    Kurzfassung: The business environment of the chaebol (large corporations in Korea) has changed drastically since the outbreak of the 1997 Asian financial crisis. This book discusses the attempts of the Korean government to remedy structural weaknesses in the corporate sector by launching an aggressive chaebol reform package, supported by the IMF and other international agencies. Its main objective was to restore competitiveness in the corporate sector and to upgrade business conditions to that of international practices and standards. Competition and Corporate Governance in Korea critically reviews government policy towards the chaebol and provides a comprehensive investigation of the relationship between corporate governance and economic performance as well as the interaction of economic institutions with the chaebols' incentive structure and management behaviour. Policy implications based on objective and rigorous empirical analyses of data on the chaebol are also discussed. Notwithstanding the fact that the chaebol have already undergone considerable governance, capital, and business portfolio restructuring, this volume suggests a road map for further restructuring, and the creation of a new incentive structure to help strengthen chaebol competitiveness. This richly informative book will appeal to academics and researchers of industrial organization, economics and corporate reform as well as those involved in Asian studies

    Kurzfassung: This book is an in-depth, cutting-edge report on the intergenerational ambivalence perspective: an innovative framework for understanding parent-adult child relationships that has emerged from work in several disciplines such as sociology, psychology, history, and family therapy in the US and Europe over the past ten years. It is an excellent starting point for anyone interested in the ambivalent feelings experienced between adult children and their parents. With dramatic increases in the life span, many people now have adult relationships with their parents that last 30, 40, or even more years. These intergenerational bonds are perhaps the most stable and enduring ties people experience in our rapidly changing world. At the same time, social norms for how these relationships "should" be conducted have weakened, and many parents and adult children are struggling to understand their roles and responsibilities toward one another. Studying the nature and dynamics of intergenerational ties has now become a key task for social scientists, and a remarkably vigorous area for research. The perspective offered here draws on theory and research that highlight ambivalence as a key organizing concept for the study of intergenerational relations. Rather than focusing on consensus and support on one hand, or conflict on the other, this volume reveals parent-adult child relationships as a complex mix of positive and negative emotions, thoughts and attitudes. This volume's 13 chapters lay out the conceptual and methodological framework for this new perspective, and report on a number of empirical studies. The multidisciplinary group of leading researchers examines core dilemmas facing parents and adult children in the new millennium, the ambivalence such dilemmas create, and how people manage and cope with it

    Kurzfassung: American cities are today more diverse than at any time in history. The continuing flow of new immigrants has settled in urban and suburban areas that have undergone visible change in population and neighborhoods. While Chicago long served as the convenient and well-studied model for urban sociology, for many Los Angeles has become the focal point for study of the postmodern heteropolis. It is interesting that for sociologists New York City, especially its outer boroughs such as Brooklyn and Queens, has largely remained outside the intense gaze of urban study. As the nation's largest city New York has long had a mosaic of social worlds comparable to that of Chicago, and displays an ethnic diversity comparable to that of Los Angeles. Because New York City presents us with a less easily recognizable mosaic and a more free form scattering of ethnic social spaces, it is seldom thought of as a pre or post-modern "model" for other metropolitan areas. The eight articles presented in this volume represent both older and established ethnic and racial communities as well as new and emerging groups in New York City. These include Italian communities, African American, as well as newer Jewish, Caribbean, and Asian groups

    Kurzfassung: Eastern Europe has been recognized as a region that has experienced major socio-political and economic changes in the last decades. It is a reader appropriate for use in courses and seminars on families and cultural diversity.     Kurzfassung: This 2004 book showcases research and theory about the way in which the social environment shapes, and is shaped by, emotion. The book has three sections, each of which addresses a different level of sociality: interpersonal, intragroup, and intergroup. The first section refers to the links between specific individuals, the second to categories that define multiple individuals as an entity, and the final to the boundaries between groups. Emotions are found in each of these levels and the dynamics involved in these types of relationship are part of what it is to experience emotion. The chapters show how all three types of social relationships generate, and are generated by, emotions. In doing so, this book locates emotional experiences in the larger social context

