Co2libri’s collaborative endeavor builds on long-standing active connections with partners in Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Instead of setting an agenda from the North, it proposes to figure out ways forward through collaborative engagement, building on relationships of mutual trust. Using formats that facilitate substantial and open-ended discussion, we are re-thinking theory and method, academic practices, and research ethics, while keeping material inequalities in view.

    Abstract: Der Tagungsband thematisiert eine der innovativsten und einflussreichsten protestantischen Gruppen des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts. Die 1727 entstandene Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine entwickelte sich unter der Leitung des Reichsgrafen Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf (1700-1760) zu einem Avantgarde-Projekt des frühneuzeitlichen Protestantismus in Europa. Dazu trugen wesentlich das für andere Konfessionen offene Kirchenverständnis, die Relativierung von Standes- und Geschlechterdifferenzen, neue Frömmigkeitsformen und eine ausgeprägte regionale und internationale Mobilität bei. Der Band widmet sich der Geschichte und Wirkung der Herrnhuter Brüdergemeinde in Mittel-, Ost- und Nordeuropa sowie in Nord- und Südamerika in einer bisher nicht gekannten fachlichen Breite. Die 35 Aufsätze des Bands versammeln in sechs Sektionen neben Theologie und Geschichtswissenschaften auch Beiträge aus Fächern wie Linguistik, Naturgeschichte, historische Geographie, Architektur, Musikwissenschaft und Digital Humanities

    Abstract: Writing does not begin and end with the encoding of an idea into a group of symbols. It is practiced by people who have learnt its principles and acquired the tools and skills for doing it, in a particular context that affects what they do and how they do it. Nor are these practices static, as those involved exploit opportunities to adapt old features and develop new ones. The act of writing then has tangible and visible consequences not only for the writers but also for those encountering what has been produced, whether they can read its content or not – with potential for a wider social visibility that can in turn affect the success and longevity of the writing system itself. With a focus on the syllabic systems of the Bronze Age Aegean, this book attempts to bring together different perspectives to create an innovative interdisciplinary outlook on what is involved in writing: from structuralist views of writing as systems of signs with their linguistic values, to archaeological and anthropological approaches to writing as a socially grounded practice. The main chapters focus on the concepts of script adoption and adaptation; different methods of logographic writing; and the vitality of writing traditions, with repercussions for the modern world. Contexts of and Relations between Early Writing Systems (CREWS) is a project funded by the European Research Council under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program (grant agreement No. 677758), and based in the Faculty of Classics, University of Cambridge

    Abstract: "Shae Smith Cox's The Fabric of Civil War Society examines the material culture of military uniforms, badges, and flags during and after America's bloodiest conflict. She suggests that these objects both represented and influenced the identity of Americans. She also reveals how the study of material culture allows for a better understanding of the war and its commemoration, especially regarding women's roles, the lives of African Americans and indigenous peoples, and the struggles of the common soldier. Cox's study traces the influences of uniforms, badges, and flags throughout the war and Reconstruction as markers of power and authority for both sides. She then shows how sewn materials from the conflict became cherished objects by the turn of the century, a transition seen in veterans replacing their wartime uniforms with new commemorative attire and repatriating Confederate battle flags. Looking specifically at the creation of material culture by various commemoration groups, including the Grand Army of the Republic, the Woman's Relief Corps, the United Confederate Veterans, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Cox suggests the ways that American society largely accepted their messages, furthering the mission of their memory work. The objects themselves suggest how starkly divided Americans were and how starkly divided they remained. Studying material culture in the form of uniforms, badges, and flags allows Cox to reinterpret a variety of Civil War topics, including preparation for war, nuances in relationships between Native American and African American soldiers, the roles of women, and the rise of post-war memorial societies. Her work will interest scholars who study the Civil War and its memory"--

    Abstract: "In The Color Black, Beeta Baghoolizadeh traces the twin processes of enslavement and erasure of Black people in Iran during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She illustrates how geopolitical changes and technological advancements in the nineteenth century made enslaved East Africans uniquely visible in their servitude in wealthy and elite Iranian households. During this time, Blackness, Africanness, and enslavement became intertwined-and interchangeable-in Iranian imaginations. After the end of slavery in 1929, the implementation of abolition involved an active process of erasure on a national scale, such that a collective amnesia regarding slavery and racism persists today. The erasure of enslavement resulted in the erasure of Black Iranians as well. Baghoolizadeh draws on photographs, architecture, theater, circus acts, newspapers, films, and more to document how the politics of visibility framed discussions around enslavement and abolition during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In this way, Baghoolizadeh makes visible the people and histories that were erased from Iran and its diaspora"--

