New book from Max Carocci: Warriors of the Plains

A new book by Max Carocci will be published this February.

February 2012 will see Max Carocci’s new book, Warriors of the Plains, published by McGill-Queen’s University Press. In this indepth, illustrated work he looks at the complex history of North American Plains Indian warrior cultures and examines its legacy and place in contemporary Native American society.

"Warriors of the Plains skilfully interweaves … a generously detailed examination of Plains Indian warrior art - weapons, amulets, clothing, and ceremonial objects - with particular emphasis on their ritual use and symbolic meanings. Replete with both modern and archival photographs from the British Museum, this book offers a novel approach to a fascinating subject, while integrating history, anthropology, and personal narratives."[McGill-Queen’s University Press web site]

The book complements both his short film (November 2011) and the British Museum exhibition on Native American art which he curated and which is currently touring Britain.

He is also co-editor, with Stephanie Pratt, of 'Native American Adoption, Captivity and Slavery in Changing Contexts' which has just been published by Palgrave Macmillan.

Max Carocci is Programme Director for World Arts and Artefacts at Birkbeck and project curator at the British Museum.