    Kurzfassung: Ob Körperbewegung oder Tanzbewegung, ob Bewegung der Bilder, der Töne oder der Schrift, ob soziale oder politische Bewegung, der Begriff »Bewegung« wird in Ästhetik, Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften häufig benutzt. Anders als in den Naturwissenschaften aber ist dem konzeptuellen Stellenwert des Bewegungsbegriffs in den Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften bislang nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt worden.Die interdisziplinäre Textsammlung verfolgt das Ziel, den Status quo des Begriffs in den Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften zu reflektieren und sein theoretisches Potenzial zu bestimmen. Sie geht von der Annahme aus, dass Bewegung nicht nur eine »physikalische Tatsache« und damit etwas quasi Natürliches ist, sondern ein soziales und kulturelles Konzept, das auf verschiedene Weise naturalisiert und essenzialisiert worden ist. Der Band präsentiert verschiedene Gebrauchsweisen des Begriffs und ermöglicht damit ein weiteres konzeptuelles Nachdenken über Bewegung als einen Begriff, dessen Rolle im »Tanz der Disziplinen« neu zu entfalten ist

    Kurzfassung: Zwar ist in den letzten Jahren der Konsens gewachsen, dass Deutschland ein Einwanderungsland ist, aber der Blick auf Migranten hat sich dadurch nicht wesentlich geändert. Auf der Basis des Paradigmas kultureller Differenz gelten sie nach wie vor als die Anderen, die Fremden. Doch die Fremdheit der Migranten als eine Prämisse der Debatte über Einwanderung in Deutschland verstellt den Blick für eine sehr vielfältige und gar nicht unbedingt fremde Lebenswirklichkeit. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes nun stellen diese Prämisse in Frage. Sie untersuchen, wie in den Diskursen von Gesellschaft, Politik und Wissenschaft die kulturelle Differenz vor allem der Einwanderer aus der Türkei immer wieder festgeschrieben wird und diskutieren anhand neuer theoretischer Zugänge alternative Perspektiven. Damit bereichert der Band die gegenwärtige Diskussion um Migration um notwendige innovative Positionen

    Kurzfassung: Saints, their places, the rituals of their veneration - the heroes and martyrs they represent or to whom they are often connected with - and the beliefs in their powers have often been described as being counter-thematic to the constructive issues of modern society in our times. However, in the Middle East - and certainly this is true for many other world regions and other world religions - local saints, Jewish, Christian and Islamic, have gained a very ambiguous status in religious movements, political struggles and events of social re-construction. In the case of Islam, perhaps more openly, modernists and fundamentalists alike attempt to abolish or to re-formulate the agenda of venerating the saints. However, at the same time saints and their localities have become a sort of overcharged symbolic incidence in the modern presence of Islam, in politics, in the media and - perhaps on a more hidden ground - in the struggle of ideas. In this volume historians, islamologists, anthropologists and sociologists give a multiple description of the inherent issues of the unhampered continuity of Muslim saints and their significance.     Kurzfassung: Eine der zentralen Debatten der Cultural Studies beschäftigt sich mit dem Zusammenspiel von Medien und Identität.     Kurzfassung: The sociology of emotions is now at the forefront of micro social theory and research; and increasingly, the dynamics of emotions are seen as one of the ways to link micro to macro-level social processes. For in the end, what drives people to create social structures and to maintain commitments to these structures is emotion. The papers in this volume represent a broad array of approaches to the analysis of emotions. Some come from well established traditions in social psychology and micro sociology traditions such as symbolic interactionism, expectation states research, interaction ritual theory, and power-status theory. Others come from more macro-oriented theorizing in Europe; another set comes from meso-level analysis of organizational structures; and still others come from the opposite end of the intellectual continuum and explore the physiology and evolution of emotions. The goal of the volume is to sample the range of work in an area that did not exist three decades ago in sociology and to see the theoretical and research programs that sociological theorists and researchers on emotions are pursuing. The sociology of emotions is now a broad-based intellectual movement, with the result that no one volume can fully capture the diversity of work being performed by sociologists. Still, this volume attempts to provide readers with a review of some of the more creative work on emotional dynamics in human groupings

