Die Probleme der Nachwendezeit, sowie die Entwicklungsaufgaben im Übergang zum Erwachsenwerden stehen dabei in diesem Reader im Vordergrund; dazu gehören: die berufliche Entwicklung, d.h. der Übergang in das Ausbildungssystem und in die Erwerbsarbeit, die Ablösung aus der Herkunftsfamilie, der Aufbau von Wertorientierungen und eines ethischen Bewusstseins, das Eingehen von Partnerbeziehungen und die Platzierung unter Gleichaltrigen. Mit diesem Band wird die Reihe Leipziger Längsschnittstudien im DJI Verlag abgeschlossen.

    Kurzfassung: In der Bundesrepublik wurde eine längere Phase des Desinteresses, wenn nicht gar der Tabuisierung bereits im Laufe der achtziger Jahre durch neue wissenschaftliche Anstrengungen durchbrochen, die insbesondere den westdeutschen Gründungs-"Mythos der schnellen Integration" zu differenzieren trachteten. Ebenso kam es zu Versuchen der Geschichtswissenschaft der DDR, die totalitäre Form der Tabuisierung der "Umsiedler"-Integration aufzulockern, wobei man jedoch bis 1989 zwangsläufig den SED-Mythos schneller und erfolgreicher Integration unbedingt verpflichtet blieb. In diesem Band werden die Ergebnisse der Forschungen zu dieser wichtigen Nachkriegsproblematik zusammengefasst.

    Kurzfassung: Leading anthropologists and political scientists are brought together in this volume to debate the problem of comparison, taking up a variety of topics from nationalist violence and labour strikes to ritual forms and religious practices. The contributors criticise conventional forms of comparative method, and introduce new comparative strategies, ranging from abstract model building to ethnographically based methods. They represent a wide variety of theoretical positions, from rational choice theory to interpretivism, and the issues are clarified in the cut and thrust of debate. This will be an excellent case book for courses on comparison across the social sciences

    Kurzfassung: In his study Modernity and the Holocaust, Zygmunt Bauman contrasts the hopes and expectations of the modernising world of the nineteenth century with the real outcomes of the twentieth century, where the very conditions of modernity have led to the mass destruction of humanity and of those early hopes for the betterment of humankind. This volume explores the possibilities left to those once modernising societies, not only in terms of the worlds they have constructed but also in discerning the novel conditions which the closure of modernity entails. That closure, in part the completion of industrialisation and the social order that went with it, and in part the dislocation of the kinds of social knowledge used to understand it, has raised profound and disturbing questions about the character of this brave new world and the ways in which its governance and the goal of the good society can be understood. This volume explores some of the current vicissitudes of modernity, especially in relation to the crises of the political, and the political consequences of new technologies

    Kurzfassung: Gregory S. Kavka (1947–94) was a prominent and influential figure in contemporary moral and political philosophy. The essays in this volume are concerned with fundamental issues of rational commitment and social justice to which Kavka devoted his work as a philosopher. The essays take Kavka's work as a point of departure and seek to advance the respective debates. The topics include: the relationship between intention and moral action as part of which Kavka's famous 'toxin puzzle' is a focus of discussion, the nature of deterrence, the rationality of morals, contractarian ethics, and the contemporary relevance of Hobbes' political thought.     Kurzfassung: This book examines how national and ethnic identities are being reforged in the post-Soviet borderland states. The first chapter provides a conceptual and theoretical context for examining national identities, drawing in particular upon post-colonial theory. The rest of the book is divided into three parts. In Part I, the authors examine how national histories of the borderland states are being rewritten especially in relation to new nationalising historiographies, around myths of origin, homeland, and descent. Part II explores the ethnopolitics of group boundary construction and how such a politics has led to nationalising policies of both exclusion and inclusion. Part III examines the relationship between nation-building and language, especially with regard to how competing conceptions of national identity have informed the thinking of both political decision-takers and nationalising intellectuals, and the consequences for ethnic minorities. Such perspectives on nation-building are illustrated with substantive studies drawn from the Baltic states, Ukraine, and Belarus, Transcaucasia, and Central Asia

