Abstract: 〈DIV〉 In this groundbreaking new book, 〈i〉Mexican Hometown Associations in Chicagoacán〈/i〉, Xóchitl Bada reveals how Mexican hometown associations, groups consisting of immigrants from the same small towns, have become a surprisingly powerful force for mobilizing social change in both the United States and Mexico. By giving voice to the members of a group of Chicago-based hometown associations from the state of Michoacán, Xóchitl Bada draws much larger conclusions about the emergence and global impact of new transnational forms of community activism. 〈/div〉...

Abstract: 〈DIV〉Genocide not only annihilates people but also destroys and reorganizes social relations, using terror as a method. In 〈I〉Genocide as Social Practice〈/I〉, Argentinean social scientist Daniel Feierstein looks at the policies of state-sponsored repression pursued by the Argentine military dictatorship against political opponents between 1976 and 1983 and those pursued by the Third Reich between 1933 and 1945. He finds similarities, not in the extent of the horror but in terms of the goals of the perpetrators.〈BR〉〈BR〉〈BR〉〈/div〉...

Abstract: 〈DIV〉In this provocative new book, Maria Acosta Cruz investigates why the rhetoric of independence is so pivotal to Puerto Rican culture, despite the fact that the island's voters have consistently rejected calls for national sovereignty. Weaving together texts from literature, history, and popular culture, 〈i〉Dream Nation〈/i〉 shows how this seemingly revolutionary and populist iconography of independence has become an established orthodoxy. 〈BR〉〈BR〉〈BR〉〈/div〉...

Abstract: In the early twentieth century, arguments between "nature" and "nurture" pitted a rigid genetic determinism against the idea that genes were flexible and open to environmental change. This book tells the story of three Viennese biologists who sought to show how the environment could shape heredity through the impact of hormones and explores the dynamic of failure in science through both scientific and social lenses.

He considers a range of family configurations from biblical times to the twenty-first century, including strictly Orthodox communities and new forms of family, including same-sex parents, and suggests productive ways to think about possible futures for Jewish family forms. 〈/div〉...

Abstract: In-depth interviews with participants in non-traditional families are used to argue that same-sex marriage cannot be understood as simply entrenching or contesting heterosexual privilege. Instead, Katrina Kimport contends that these new legally sanctioned relationships can both reinforce as well as disrupt the association of marriage and heterosexuality. She provides a nuanced, accessible, and theoretically grounded framework for understanding the powerful effect of heterosexual expectations on both sexual and social categories.

Abstract: Amigas y Amantes (Friends and Lovers) explores the experiences of sexually nonconforming Latinas in the creation and maintenance of families. It is based on forty-two in-depth enthnographic interviews with women who identify as lesbian, bisexual, or queer (LBQ) and draws from fourteen months of participant observation at LBQ Latina events that Katie L. Acosta conducted in 2007 and 2008 in a major northeast city. The book examines how LBQ Latinas manage loving relationships with the families who raised them, and with their partners, their children, and their friends. ...

Abstract: The work and family lives of Mexican American women in a community near the U.S.-Mexico border in California's Imperial County are examined. Wells provides stories of the struggles, triumphs, and everyday experiences of these women and explores the social structures that create the barriers, constraints, and opportunities that have shaped their lives. These women aspire to achieve the American Dream, but the realities of life in a rural, agricultural border community strictly limit social mobility for these descendants of immigrant farm laborers.

Abstract: In Honor Bound, David Leverenz argues that in the United States, the rise and decline of white people's racial shaming reflects the rise and decline of white honor. To explore the implications of this argument, he casts an unusually wide net, from ancient and modern cultures of honor to social,  political, and military history to American literature and popular culture.

Abstract: Luis F. B. Plascencia's Disenchanting Citizenship explores two interrelated issues: U.S. citizenship and the Mexican migrants' position in the United States. Through an extensive and multifaceted collection of interviews, ethnographic fieldwork, ethno-historical research, and public policy analysis, Plascencia probes the ways in which citizenshiop discourses are understood and taken up by individuals. The book uncovers citizenship's root as a Janus-faced construct that encompasses a simultaneous process of inclusion and exclusion. This notion of citizenship is mapped on to the migrant experience, arguing that the acquisition of citizenship can lead to disenchantment with the very status desired. Using the experience of Mexican migrants, Plascencia expands the understanding of the dynamics of U.S. citizenship as a form of membership and belonging.

Abstract: In The Feminine Mystique, Jewish-raised Betty Friedan struck out against a postwar American culture that pressured women to play the role of subservient housewives. However, Friedan never acknowledged that many American women refused to retreat from public life during these years. Now, A Jewish Feminine Mystique? examines how Jewish women sought opportunities and created images that defied the stereotypes and prescriptive ideology of the ""feminine mystique."" Focusing on ordinary Jewish women as well as prominent figures, leading scholars explore the wide canvas upon which Americ...

Abstract: America's approach to terrorism has focused on traditional national security methods under the assumption that terrorism's roots are foreign and the solution to greater security lies in conventional military practices. Europe offers a different model, with its response to internal terrorism relying on police procedures. Managing Ethnic Diversity after 9/11 compares these strategies and considers that both may have engendered greater radicalization-and a greater chance of home-grown terrorism. ...

Based primarily on women's experiential narratives and set against the backdrop of a severe economic crisis and intensified social movement activism post-2001, Bodies in Crisis illuminates how multiple forms of injustice converge in and are contested through women's bodies and suggests that social policy, economic systems, cultural ideologies, and political resistance are ultimately fleshly matters

Abstract: Misframing Men, a collection of Michael Kimmel's commentaries on contemporary debates about masculinity, argues that the media have largely misframed this debate. Kimmel, among the world's best-known scholars in gender studies, discusses political moments, takes on antifeminists as the real male bashers, questions the unsubstantiated assertions that men suffer from domestic violence to the same degree as women, and examines the claims made by those who want to rescue boys from the "misandrous" reforms initiated by feminism. In writings both solidly grounded and forcefully argued, Kimmel pushes the boundaries of today's modern conversation about men and masculinity

Abstract: New Blood offers a fresh interdisciplinary look at feminism-in-flux. For over three decades, menstrual activists have questioned the safety and necessity of feminine care products while contesting menstruation as a deeply entrenched taboo. Chris Bobel shows how a little-known yet enduring force in the feminist health, environmental, and consumer rights movements lays bare tensions between second- and third-wave feminisms and reveals a complicated story of continuity and change within the women's movement.
