This volume of papers is the outcome of a summative conference held at the University of East Anglia in April 2011 on the completion of a two-year collaborative research project that sought to investigate and understand the place of basketry in human culture. Entitled 'Beyond the basket: construction , order and understanding', and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council as part of the 'Beyond Text' programme, the project was based at the School of World Art Studies and Museology, and the Sainsbury Research Unit for the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas at the University of East Anglia
