Abstract: "Culture, understood broadly, lay at the heart of contrasting right-wing strategies for government in France during the pivotal decade of 2002-2012. Looking at issues of political secularism, educational reform, televisual performance, public memory and nation-branding, Ahearne analyses how Presidents Chirac and Sarkozy sought to redefine contemporary French identity. The study extends prevailing conceptions of 'cultural policy', and shows how this constitutes a core dimension, alongside economic and social policies, of modern right-wing government. It traces, over the course of the decade in question, a dramatic hardening of the attitudes and values informing these programmes for cultural hegemony. These reflect enduring transformations in the political and symbolic landscape of contemporary France"--

Abstract: "Chinese Discourse Studies presents an innovative and systematic approach to discourse and communication in contemporary China. Incorporating Chinese philosophy and theory, it offers not only a distinct cultural paradigm in the field, but also a culturally sensitive and effective tool for studying Chinese discourses. In addition to paradigmatic construction, the book applies this new framework to local and global issues in present-day China, such as human rights, trade disputes and urban development. This book unpacks the critical implications for understanding cultural diversity, division and development both within the discipline and beyond, making it an invaluable resource researchers of discourse analysis, Chinese studies, and cultural studies. Abstract: Despite various decades of research and claim-making by feminist scholars and movements, gender remains an overlooked area in development studies. Yet, without gender it is impossible to understand development -- and the development of under-development. This collection brings together specialists from different parts of the world and various disciplines, who look at various key issues in development studies through the prisms of gender and feminism. Gender, as an expression of power, is an indispensable analytical category for social change. It reveals invisible realities and socio-political struggles, giving voice to the subaltern. It contributes to renewing methods, deconstruct and build innovative categories and concepts, challenging dominant paradigms. Thinking about gender can raise new controversies and encourage discussions on policy changes. While the current global crisis and growing inequalities urge us to find alternatives to globalised capitalism, feminist theory offers a fresh way to think and achieve social change. -- Provided by publisher

Abstract: "We tend to imagine that living apart from lovers is painful and unpleasant, but for many couples relating at a distance is not just a difficult or necessary part of their life, but may have its pleasures. This book draws on interviews with UK couples in distance relationships to explain, evaluate and advance sociological debates about intimate life. It provides a rich and human perspective on how bodies, emotions and connections to others are key in maintaining intimate relationships"--

Abstract: In the 21st Century, a perfect storm appears to have engulfed many of Britain's most important institutions. The list of those it has enveloped is extensive, but headline acts would include - the banking sector for malpractice, Parliament for its expenses scandal, the media for phone-hacking and the police for duplicity and corruption. It raises a fundamental question of whether there is an endemic and fundamental crisis in British political, economic and social institutions or instead simply a set of contingent events that have been discursively constructed and presented as a collective crisis. This volume offer the first major, wholesale consideration of the extent to which a crisis of legitimacy has taken root in Britain's key institutions. It does so by exploring the nature of crisis across a diverse range of institutions, assessing the accuracy of the 'crisis' label and crucially considers whether a set of shared underlying pathologies exist that has led to a point of collective crisis and the need for fundamental renewal

Abstract: "Many of the world's languages have diminishing numbers of speakers and are in danger of falling silent. Around the globe, a large body of linguists are collaborating with members of indigenous communities to keep these languages alive. Mindful that their work will be used by future speech communities to learn, teach and revitalise their languages, scholars face new challenges in the way they gather materials and in the way they present their findings. This volume discusses current efforts to record, collect and archive endangered languages in traditional and new media that will support future language learners and speakers. Chapters are written by academics working in the field of language endangerment and also by indigenous people working 'at the coalface' of language support and maintenance. Keeping Languages Alive is a must-read for researchers in language documentation, language typology and linguistic anthropology"..

