La démarche historico-sociologique de Walter Benjamin dans Paris, capitale du XIXe siècle, ce « livre qui n'est pas un livre », n'est pas une démarche de flâneur, mais celle d'un chiffonnier. Modèle hérétique de savant, le chiffonnier collecte les rebuts de la vie onirique du collectif depuis les premières utopies socialistes jusqu'aux dernières fantasmagories bourgeoises, du début à la fin du XIXe siècle, en les mettant en relation avec la structure économique du capitalisme et avec le mouvement social naissant. Il y rassemble ainsi les éléments disjoints d'une véritable expérience historique qu'expriment tant la parole ouvrière que l'imagerie bourgeoise, alliées chacune à leur manière à un « matérialisme anthropologique » ravivé par le machinisme. A cette fin, il part lui-même de sa propre expérience historique en tant que ce passé mis au rebut l'y interpelle, et cela de manière à faire sauter le faux continuum d'un historicisme et d'un sociologisme narcotiques.

Walter Benjamin's historical-sociological reasoning in The Arcades Project - this "book which is not a book"— is not that of the flâneur, but of the ragpicker. As the heretic model of the scholar, the ragpicker collects the refuse of the dream life of the collective from the first socialists utopias to the last bourgeois phantasmagorias, from the beginning to the end of the 19th century, relating them to the economic structure of capitalism and to the burgeoning social movement. He assembles here the disjointed elements of a real historical experience, expressed through worker's speech rather than in bourgeois imagery, each allied with an "anthropological materialism" brought back to life by mechanization. For this purpose, the ragpicker starts from his own historical experience, which allows him to relate to this refused past in order to explode the false continuity of a narcotic historicism and a narcotic sociologism.
