    Abstract: Main description: Anhand einer umfangreichen Sammlung englisch- und deutschsprachiger Beispiele werden Mißverständnisse empirisch untersucht. Die Grundlage bildet ein auf der Sprechakttheorie aufbauendes Kommunikationsmodell. Es ermöglicht eine Ursachenanalyse von Mißverständnissen ebenso wie eine Typologie auf Grund verschiedener Aspekte der Äußerungsfunktion, die vom Mißverstehen betroffen sind. Überlegungen anhand benachbarter interaktiver Phänomene wie unbemerktem Mißverstehen und Nichtverstehen führen darüber hinaus zu dem Ergebnis, daß vollständiges Verstehen eher ein soziales Konstrukt als eine interaktive Realität darstellt.
    Abstract: Main description: In this book misunderstandings are analyzed using a pragmatically-oriented modell of communication. The empirical basis is a large corpus of examples from English and German. The theoretical approach makes it possible in many instances to identify the reason why a misunderstanding occurs. A three-level concept of communicative functions, making use of some fundamental concepts of speech act theory, leads to a classification of three major types of misunderstandings. An investigation into the relationship between misunderstandings and phenomena such as nonunderstanding and unnoticed misunderstandings leads to the conclusion that 'total' understanding must be regarded as a social construct rather than as interactive reality.

Damit sind sie von entscheidender Bedeutung für die Wahrnehmung der Syntax und für die Verstehensprozesse im Gespräch. Prosodische und nonverbale Ausdrucksmittel sind aber nicht von der Syntax determiniert, sondern ermöglichen als selbständige Signalisierungssysteme verschiedene semantische oder stilistisch-pragmatische Differenzierungen.
    Abstract: Main description: Proceeding from a systematic analysis of excerpts from televised verbal exchanges, the study demonstrates how prosody, gesture and gaze can mark syntactic boundaries and support linguistic 'repair jobs'. This underlines their cardinal significance for the perception of syntax and comprehension processes in conversational intercourse. By contrast, prosodic and nonverbal means of expression are not determined by syntax but function as signalling systems in their own right providing their users with a variety of additional semantic or stylistic/pragmatic differentiation resources.

    Abstract: Main description: This study proceeds from the working assumption that writing may plausibly be regarded as a form of complex linguistic action. On this basis concrete processes characteristic of text production are subjected to closer analysis with regard to their real-time extension and the planning, wording and revision activities they involve. The conclusion arrived at is that, with their almost total allegiance to the cognitive paradigm, existing insights on the nature of the writing process need to be substantially extended or modified.

After a period of thoroughgoing assimilation, the French Newfoundlanders are now fighting for their ethno-linguistic survival. The present study synthesises the qualitative and quantitative findings of large-scale on-the-spot fieldwork with a systemic approach to the concept of ethnic identity in North America to propose a prognosis on the future development of collective identity among the French Newfoundlanders