    Abstract: Der Dreißigjährige Krieg gilt als die größte Katastrophe und traumatischste Kriegserfahrung der deutschen Geschichte vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Tatsächlich litten in vielen Regionen große Teile der Bevölkerung schwer unter den Kriegshandlungen und ihren Folgen. Zugleich gab es aber auch deutliche regionale und soziale Unterschiede: Während viele Hab und Gut oder sogar ihr Leben verloren, arrangierten sich andere mit dem Krieg oder konnten sogar von ihm profitieren, selbst in schwer vom Krieg betroffenen Regionen "mitten in Deutschland". Grundsätzlich gilt: Der Dreißigjährige Krieg wurde von den meisten Menschen nicht nur passiv erlitten, sondern immer auch aktiv bewältigt.     Abstract: The notion of apocalypse is an age-old concept which has gained renewed interest in popular and scholarly discourse. The book highlights the versatile explications of apocalypse today, demonstrating that apocalyptic transformations - the various encounters with anthropogenic climate change, nuclear violence, polarized politics, colonial assault, and capitalist extractivism - navigate a range of interdisciplinary views on the present moment.     Abstract: In state formation research, princely houses have been a blind spot. The development of states has been discussed from many perspectives, like interstate competition, internal social conflicts, fiscal-military developments, etc., but at the centre of most European states, there was a princely house. These ruling houses have been overlooked in studies about state formation. What's more, when discussing such dynasties, the vertical chronological perspective (grandfather-father-son) is all dominating, for instance in the focus on dynastic continuity, dynastic culture and representation, and the like. This collection of essays highlights the horizontal perspective (ruler, all children, siblings, cousins), in asking how the members of a princely family acted as a power network. The quest is to develop an understanding how this family network interplayed with other factors in the state formation process.     Abstract: Started in the wake of George Zimmerman's 2013 acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has become a powerful and incendiary campaign demanding redress for the brutal and unjustified treatment of black bodies by law enforcement in the United States. The movement is only a few years old, but as Christopher J. Lebron argues in this book, the sentiment behind it is not; the plea and demand that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" comes out of a much older and richer tradition arguing for the equal dignity-and not just equal rights-of black people. The Making of Black Lives Matter presents a condensed and accessible intellectual history that traces the genesis of the ideas that have built into the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Drawing on the work of revolutionary black public intellectuals, including Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, Langston Hughes, Zora Neal Hurston, Anna Julia Cooper, Audre Lorde, James Baldwin, and Martin Luther King Jr., Lebron clarifies what it means to assert that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" when faced with contemporary instances of anti-black law enforcement. He also illuminates the crucial difference between the problem signaled by the social media hashtag and how we think that we ought to address the problem. As Lebron states, police body cameras, or even the exhortation for civil rights mean nothing in the absence of equality and dignity. To upset dominant practices of abuse, oppression and disregard, we must reach instead for radical sensibility. Radical sensibility requires that we become cognizant of the history of black thought and activism in order to make sense of the emotions, demands, and argument of present-day activists and public thinkers.     Abstract: "A collection of works by Asian scholars looking at different ways in which relatively recent traumas have been memorialized in their various countries, often while the traumas themselves are ongoing, or the memories of them contested. Memory studies typically focuses on the study of memorialization after traumatic incidents are overcome, in Asia, however, the past and the present remain closely intertwined. Between the legacies of the Japanese Empire, the respective suppressions by the Kuomintang and the People's Republic of China, and the ongoing protests in much of Southeast Asia against oppressive governments and laws, memorialization is occurring while the histories are still being contested. The contributors to this book are Asian scholars examining the memorializing of events in the countries of Asia, including China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Thailand and the Philippines, using local language sources. They look at a broad range of media of memorialization, encompassing statues, cemeteries, testimonial literature, and film among others. An insightful resource for scholars of memory and cultural studies, as well as those of twentieth and twenty-first century Asian history"--

    Abstract: "In 1997, the publication of Rape in Antiquity established rape as a viable field for classical scholarship. This wideranging new survey builds on that volume's legacy to show what has changed in classical research relevant to understanding rape. It responds to the debates around how to define rape that have emerged over recent decades, including over how to categorise rape both in emic and in etic terms, especially when the Greeks and Romans lacked any word that corresponded with our 'rape' yet possessed an extensive vocabulary for use in relation to coercive and other forms of 'bad' sex. The contributors, brought together from across the world, and including senior researchers and emerging scholars, engage both with developments in classical research and with developments in other disciplines that can frame new approaches to ancient evidence; these include feminist theory, psychology and conflict studies. They look at the move to locate the female 'voice' and female subjectivity, including in seemingly unlikely places; the identification of violence against women as a tool of ancient warfare; and definitional issues including the shift advocated by Stewart and others from 'rape' to 'rape?'. Through its coherent goal - of showing the ongoing relevance of rape as a topic for classical research - the volume is also the first to present multiple and diverse perspectives in terms of chronology from ancient Greece, ancient Rome, Late Antiquity and the postclassical periods, and in terms of evidence including law, drama, medical literature, art, philosophy, and postclassical art, cinema and graphic novels"--
