Ramphal Bhandari, member of the traditional Mali caste of ornamental gardeners and garland makers, making threads from banana fibres. At the following day the Mali's wife uses the dried fibre threads to make garlands of flowers. She strings flowers on to the threads and ties them into chains of flowers. She makes three kinds of garlands, each by a different technique. To keep them fresh, she sprinkles the garlands with water, then she wraps them, together with some flowers, in large leaves of the castor-oil plant. The parcels are distributed by her son to the households of the village, where they are used in the daily domestic rite. To demonstrate the use of the flowers and garlands, the woman also hands flowers and a garland placed on a leaf to her husband, the Mali. The Mali takes them and performs with them a short ceremony on the veranda of his house, the place for worshipping Bhairava, one of the five house gods.
