Abstract: The history of the early Americas is a story of before and after, defined and divided by a pivotal moment of contact between two distinct cultures. On the European side it is a tale of exploration, high-stakes treasure-seeking, and conquest. For indigenous Americans--including the Maya, the Nahua, the Ta no, and the Wari--it is the beginning of the end, a violent saga of disease, enslavement, and the loss of languages and rituals. This collision of cultures comes to life in the manuscripts, maps, archaeological objects, and rare books that make up the collection of early American treasures in the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. 'Collecting for a New World: Treasures of the Early Americas' relates these encounters through vivid illustrations and interpretive descriptions of more than sixty rare and priceless items. In describing for the first time the journeys of the objects themselves--via African shipwrecks, secret meetings on airstrips, discoveries in castle libraries, and journeys into unknown archaeological sites hidden deep in the jungles of Guatemala--curator John Hessler reveals the role played by private collectors, whose knowledge, vision, and--in many cases, philanthropy--contribute so significantly to the collective understanding and interpretation of history and culture

Abstract: "This exhibition was initially conceived by Frank LaPena, a key figure in California's Native fine art movement since the 1960's. Co-organized with Mark Johsnon, and with the assistance of curatorial staff at the Crocker Art Museum and the Autry Museum, the catalogue will feature profiles of the artists, an art historical timeline, and contextual essays by Native American scholars including FrankLaPena, Julian Land, Franklin Tuele, and Janeen Antoine. The exhibition and its accompanying catalogue will spotlight the activisit dimension in California Indian art since the 1960's. Exhibition themes include: a political interest to address history and confront erasure, an environmental postionality that considers the subtle force of balance in nature in relation to contemporary imbalances; activist employment of symbols and language that signal indigenous difference in world view; an engagement with reanimating ideas drawn from myth and ritual; and a commitment to reflecting the real issues in contemporary society and the struggle to overcome internalized trauma. The catalogue will feature the work of 20 artists and will include discussion of an additional 20 artists within the essay content"--

Abstract: "If a picture is worth one thousand words, then Marcia Keegan's latest book chronicles the similarities between two ancient cultures tht have sustained the human legacy through epochs of change. While our current world view has been shaped by the Renaissance in Europe and the Industrial Revolution, the Native American and Tibetan cultures were thriving in a world of isolation from 'modernity,' maintaining heir own traditions handed down through their elders. The Native American emergence stories and ceremonies are as alive today as they were in pre-historic times. The Tibetan rituals date back to their root culture of Shang Shung, pre-dating ten thousand years ago as the indigenous culture for the Tibetan plateau. Both cultures have co-evolved without any recorded contact between each other until 1979 during the Dalai Lama's first historic visit to North America. With 150 color photographs"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: Für diesen 1986 erstmals erschienenen Bildband reiste der brasilianische Fotograf jahrelang durch Lateinamerika und fotografierte vor allem das beschwerliche Leben der Menschen. Mit Begleittexten. (Reinhold Heckmann)
Abstract: Der brasilianische Fotograf Sebastiao Salgado gehört heute zu den weltweit anerkanntesten Fotografen (vgl. hier zuletzt ID-B 22/13). (2) (Reinhold Heckmann)
