenschaften und Verhaltensweisen zugeschrieben und bewertet werden. Das Hauptergebnis der Studie ist ein linguistischer Beschreibungsrahmen für soziale Kategorisierungen in Gesprächen und Texten , Main description: The study proceeds from an inquiry into the way in which affiliation to social groups is signalized communicatively. The question is examined on the basis of a large corpus of authentic verbal exchanges (conversations) recorded in the years following German reunification. 'East German' and 'West German' are the social categories forming the basis for the empirical elaboration of how individuals are allocated to group(ing)s and how - both on the basis of that allocation and beyond it - group-specific characteristics and behaviours are ascribed and evaluated.
