Abstract: 'Aloha' is at once the most significant and the most misunderstood word in the indigenous Hawaiian lexicon. For Kanaka Maoli people, the concept of 'aloha' is a representation and articulation of their identity, despite its misappropriation and commandeering by non-native audiences in the form of things like the 'hula girl' of popular culture. Considering the way aloha is embodied, performed, and interpreted in native Hawaiian literature, music, plays, dance, drag performance, and even ghost tours from the twentieth century to the present, Stephanie Nohelani Teves shows that misunderstanding of the concept by non-native audiences has not prevented the Kanaka Maoli from using it to create and empower community and articulate its distinct Indigenous meaning.

The original Baby Dolls were groups of black women, & some men, in the early Jim Crow era who adopted New Orleans street-masking tradition as a unique form of fun & self-expression against a backdrop of racial discrimination. Wearing short dresses, bloomers, bonnets, & garters with money tucked tight, they strutted, sang ribald songs, chanted, & danced on Mardi Gras Day & on St. Joseph feast night. Today's Baby Dolls continue the tradition of one of the first street women's masking & marching groups in the United States. They joyfully & unabashedly defy gender roles, claiming public space & proclaiming through their performance their right to social citizenship.

However, up to now, there has been no in-depth inquiry into what he meant when he said 'I Figure Singing and Playing is the Same,' or 'Singing was more into my blood than the trumpet.' This text shows that Armstrong understood exactly the relationship between what he sang and what he played, and that he meant these comments to be taken literally: he was singing through his horn. Abstract: Studies of immigration to the United States have traditionally focused on a few key states and urban centers, but recent shifts in nonwhite settlement mean that these studies no longer paint the whole picture. Many Latinx newcomers are flocking to places like the Southeast, where traditionally few such immigrants have settled, resulting in rapidly redrawn communities. In this historic moment, Jennifer Jones brings forth an ethnographic look at changing racial identities in one Southern city: Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This city turns out to be a natural experiment in race relations, having quickly shifted in the past few decades from a neatly black and white community to a triracial one.

Abstract: In 2007, while researching mountain culture in upstate South Carolina, anthropologist John M. Coggeshall stumbled upon the small community of Liberia in the Blue Ridge foothills. There he met Mable Owens Clarke and her family, the remaining members of a small African American community still living on land obtained immediately after the Civil War. This intimate history tells the story of five generations of the Owens family and their friends and neighbors, chronicling their struggles through slavery, Reconstruction, the Jim Crow era, and the desegregation of the state. Through hours of interviews with Mable and her relatives, as well as friends and neighboyrs, Coggeshall presents an ethnographic history that allows members of a largely ignored community to speak and record their own history for the first time.

Abstract: For Leonard Bernstein, music was a language capable of communicating more directly than in words, and jazz was a crucial part of his musical vocabulary. As an idiom made up of a range of styles - whether stride, boogie-woogie, swing, bebop, or cool - jazz was central to Bernstein's compositional aesthetic, particularly in his approach to tonality and to defining American music. The blues, as a special part of this jazz idiom, also helped Bernstein articulate a personal identity, expressing everything from sensuality to humor to loss and isolation. This text will examine the shifting meanings of Bernstein's jazz language in theatrical and symphonic works from across his career.

Abstract: This ethnography examines songwriters Bill and Gloria Gaithers' Homecoming video and concert series. The Homecomings re-present the 'southern gospel' subgenre of gospel music - a musical style popular among white evangelical Christians in the American South and Midwest. The text explores how the Gaithers negotiate the tension between preservation and modification of community norms as they seek simultaneously to maintain and expand their audience, and to initiate and respond to ideological shifts within their fan base's culture. Using data he collected from his immersion in the Homecoming catalogue, his attendance of numerous concerts and tapings, and his extensive conversations with Homecoming fans and the Gaithers themselves, Harper reveals the Homecomings to be a crucible of American religious, racial, sexual and regional identity formation.

