English | English The film shows the playing of the shawm libo, a "clarinet with a tuning-loop". The instrument is played by a member of the Haussa Colony at Bitkin, a town in the Central Tchadian Massif. The shawm libo consists of a milletstem with a reed cut out at one end. Before putting the instruments to his lips the player wraps the cord tightly around his fingers. He holds the instrument diagonnally in front of his mouth and takes the reed between his lips. Alterations in pitch are obtained by blowing or inhaling air, by modifying the length of the reed with the tuning-loop, and by opening and closing the lower opening with the thumb. The Haussa use this instrument to call the names of their friends and girl friends by transposing the syllables of the spoken names into tones. |