Abstract: "This book explores whether and how religious and secular worldviews and political ideologies held by scientists, citizens, decision-makers and politicians influence science as practiced and understood today. In this book, customized science is defined as a science built according to - or altered and fitted to - a particular group's specifications, that is, its needs, interests or values, its political ideology or worldview. It is science governed not merely by goals such as increased knowledge and explanatory power, but also by goals such as economic growth, sustainable development, the equality of women or the end of religion. The contributions to this book discuss, with regard to particular worldviews and themes connected to the public role of science, whether science is increasingly becoming customized to fit the needs and interests of various groups in society, but also what the consequences of such a development may be both for science and society"--

Abstract: "This anthology offers unique, psycho-cultural perspectives on media, popular culture and emotion, as developed through the AHRC research network, 'Media and the Inner World'. Applying insights from the spheres of academic scholarship and clinical experience, the psycho-cultural approach developed in this book demonstrates the usefulness of psychoanalysis for developing nuanced approaches to media and cultural analysis. The chapters in this volume explore the relationship between media and the inner world by focusing on the inter-relationships between particular emotional themes and media contexts, ranging from fantasies of sporting ritual to the emotional work of cinema, the dynamics of digital narcissism and the relationship between paranoia and television. The book will be useful for students in Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Psychoanalytic Studies and Psychosocial Studies. It will also be of interest to people in professional training and practice in psychotherapeutic organisations and to professionals involved in the culture and media industries"..

Abstract: "How do we choose a partner to initiate a relationship with, and what makes us stay in a given relationship over time? These questions are most often pursued by scholars with an emphasis on the internal thoughts, feelings, and motivations of individual decision-makers. Conversely, this volume highlights the importance of considering external influences on individual decision-making in close relationships. Featuring contributions from internationally renowned scholars, the volume is divided into two interrelated sections. The first section considers global and societal influences on romantic relationships and the second section focuses on social network and communicative influences on romantic relationships. Taken together, this collection helps us to better understand how external factors influence the internal machinations of those involved in intimate relationships"--

Abstract: "The past decade has seen an increase in popular cultural representations of ageing, in response to the realities of an ageing Western population and an acknowledgement of the economic significance of consumption by seniors. Yet, while contemporary film often depicts late middle to old age as a time of renewal and acceptance, most popular depictions of ageing focus on images of loss, decline, and the fear of physically ageing 'naturally'. Ageing in popular culture is a battlefield, with an increasing range of euphemisms used to disguise the fact of age. Feminist discourse has kept forever young, even though some of its most eminent proponents are ageing and dying. In the field of popular cultural studies the emphasis on the discourse of postfeminism and the 'girling' of culture has foregrounded the concerns of young women at the expense of a focus on older women, or what 'gender' means for middle-aged to older people generally. This collection demonstrates how popular culture constructs ageing as a perilous experience for not only women but also for men, while also underscoring the possibilities (and problems) of positive representations of ageing in the wider culture and in feminist criticism. Abstract: "Despite its multiple limitations as a peace actor, the EU has been able to contribute to peace in different countries affected by protracted conflict. Going further than the debate about what the EU should do, the kind of power it represents and the pertinence of the liberal peace building model, this book explores Colombia, and beyond, to understand how the EU has used Official Development Aid to work with Civil Society Organizations and recipient governments for peacebuilding.Castaneda focuses on the European capacities to support multiple transitions to peace and proposes both a handy definition of peacebuilding at the intersection of three dimensions: security, development and democracy, and a framework for analyzing complex dynamics in conflict-affected countries, useful for designing international action.Mobilising tools from peace and conflict studies, development economics, sociology, public policy and international relations, this book will be a valuable resource to a range of scholars, uniquely providing a consideration of both sides of the cooperation programme: the international actor and the recipient society. Abstract: "This book offers new and compelling insight into the emergent shared culture of the relationship between political actors and journalists in nine European democracies. It is a truly comparative account of the attitudes of 2,500 political communication elites between Helsinki and Madrid on various aspects of the media's role in politics and on the mutual relationship of politicians, political spokespersons and journalists. The study identifies national political communication cultures across Europe over the importance of journalists in advocacy and commentary, pressures on the media and perceived political influence. It also highlights that professional roles determine the perception of news-making, the interpretation of daily political life and the ethos of professional conduct and interaction. "--

Abstract: "The shift to the modern world in East Asia was accomplished in part via the experience of colonial rule as Europeans, Americans and Japanese in the late nineteenth century constructed elaborate colonial empires throughout the region. Local reactions included collaboration, resistance and learning - and the latter fed into locally made nationalisms that fuelled popular revolts against foreign rule. When the system went into crisis with numerous wars during the 1930s and 1940s, local nationalists took their chance and lodged claims to independence. As the fighting subsided it became clear that empires were no longer tenable, and independent nation states began to be constructed. Today they form the underlying political structure of the burgeoning region of East Asia"--

