Execution of two variants of ground paintings, locally known as ashtadal (octagon). The octagon is formed by two intersecting rectangles or squares. The centre of the octagon is reserved for the principal deity of the rite. The geometric octagon is extended with curved lines and formed into a stylized lotus-flower. Further motives are added, marking the location of the ritual objects or illustrating details of the ritual. Finally the white drawing, done with rice-flour mixed with water, is dotted with a red colouring-powder. The clayed ground of the courtyard of a homestead serves as base of the painting, smoothed and cleaned with water and cow-dung.
