Abstract: The Routledge Handbook of Language in Conflict presents a range of linguistic approaches as a means for examining the nature of communication related to conflict. Divided into four sections, the Handbook critically examines text, interaction, languages and applications of linguistics in situations of conflict. Spanning 30 chapters by a variety of international scholars, this Handbook: includes real-life case studies of conflict and covers conflicts from a wide range of geographical locations at every scale of involvement (from the personal to the international), of every timespan (from the fleeting to the decades-long) and of varying levels of intensity (from the barely articulated to the overtly hostile) sets out the textual and interactional ways in which conflict is engendered and in which people and groups of people can be set against each other considers what linguistic research has brought, and can bring, to the universal aim of minimising the negative effects of outbreaks of conflict wherever and whenever they occur. The Routledge Handbook of Language in Conflict is an essential reference book for students and researchers of language and communication, linguistics, peace studies, international relations and conflict studies.

Abstract: "Language and Power offers a comprehensive survey of the ways in which language intersects and connects with the social, cultural and political aspects of power. It provides a comprehensive introduction to the history of the field, and covers all the major approaches, theoretical concepts and methods of analysis in this important and developing area of academic study. The book's twelve strands cover both the 'traditional' topics, such as race, gender and institutional power, as well as more recent developments such as the discourse of 'post-truth', and the power of social media. The book's unique design allows it to include readings from works by seminal figures in the field, such as Robin Lakoff, Deborah Cameron and Teun van Dijk. Real texts and examples are used throughout the book, including political and presidential speeches, advertisements from cosmetics companies, newspaper articles and headlines, and websites and internet media. The book is also accompanied by a well-populated supporting website that aims to challenge students at a more advanced level and which features exercises, extra reading, follow-up activities, and suggestions for further work. Language and Power will be essential reading for any student interested in the study of English Language or Linguistics"...

Abstract: Riots, strikes and protests are heavily mediatised events. Media representations thus play a crucial role in narrating instances of civil disorder for the public where they define the issues at stake, delimit frames of reference and debate, and ultimately legitimise or delegitimise the actors, actions and causes involved. From a critical semiotic perspective, drawing on insights from linguistics, multimodality and media studies, this book explores the ideological dimensions of media representation and its function in discursively constructing public understandings of, and attitudes toward, civil disorder. A range of case studies are presented which cut across time, communicative modality and genre, and geo-political context.

Quelle: Klappentext.

Abstract: "Stories are shared by millions of people online every day. They post and re-post interactions as they re-tell and respond to large-scale mediated events. These stories are important as they can bring people together, or polarise them in opposing groups. Narratives Online explores this new genre - the shared story - and uses carefully chosen case-studies to illustrate the complex processes of sharing as they are shaped by four international social media contexts: Wikipedia, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Building on discourse analytic research, Ruth Page develops a new framework - 'Mediated Narrative Analysis' - to address the large scale, multimodal nature of online narratives, helping researchers interpret the micro- and macro-level politics that are played out in computer-mediated communication"--

Abstract: The pioneering work of Bakhtin has led scholars to see all discourse as 'dialogical.' Contributors to this volume argue that something is overlooked with this focus. Many speakers, especially in political and religious contexts, craft monologues-single-voiced statements to which the only expected response is agreement or faithful replication.