    Kurzfassung: Die Medien sind ein plastisches Beispiel für technisch-institutionelle Interdependenzen: Im Zuge der von technischen Neuerungen vorangetriebenen Marktdynamik werden tradierte institutionelle Arrangements obsolet, womit neue ordnungspolitische Herausforderungen entstehen. Wenn aber die Medien eine »vierte Gewalt« bilden, so kann der rasante Veränderungsprozeß nicht nur mit einem »laisser faire« beantwortet werden. Die ordnungspolitische Herausforderung ist also bei den Medien besonders groß und bedarf sorgfältiger wissenschaftlicher Reflexion. Die »Arbeitsgruppe Wettbewerb des Wirtschaftspolitischen Ausschusses« im Verein für Socialpolitik erörterte dieses Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Freiheit und Zwang eingehend mit Vertretern aus Politik, Verbandswesen und Unternehmenspraxis. Der Tagungsband beinhaltet die Referate sowie zusätzliche Beiträge: -- Dr. Werner Hippe, Präsident des Verbandes Deutscher Zeitschriftenverleger e. V., Bonn, verdeutlicht die Chancen und Risiken der Zeitschriftenverlage angesichts der veränderten technischen Möglichkeiten. -- Peter Voß, Intendant des Südwestdeutschen Rundfunks, Baden-Baden, erörtert die gegenwärtige und zukünftige Legitimation des öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunks in einer sich wandelnden Umwelt. -- Reinhard Klimmt, MdL, Vorsitzender der Medienkommission des SPDBundesvorstands, referiert über die sozialen Gestaltungspotentiale der Medienpolitik. -- Prof. eh. Dietrich Ratzke entwickelt eine grundlegende Kritik an den euphorischen Szenarien der Medienzukunft. -- Prof. Dr. Wolf-Dieter Ring, Präsident der Bayerischen Landeszentrale für neue Medien, München, und Dr. Norbert Schneider, Direktor der Landesanstalt für Rundfunk Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, gehen auf die unterschiedlichen Erfahrungen in den jeweiligen Bundesländern ein.

    Kurzfassung: At once historically and theoretically informed, these essays invite the reader to think of religion dynamically, reconsidering American religious history in terms of practices that are linked to specific social contexts. The point of departure is the concept of "lived religion." Discussing such topics as gift exchange, cremation, hymn-singing, and women's spirituality, a group of leading sociologists and historians of religion explore the many facets of how people carry out their religious beliefs on a daily basis. As David Hall notes in his introduction, a history of practices "encompasses the tensions, the ongoing struggle of definition, that are constituted within every religious tradition and that are always present in how people choose to act. Practice thus suggests that any synthesis is provisional." The volume opens with two essays by Robert Orsi and Danièle Hervieu-Léger that offer an overview of the rapidly growing study of lived religion, with Hervieu-Léger using the Catholic charismatic renewal movement in France as a window through which to explore the coexistence of regulation and spontaneity within religious practice. Anne S. Brown and David D. Hall examine family strategies and church membership in early New England. Leigh Eric Schmidt looks at the complex meanings of gift-giving in America. Stephen Prothero writes about the cremation movement in the late nineteenth century. In an essay on the narrative structure of Mrs. Cowman's Streams in the Desert, Cheryl Forbes considers the devotional lives of everyday women. Michael McNally uses the practice of hymn-singing among the Ojibwa to reexamine the categories of native and Christian religion. In essays centering on domestic life, Rebecca Kneale Gould investigates modern homesteading as lived religion while R.     Kurzfassung: The contributors to this book believe that something can be done to make life in American cities safer, to make growing up in the urban ghettos less risky, and to reduce the violence that so often permeates urban childhoods. They consider why there is so much violence, why some people become violent and others do not, and why violence is more prevalent in some areas. Both biological and psychological characteristics of individuals are considered. The authors also discuss how the urban environment, especially the street culture, affects childhood development. They review a variety of intervention strategies, considering when it would be appropriate to use them and towards whom they should be targeted. Drawing upon ethnographic commentary, laboratory experiments, historical reviews, and program descriptions, this book presents a variety of opinions on the causes of urban violence and the changes necessary to reduce it

As part of what she calls her "feminist disloyalty," she turns a critical, even skeptical, eye on current debates about multiculturalism and "difference" while simultaneously exposing the many ways in which white racial supremacy has been reconfigured since the institutional demise of segregation. Most of all, she examines the hypocrisy and contradictoriness of over a century of narratives that posit Anglo-Americans as heroic agents of racism's decline. Whether assessing Uncle Tom's Cabin, lynching, Leslie Fiedler's racialist mapping of the American novel, the Black Power movement of the 60s, 80s buddy films, or the novels of Richard Wright and Toni Morrison, Wiegman unflinchingly confronts the paradoxes of both racism and antiracist agendas, including those advanced from a feminist perspective.American Anatomies takes the long view: What epistemological frameworks allowed the West, from the Renaissance forward, to schematize racial and gender differences and to create social hierarchies based on these differences? How have those epistemological regimes changed-and not changed-over time? Where are we now? With painstaking care, political passion, and intellectual daring, Wiegman analyzes the biological and cultural bases of racial and gender bias in order to reinvigorate the discussion of identity politics. She concludes that, for very different reasons, identity proves to be dangerous to minority and majority alike.

    Kurzfassung: This book compares resistance to technology across time, nations, and technologies. Three post-war examples - nuclear power, information technology, and biotechnology - are used in the analysis. The focus is on post-1945 Europe, with comparisons made with the USA, Japan, and Australia. Instead of assuming that resistance contributes to the failure of a technology, the main thesis of the book is that resistance is a constructive force in technological development, giving technology its particular shape in a particular context. Whilst many people still believe in the positive contribution made by science and technology, many have become sceptical. By exploring the idea that modernity creates effects that undermine its own foundations, forms and effects of resistance are explored in various contexts. The book presents a unique interdisciplinary study, including contributions from historians, sociologists, psychologists, and political scientists
