About this book

The Palgrave Handbook of Natural Gas and Global Energy Transitions provides an in-depth and authoritative examination of the transformative implications of the ongoing global energy transitions for natural gas markets across the world.

With case studies from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Latin America, South America, Australia, and the Middle East, the volume introduces readers to the latest legal, policy, technological, and fiscal innovations in natural gas markets in response to ongoing global energy transitions. It outlines the risk mitigation strategies and contractual techniques — focusing on resilience planning, low-carbon business models, green procurement, climate-smart infrastructure development, accountability, gender justice, and other sustainability safeguards — that are required to maximize the full value of natural gas as a catalyst for a just and equitable energy transition and for energy security acrossthe world.

Written in an accessible style, this book outlines the guiding principles for a responsible and low-carbon approach to the design, financing, and implementation of natural gas development and commercialization. It is an indispensable text and reference work for students, scholars, practitioners, and stakeholders in natural gas, energy, infrastructure, and environmental investments and projects.

Reviews

"I applaud Damilola S. Olawuyi and Eduardo G. Pereira for the powerful case they are making to promote natural gas as a fuel for just energy transitions in this book. The Palgrave Handbook of Natural Gas and Global Energy Transitions presents practical suggestions for harnessing natural gas markets from energy industry stakeholders. As editors with considerable energy expertise themselves, Olawuyi and Pereira provide their audience — from corporate leaders to government officials — a thorough look at the regulatory, financial, and business measures necessary for gas-producing nations to capitalize on their natural resources. They give us success stories to consider and rightly challenge us to consider the part women play in our evolving energy industry. The result is a compelling read that, I believe, makes a powerful case for pursuing just energy transitions without demonizing the resource most capable of moving us closer to a zero-emissions future."

--NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber, CEO of Centurion Law Group, and author of “Billions at Play: The Future of African Energy and Doing Deals.”

"Natural gas markets are going through a rapid transition. Carbon neutral LNG is floating across oceans, gas is increasingly used as a replacement fuel, Russian attack on Ukraine and many other developments are reshaping the gas markets, their regulation and the contractual details that we have used in the last decades. This book could not come at a better time. In-depth studies on the gas sector transition in various parts of the world will provide guidance for market actors, governments and experts. Clearly, this book is what can be called must read."

Kim Talus, McCulloch Chair in Energy Law and Director of Tulane Center for Energy Law; Professor of European Energy Law, UEF Law School and Professor of Energy Law, University of Helsinki

"Natural gas is widely seen as the fuel of the energytransition given its lower carbon footprint and the intermittency of most current renewable sources. The European Commission has even decided that power plants burning natural gas can be considered generators of green energy. Moreover, recent spiking prices and international conflicts have raised global awareness of energy security boosting interest in the gas industry. It is thus timely to have a book providing a comprehensive, cross-country and cross-disciplinary approach of natural gas markets with special focus on its ongoing transformation and recent trends. Especially useful for policymakers, regulators, industry professionals and scholars."

André Giserman, Advisor, Office of the Director General, Brazilian National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels.
