    Kurzfassung: In der Bundesrepublik wurde eine längere Phase des Desinteresses, wenn nicht gar der Tabuisierung bereits im Laufe der achtziger Jahre durch neue wissenschaftliche Anstrengungen durchbrochen, die insbesondere den westdeutschen Gründungs-"Mythos der schnellen Integration" zu differenzieren trachteten. Ebenso kam es zu Versuchen der Geschichtswissenschaft der DDR, die totalitäre Form der Tabuisierung der "Umsiedler"-Integration aufzulockern, wobei man jedoch bis 1989 zwangsläufig den SED-Mythos schneller und erfolgreicher Integration unbedingt verpflichtet blieb. In diesem Band werden die Ergebnisse der Forschungen zu dieser wichtigen Nachkriegsproblematik zusammengefasst.

    Kurzfassung: Unlike political or economic institutions, social movements have an elusive power, but one that is no less real. From the French and American revolutions through the democratic and workers' movements of the nineteenth century to the totalitarian movements of today, movements exercise a fleeting but powerful influence on politics and society. This study surveys the history of the social movement, puts forward a theory of collective action to explain its surges and declines, and offers an interpretation of the power of movement that emphasises its effects on personal lives, policy reforms and political culture. While covering cultural, organisational and personal sources of movements' power, the book emphasises the rise and fall of social movements as part of political struggle and as the outcome of changes in political opportunity structure

    Kurzfassung: At once historically and theoretically informed, these essays invite the reader to think of religion dynamically, reconsidering American religious history in terms of practices that are linked to specific social contexts. The point of departure is the concept of "lived religion." Discussing such topics as gift exchange, cremation, hymn-singing, and women's spirituality, a group of leading sociologists and historians of religion explore the many facets of how people carry out their religious beliefs on a daily basis. As David Hall notes in his introduction, a history of practices "encompasses the tensions, the ongoing struggle of definition, that are constituted within every religious tradition and that are always present in how people choose to act. Practice thus suggests that any synthesis is provisional." The volume opens with two essays by Robert Orsi and Danièle Hervieu-Léger that offer an overview of the rapidly growing study of lived religion, with Hervieu-Léger using the Catholic charismatic renewal movement in France as a window through which to explore the coexistence of regulation and spontaneity within religious practice. Anne S. Brown and David D. Hall examine family strategies and church membership in early New England. Leigh Eric Schmidt looks at the complex meanings of gift-giving in America. Stephen Prothero writes about the cremation movement in the late nineteenth century. In an essay on the narrative structure of Mrs. Cowman's Streams in the Desert, Cheryl Forbes considers the devotional lives of everyday women. Michael McNally uses the practice of hymn-singing among the Ojibwa to reexamine the categories of native and Christian religion. In essays centering on domestic life, Rebecca Kneale Gould investigates modern homesteading as lived religion while R. These include socio-political reform, national and racial conflict, eugenics, the position of women and Nazism/Fascism. The aim is to illuminate, through detailed comparative analyses, both the flexibility and the limits of Social Darwinism - limits which derive from the view of nature which lies at the very heart of Social Darwinism. The study concludes with a discussion of modern sociobiology in order to assess the continuing vitality of Social Darwinism

    Anmerkung: Der vorliegende Band faßt die wesentlichen Befunde aus der Arbeit der KSPW-Berichtsgruppe III "Politische Interessenvermittlung, Kommunal­ und Verwaltungspolitik" sowie aus anderen einschlägigen, außerhalb der KSPW entstandenen Untersuchungen zusammen. Ziel ist die Darstellung der Transition der früheren DDR zu einem Teil der Bundesrepublik Deutschland nach der Maßgabe von Art. 23 GG in den Bereichen Politik und Verwaltung. Die Berichtsgruppe ist aus den beiden KSPW-Arbeitsgruppen "Parteien und Verbände" sowie "Verwaltungs- und Kommunalpolitik" hervorgegangen. Obwohl in den genannten Arbeitsgruppen, wie auch in den anderen Arbeitsgruppen der KSPW, eine Reihe von Kurzstudien und Projekten vergeben wurden, zeigte sich, daß das durch die Berichtsgruppe zu behandelnde Feld zu weit und zu komplex war, als daß allein aus den KSPW-Forschungen eine hinlänglich sachgerechte und umfassende Analyse des politischen Transitionsprozesses hätte entstehen können. Aus dieser Einschätzung folgte die Schlußfolgerung, im Rahmen einer Heuristik der vertikalen Systemdifferenzierung in die Makroebene der politischen Institutionen (unter Einschluß der Verwaltung), die Mesoebene des intermediären Systems und die Mikroebene der politischen Orientierungen und Verhaltensweisen der Bevölkerung diese Schwerpunkte jeweils nach definierten Auswahl- und Strukturierungs­ kriterien durch die Vergabe von Expertisen an externe Wissenschaftler bearbeiten zu lassen. Damit war sichergestellt, daß einerseits den durch die KSPW-Forschungen gewonnenen Befunden in vollem Umfang Rechnung getragen werden könnte und andererseits ein möglichst hoher Anteil der in anderen Forschungskontexten entstandenen Ergebnisse Berücksichtigung finden würde. Die Untersuchungen zur Mikroebene haben in besonderer Weise von den Möglichkeiten der KSPW profitiert

