Dominicans live in the Dominican Republic. which occupies the eastern two-thirds of Hispaniola. The contemporary population physically reflects European and African ancestry. Dominican society is organized strongly on the basis of class and race. Dominicans of the more powerful classes, who control the economic and political processes of the country, have historically been of European ancestry. The production and export of sugarcane has been the major economic activity of the Dominican Republic. Agriculture continues to be the largest source of employment. Tourism is the most rapidly growing sector of the Dominican economy. Dominicans speak Spanish.