Abstract: Social critiques argue that social media have made us narcissistic, that Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube are all vehicles for me-promotion. In this book, Lee Humphreys offers a different view. She shows that sharing the mundane details of our lives - what we ate for lunch, where we went on vacation, who dropped in for a visit - didn't begin with mobile devices and social media. People have used media to catalog and share their lives for several centuries. Pocket diaries, photo albums, and baby books are the predigital precursors of today's digital and mobile platforms for posting text and images. Abstract: Considering yodeling as a musical device in American music, this text investigates in parallel two ways of understanding various meanings associated with yodeling: as the connotative functions of yodeling within specific musical texts and as the ideological implications of its use. It aims to provoke a reflection on the concept of singing and received cultural ideas associated with it. Starting with the premise that music is a discursive practice that is itself inseparable from a critical verbal discourse about music, the work interrogates the relationship between yodeling and predominating musical orthodoxy. Through a critical examination of that relationship, the book explores numerous examples of yodeling in American music, questioning why it achieved prominence and status in some genres and not in others and attempting to account for the relatively low prestige accorded to music featuring yodeling.

Abstract: In 1991, Anita Hill brought testimony and scandal into America's living rooms during televised Senate confirmation hearings in which she detailed the sexual harassment she had suffered at the hands of Clarence Thomas. The male Senate Judiciary Committee refused to take Hill seriously, and the veracity of Hill's claims were sullied in the mainstream media. Hill was defamed as a little bit nutty and a little bit slutty, and Thomas was confirmed. The tainting of Hill and her testimony are part of a larger social history in which women find themselves caught up in a system that refuses to believe what they say. The Anita Hill case shows how a tainted witness is not who someone is, but what someone can become. 'Tainted Witness' elucidates how persistent and pernicious patterns of doubt attach to women who bring forward accounts of sexual and racial violence.

Abstract: Paid home care sits at the nexus of two of the United States' biggest social challenges: rising inequality and an aging population. Policy and advocacy initiatives typically treat poverty and care of the aged as distinct forms of vulnerability. They are seen as having separate social causes that require different solutions. Using rich ethnographic narrative based on fieldwork in Chicago, this text examines the diverse relationships generated by care and their connections to longer national histories, policies, and institutional contexts.

Abstract: Innovations in postbop jazz compositions of the 1960s occurred in several dimensions, including harmony, form, and melody. Postbop jazz composers such as Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, along with others (Booker Little, Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw) broke with earlier tonal jazz traditions. Their compositions marked a departure from the techniques of jazz standards and original compositions that defined small-group repertory through the 1950s: single-key orientation, schematic 32-bar frameworks (in AABA or ABAC forms), and tonal harmonic progressions. The text develops analytical pathways through a number of compositions, including 'El Gaucho,' 'Penelope,' 'Pinocchio,' 'Face of the Deep' (Shorter); 'King Cobra,' 'Dolphin Dance,' 'Jessica' (Hancock); 'Windows,' 'Inner Space,' 'Song of the Wind' (Corea); as well as 'We Speak' (Little); 'Punjab' (Henderson); and 'Beyond All Limits' (Shaw).

Abstract: Myanmar's Rohingya Muslims have been subject to human rights abuses, been denied citizenship, and most recently, faced ethnic cleansing. Well over half the Rohingya population who use to live in Myanmar have been displaced by violence, with over a million Rohingya refugees now sheltering in Bangladesh. This conflict has become a litmus test for change in Myanmar, a country in transition, and current assessments are far from positive. This book explores this long-running tripartite conflict between the Rohingya, Rakhine and Burman ethnic groups, and offers a new analysis of the complexities of the conflict.

Yet people experience the effects of digital devices and algorithms in their everyday lives also through the lenses of magic and the supernatural. Abstract: We all know that speech can be harmful. But what are the harms and how exactly does the speech in question brings those harms about? Mary Kate McGowan identifies a previously overlooked mechanism by which speech constitutes, rather than merely causes, harm. She argues that speech constitutes harm when it enacts a norm that prescribes that harm. McGowan illustrates this theory by considering many categories of speech including sexist remarks, racist hate speech, pornography, verbal triggers for stereotype threat, micro-aggressions, political dog whistles, slam poetry, and even the hanging of posters. 'Just Words' explores a variety of harms - such as oppression, subordination, discrimination, domination, harassment, and marginalisation - and ways in which these harms can be remedied.