    Kurzfassung: "Are women benefiting from current changes in the Middle East media? With media all over the world still marginalizing women and trivializing gender inequalities, how does the situation in the Middle East compare? Proliferating satellite channels have increased women visibility in the region but visibility does not necessarily confer power. This book explores various ways in which media have been used to open up possibilities for women in the Middle East or, conversely, to restrict them. Having as their starting point the diverse experiences and multi-layered identities of women, the contributors treat media institutions and practices as part of wider power relations in society. By analyzing media production, consumption and texts, they reveal where and how gender boundaries have been erected or crossed. In eleven chapters, Women and Media in the Middle East spans both the region, from Iran to Morocco, and the media, from film and broadcasting to the press and internet.

Der Band, der aus einem von der Deutschen Kommission Justitia et Pax (Gerechtigkeit und Frieden) organisierten interdisziplinären Gesprächskreis hervorgegangen ist, reflektiert diese Situation und legt Beiträge zur ethischen Begründung, rechtlichen Verankerungen und zu historischen Erfahrungen mit Minderheitenrechten vor

    Kurzfassung: Das 20. Jahrhundert ist oft als das Jahrhundert der Gewalt bezeichnet worden. Daher mangelt es nicht an Gewaltphänomenen, die es genauer zu untersuchen gilt, als dies bislang geschehen ist. In diesem Band werden deswegen Gewalttaten aus neuen Perspektiven untersucht, neue Interpretationen ihrer Entstehung vorgestellt und neue Herausforderungen der sozialwissenschaftlichen Gewaltforschung debattiert. Folgende Fragen werden unter anderem in diesem gesellschaftspolitisch folgenreichen Buch behandelt: Kann der lange dominierende Begriff der physischen Gewalt überhaupt noch leitend sein, und muß die Gewaltanalyse sich nicht wieder stärker der strukturellen Gewalt zuwenden, da zunehmend eine »Gewalt ohne Gesicht« auftritt? Stecken die Ursachen im Gewalthandeln selbst, so daß Hinweise auf soziale Hintergründe etwa in die Irre führen? Verlieren sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungen aufgrund neuer biologischer Ansätze völlig an Relevanz? Biographische Informationen Wilhelm Heitmeyer, geboren 1945, war von 1996 bis 2013 Direktor des Instituts für interdisziplinäre Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung der Universität Bielefeld und arbeitet dort jetzt als Forschungsprofessor. In der edition suhrkamp gab er u. a. die Reihe Deutsche Zustände heraus. Wilhelm Heitmeyer, geboren 1945, war von 1996 bis 2013 Direktor des Instituts für interdisziplinäre Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung der Universität Bielefeld und arbeitet dort jetzt als Forschungsprofessor. Der Band spitzt diese Debatte auf die Frage zu, ob Soziale Arbeit über Inklusion/Exklusion oder über Integration/Desintegration angemessen bestimmt werden kann. Während die Systemtheorie einen allgemeinen Erklärungsanspruch erhebt, der über die grundlegende Unterscheidung von Inklusion/Exklusion entfaltet wird, findet sie sich in Verlegenheit, wenn sie zu Fragen sozialer Ungleichheiten Stellung beziehen soll. Obgleich Luhmann in seinen letzten Schriften diesbezüglich einschlägige Anstrengungen unternommen hat, ist der Zusammenhang von Systemtheorie und Ungleichheitstheorie unzureichend bestimmt. Der Band versucht hier zu einer weiteren Klärung beizutragen