Abstract: "This volume tracks the complex relationships between language, education and nation-building in Southeast Asia, focusing on how language policies have been used by states and governments as instruments of control, assimilation and empowerment. The individual chapters each represent one of the countries in the region, namely Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Written by established and well-known scholars of language, education and politics in Southeast Asia, the chapters examine the place of minority or non-dominant languages in nation-building agendas and practices, as well as their impact both on the linguistic ecology of specific countries and on the cultural, socio-economic and political well-being of their speakers. With a recent worldwide push towards multilingual education as one way to address the cultural, political and economic marginalization of millions of people around the world, this volume also examines the possibilities and challenges of implementing mother tongue-based education programmes in the region"..

Abstract: Contemporary culture offer contradictory views of the internet and new media technologies, painting them in extremes of optimistic enthusiasm and pessimistic concern. This book explores such representations, uncovering the roots of our cultural responses to the internet, centred upon a profoundly ambivalent reaction to technological modernity, Contemporary culture offer contradictory views of the internet and new media technologies, painting them in extremes of optimistic enthusiasm and pessimistic foreboding. While some view them as a repository of hopes for democracy, freedom and self-realisation, others consider these developments as sources of alienation, dehumanisation and danger. This book explores such representations, and situates them within the traditions of utopian and dystopian thought that have shaped the Western cultural imaginary. Ranging from ancient poetry to post-humanism, and classical sociology to science fiction, it uncovers the roots of our cultural responses to the internet, which are centred upon a profoundly ambivalent reaction to technological modernity. Majid Yar argues that it is only by better understanding our society's reactions to technological innovation that we can develop a balanced and considered response to the changes and challenges that the internet brings in its wake

Abstract: "The objective of corporate culture in a company is to align the organization's espoused values to the perceived (ideal) values of the corporation and its employees whether within the country or within the worldwide network of subsidiaries to create competitive success. We can call this value alignment among employees (irrespective of their nationality) the creation of company citizenship. We propose that company citizenship can be enhanced when the employees' personal values are in alignment with the values of the corporate culture in a multinational company. Corporate Culture in Multinational Companies examines this issue in the context of a number of Japanese multinational companies from various industrial sectors. This work explores the value component of corporate culture in these companies and their relationship with production efficiency and personal values of the employee, which create motivation. The authors combine both qualitative analysis of the experiences of leaders in these organizations and the most advanced quantitative analysis regarding corporate performance as reflected in the human resources in these organizations. Abstract: This study examines the utility of a public probity-focused approach to understanding citizen disaffection with those in public life. This work shows unequivocally that perceptions of public probity are coherent, substantively meaningful, and, crucially that they do matter for our understanding of citizen disaffection. In doing so, this book makes a strong case for the importance of deeper and more detailed research into this area. Making use of major, newly available datasets, this study presents new substantive findings about the causes of political perceptions and the consequences of political realities. This book is important reading for students and scholars of public opinion, political corruption and political integrity
Abstract: Jonathan Rose is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham UK, specialising in political probity and corruption. He is currently working on an ESRC/Hong Kong Research Grants Council funded project as part of an international team of researchers investigating the state of political integrity in the UK, Hong Kong and China. --Book Jacket

Abstract: The abuses and atrocities committed against indigenous populations during the colonial era are coming back to haunt the old imperial powers. As the idea of retributive justice becomes increasingly popular, former colonizing countries such as Britain, Spain, and the Netherlands are being held to account, through lawsuits and national apologies, for crimes they committed against native populations, requiring them to confront some of the grimmer aspects of their imperial pasts. This comparative study explores attitudes toward the existence of German, Spanish, American, and British concentration camps at the turn of the 19th Century. Through a critical genealogical study of these camp cultures, this text explores how imperialists and anti-imperialists have justified and condemned these camps and analyzes the continued debate on their legality, legitimacy, and necessity. Crucially, the study looks at current disputes between those who wish to revive memories of the struggles faced by Cuban guerillas, the Boers, and the Herero and Nama communities who were the victim of such horrendous atrocities and those who against calls for restorative justice for these crimes

