Summary
Polymorphism of ten substances forming liquid crystals was investigated. It could be shown that polymorphism was found in all compounds having only one mesophase. In some cases this substances form a large number of modifications. The greatest effect showed cholesteryl benzoate having six solid forms. Cholesteryl acetate turned out with five and 4.4′-bis(penty-loxy)azoxybenzene with four modifications. Three solid forms appeared at 4′-propyl-4-biphenyl-4-butylbenzoate, 4′-pentyl-4-biphenyl-4-butylbenzoate and cholesteryl propionate, while 4.4′-bis(hexyloxy)azoxybenzene showed only two solid forms. It is remarkable that five from seven compounds are found to be an enantiotropic modification.
The substances having more than one mesophase did not show any polymorphism in the solid state. These compounds are 4.4′-bis(heptyloxy) azoxybenzene and cholesteryl nonanoate with two, and 4-pentylphenyl 4′-pentyl-4-biphenylcarboxylate with three mesophases. It clearly turned out that the rate of polymorphism in lqiuid crystal substances is considerably high.