    Kurzfassung: This collection of interdisciplinary essays explores how persons and things - the central elements of the social - are fabricated by legal rituals and institutions. The contributors, legal and anthropological theorists alike, focus on a set of specific institutional and ethnographic contexts, and some unexpected and thought-provoking analogies emerge from this intellectual encounter between law and anthropology. For example, contemporary anxieties about the legal status of the biotechnological body seem to resonate with the questions addressed by ancient Roman law in its treatment of dead bodies. The analogy between copyright and the transmission of intangible designs in Melanesia suddenly makes western images of authorship seem quite unfamiliar. A comparison between law and laboratory science presents the production of legal artefacts in new light. These studies are of particular relevance at a time when law, faced with the inventiveness of biotechnology, finds it increasingly difficult to draw the line between persons and things

    Kurzfassung: Zwar ist in den letzten Jahren der Konsens gewachsen, dass Deutschland ein Einwanderungsland ist, aber der Blick auf Migranten hat sich dadurch nicht wesentlich geändert. Auf der Basis des Paradigmas kultureller Differenz gelten sie nach wie vor als die Anderen, die Fremden. Doch die Fremdheit der Migranten als eine Prämisse der Debatte über Einwanderung in Deutschland verstellt den Blick für eine sehr vielfältige und gar nicht unbedingt fremde Lebenswirklichkeit. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes nun stellen diese Prämisse in Frage. Sie untersuchen, wie in den Diskursen von Gesellschaft, Politik und Wissenschaft die kulturelle Differenz vor allem der Einwanderer aus der Türkei immer wieder festgeschrieben wird und diskutieren anhand neuer theoretischer Zugänge alternative Perspektiven. Damit bereichert der Band die gegenwärtige Diskussion um Migration um notwendige innovative Positionen

    Anmerkung: The years 1989/1990 saw the fall of the Iron Curtain. Following forty years of significant restrictions, legal and non-bureaucratic travel from East-Central and Eastern European countries was once again possible and travelling and returning to those countries became just as easy. Immediately following the end of the East-West conflict, people from East-Central and Eastern European countries took advantage of their new freedom of travel. Many sought to emigrate to Western countries. However, when faced with such immigration, the euphoria which met the end of the political divisions in the West evaporated quickly. Several polls and surveys, projections and prognoses served to unsettle people more than the reality of immigration. This gave rise to a sometimes blind and specious – yet nevertheless politically effective – fear of a new mass migration of peoples. , Now, more than ten years after the fall of the Iron Curtain, the actual scale and development of the East-West migration in Europe be clearly evaluated. This book attempts to do just that, including a comprehensive overview and eleven country-specific chapters. Each chapter includes a historical review, an account of the most important changes since 1989/1990 and a forecast of future migration developments.〈p〉1989/90 fiel der Eiserne Vorhang. Nach mehr als 40 Jahren erheblicher Einschränkungen wurde die legale und unbürokratische Anreise aus den Staaten Ostmittel- und Osteuropas wieder möglich. Genauso leicht wurde die Ein- und Rückreise dorthin. Unmittelbar nach Ende des Ost-West-Konflikts begannen die Bürger Ostmittel- und Osteuropas, von dieser neuen Reisefreiheit Gebrauch zu machen. Etliche versuchten, in ein westliches Land auszuwandern. Angesichts solcher Zuwanderung verflog die Euphorie über das Ende der politischen Spaltung Europas im Westen relativ rasch. , Mehr noch als die tatsächliche Migration beunruhigten aber diverse Umfragen, Hochrechnungen und Prognosen die öffentliche Meinung. Es entstand eine teilweise unreflektierte und vordergründige, aber politisch höchst wirksame Angst vor einer neuen Völkerwanderung in Europa. Mehr als zehn Jahre nach dem Fall des Eisernen Vorhangs können nun tatsächliche Größe und Entwicklung der Ost-West-Wanderung in Europa klar abgeschätzt werden. Damit befasst sich dieses Buch. Es enthält eine Übersichtsdarstellung und elf Länderkapitel.