Abstract: "This book explores the role of children and young people within early modern England's most controversial minority: Catholicism. It examines Catholic attempts to capture the next generation, Protestant reactions to these initiatives, and the religious, social, legal and political contexts in which young people formed, maintained and attempted to explain their religious identity. The young, it argues, were not inevitably pawns in a world governed by hierarchies of kinship, workplace, church and state. The motives and even the voices of those who challenged various manifestations of authority in the early modern world can often be recovered, and the choices they made tell us much about the complex and changing relationships between society, church and state in the post-Reformation world"--

Abstract: "This study is about new media, young people, the crisis of democracy and political renewal. It addresses a mixture of traditional and new questions: What is the political? How do we understand politics in a 'network age'? Can we talk sensibly about the concept of generation and generational change? Does democracy have a future? This book presents an optimistic assessment of how digital media supports new and distinctive forms of politics. Four case studies are offered: one of performance art and protest in Russia, another investigates new media campaigns to defend the rights to freedom of speech and copyright in America, one enquires into indigenous art and cartoons as politics in outback Australia and the last explores new forms of student action in schools and the university"..

Abstract: "Western civilization has entered a new fundamental crisis that can be explained by a very one-sided orientation of social values based on materialism and egocentrism, which is disrupting the delicate balance between the opposing forces of 'mind' and 'matter', and of 'I' and 'the others'. Many sources - from the great works of philosophy, religion, art and culture to social surveys and the course of history - qualify sustainability as the dynamic equilibrium between fundamental opposing forces. This insight and the ethical ability to better discriminate between stabilizing and destabilizing forces would allow further justification of human rights and new institutional arrangements in society at large and, in particular, in politics, economy and finance. It would enable a sustainable civilization to flourish within the boundaries of freedom and human dignity"..

Abstract: This volume offers a panoramic and interdisciplinary view of the growing field of Sports Mega-Event studies. Contributions explore leveraging strategies and the legacies from previous sports megas (London, Seoul, Sydney, Vancouver) and recent and future 'emerging' states and their hosting strategies (India, China, Qatar, Russia, Brazil), Have you ever wondered why states invest so heavily in sports mega-events? Ever considered who benefits from these (mostly publicly financed) 'mega' events? Part of the rationale of this edited collection is to go beyond the positive discourse that attends sports 'megas'. The volume of essays from a stellar international cast of experts offers a panoramic and interdisciplinary view of the growing field of Sports Mega-Event studies. The contributions cover discussion of the key concepts and debates in cutting-edge research, examples of leveraging strategies and the legacies from previous sports megas (such as London, Seoul, Sydney, Vancouver) and examples and analyses of recent and future 'emerging' states and their hosting strategies (such as India, China, Qatar and Russia)
Abstract: "International sports mega-events and their legacies are much debated features of contemporary culture. In this book many of the main writers in the field provide valuable new and accessible studies of this phenomenon. This book deserves to be widely read." -Maurice C. Abstract: This study introduces and systematizes the concept of global modernity as a paradigm for the analysis of the contemporary era. Building on Parson's distinction between social, cultural, personal and organismic systems, it presents a four-dimensional scheme that aims to identify modernity's key structural components. Each dimension is explored in turn, highlighting different aspects of the modern condition. While focusing on universal features, the scheme leaves ample room for capturing cross-regional diversity. The book's key argument is that we have entered a new phase of global, polycentric modernity which brings to a close several centuries of Western world domination and gives rise to a new world order. -- Publisher description

Abstract: "In an arguably increasingly mobile world, mobilities are represented in society in many ways. There is a growing awareness that these representations not only help us understand the complexities of social relations in space but also produce society and space. There is also an increased interest in the adoption of research methodologies that are distinctly mobile. Simultaneously, the contested nature of representation is reflected in current discussions around the capacity for the practices of the mobile and sensuous body to be represented, as some movements are considered non-representable.This book engages with these debates, and, by exploring representations of mobilities in government policy, literature, visual arts, music, and in research, it examines the methodological potential of representations and the ways in which they co-produce mobilities"--