    Kurzfassung: Das Thema ›Nation‹ hat die Historiker eine Zeitlang wenig beschäftigt. Der unversehens in vielen Ländern erneut höchst lebendige Nationalismus ist jedoch eine Herausforderung auch für die Wissenschaft. Ihr Interesse für die Nation und das Nationale ist wieder erwacht, aber sie geht an die Problematik anders heran als früher: mit einem historisch wie aktuell geschärften Blick und mit neuen Fragestellungen. Nach Politik- und Ideengeschichte haben zuletzt sozialgeschichtliche Untersuchungen die Diskussion über Nation und Nationalismus vorangebracht. Erforscht wurde der Nationalismus als soziales Phänomen moderner Gesellschaften; zumindest im Hintergrund haben dabei meistens auch Nationalgefühl und nationale Empfindungen eine Rolle gespielt.Die Beiträge dieses Bandes erfassen den Zusammenhang von Nation und Emotion indessen auf neuartige Weise. Zentral ist die Vergegenwärtigung des Nationalen in nationalen Mythen, Symbolen, Ritualen. Wie haben sie nationale Emotionen erzeugt oder verstärkt? Und wie deren Ausleben geformt und reguliert? Mehr als das: Wie weit haben nationale Mythen, Geschichtsbilder, Erinnerungen daran mitgewirkt, Empfindungen wie Trauer und Hoffnung zu definieren und zu steuern? In welchem Maße haben Gefühle wie Liebe und Haß in Verbindung mit Nationalismus und Nation eine andere Intensität, eine andere Richtung bekommen? Es geht natürlich auch um das schwer faßbare »Nationalgefühl«, doch ist das Interesse umfassender. Im Blick steht das vielfältige und vielschichtige Beziehungsgeflecht von Nation und Emotion, das zugleich über sich hinausweist auf die allgemeine Frage der Geschichtlichkeit und kulturellen Relativität von Emotionen.Studien über Nationalismus und das Nationale beschränken sich fast immer auf eine Nation.     Kurzfassung: The thirteen essays in this book reflect the dual character of writing about the history of the British working class. The first section focuses on the outlook, organization, and policies of the Labour movement. The second section is concerned with central aspects of the social history of the working class. Together, these essays provide striking evidence of the ways in which the experience of class has pervaded virtually every corner of this nation's public life. They also show that the mixed political record of organized Labour, its hesitations and failures as well as its struggles and successes, cannot be understood without a full appreciation of the collective and individual lives of working people outside the political arena

    Kurzfassung: Work and Politics develops a historical and comparative sociology of workplace relations in industrial capitalist societies. Professor Sabel argues that the system of mass production using specialized machines and mostly unskilled workers was the result of the distribution of power and wealth in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Great Britain and the United States, not of an inexorable logic of technological advance. Once in place, this system created the need for workers with systematically different ideas about the acquisition of skill and the desirability of long-term employment. Professor Sabel shows how capitalists have played on naturally existing division in the workforce in order to match workers with diverse ambitions to jobs in different parts of the labor market. But he also demonstrates the limits, different from work group to work group, of these forms of collaboration

    Kurzfassung: As a result of the strength and dominance of the centralized state, ritual action in China often takes its logic from political action. In this book Emily Ahern explores the implications of this. She argues that forms of control attempted ritually on non-human persons (gods and other spirits) in China parallel those forms of control which people regard as effective in ordinary life, namely political control, and draws important conclusions from this. She shows that in China it is possible to discard terms such as 'magic', which imply that acts directed to spirits operate on a different basis from acts in ordinary life. She also challenges claims in anthropology that, since they seem arbitrary and the actions of participants in them highly predictable, rituals support established authority. Her book will be of interest not only to specialists in Chinese studies, but to social anthropologists and others interested in the link between ritual and political processes
