Abstract: This article focuses on Cuban exile artist Ana Mendieta's early 1970s performances, which are often relegated to a cursory status in her oeuvre and sometimes dismissed as inconsequential juvenilia. Instead, I argue that these mark the beginning of Mendieta's elaborate and complex engagement with racialized and gendered difference through the unsettling aesthetic force of her abject performances. I decenter focus on her well-known Silueta Series (1973-1980) by linking her early performances to the curatorial work bookending her more-recognized earthwork, offering a frame by which to revise critical interpretations of these. By focusing on abjection as a politicized aesthetic strategy I situate Mendieta squarely within a genealogy of women of color feminisms and queer of color critique, an epistemological project that enlivens the political import of Mendieta's avant-gardism. Ultimately, her recourse to the abject brings into focus analogous and shared relations to dominance by minoritized subjects beyond Cuban or even Latino particularity, allowing us to think expansively about Mendieta's contributions specifically to the field of Latino Studies.

Abstract: This article examines the politics of gender in armed guerrilla organizations during Mexico's Dirty War (1960-1980s) and the role of visual culture in documenting histories of state violence and revolutionary struggle. By centering specifically on Mexican film-maker Luisa Riley's documentary Flor en Otomí (2012), this article explores the possibilities and limitations of visual culture in representing gendered histories of trauma in recent Mexican history. As one of the few cultural texts that documents women's participation in the history of Mexico's armed socialist organizations, the film alludes to the difficulty of audiovisually portraying violence and the tensions that emerge when representing the gendered ghosts of Mexico's Dirty War. Ultimately, this article argues that the eradication of thousands of (gendered) subjectivities from Mexico's national consciousness has created a gendered haunting that holds contemporary neoliberal Mexico accountable to its recent violent past.

Abstract: Editoriales cartoneras are independent publishers who make their books out of recycled cardboard. They have spread across and beyond Latin America over the last fourteen years (since the birth of Eloísa Cartonera in Buenos Aires in 2003). They have often defined themselves, and been defined by critics, against transnational publishing corporations, but descriptions of this 'resistance' are often vague and sometimes contradictory. This is the first study to focus on the relationship between cartoneras and multinational publishers, examining areas of opposition and overlap. The paper begins by exploring the effects of the rise of transnational corporations on the world of publishing in Latin America, including neo-imperialistic centralization, concentration, and capture by market and political forces. It then turns to two case studies based (principally) in Mexico: La Verdura Cartonera and Pensaré Cartoneras. Close readings combined with interview materials illuminate the principles and practices of cartoneras, from community and collaboration to marginality and autonomy, that challenge those of transnational publishing corporations. My contention is that, while these tiny publishing projects cannot possibly 'compete' with such large corporations, what they can do is open spaces in which - to use the words of Aurelio Meza (Kodama Cartonera) - things can be done differently.

Abstract: This article looks at the process of incorporation, over the last decade, of three 'new victims' in the social and political landscape of Spain: stolen babies, detained-disappeared persons, and victims of Francoism. These three figures, while old in historical time, are very new in sociological time, where they even lack a name. To analyze this paradoxical birth, I will posit the idea that the naming, classifying, and categorizing processes that sustain it are not only explained through dynamics that are internal to the field of victims and/or to the management of the recent past in Spain, they are also explained by movements that have to do with changes in the circulation of transnational memories, stemming from new origins-Latin America, and in particular Argentina-and speeding across oceans and eras, down the very recently paved freeway of humanitarian reason. The article combines ethnographic description with the analysis of data obtained from a multidisciplinary and multi-situated fieldwork.

Abstract: This paper is concerned with East German films which deal with the subject of Chile in the aftermath of the 1973 coup d'état in a contemporary Chilean cultural framework. Conceived in the charged political atmosphere of the Cold War, this material is valuable in Chile today because it reflects East Germany as a cultural and social environment for Chilean émigré artists during the 1970s and 1980s. The author explores the films' potential as a form of cinematic postmemory for younger Chilean audiences, focusing on two feature films, Die Spur des Vermißten (1980) and Blonder Tango (1985). Do young Chileans accept these images as truthful and do they inspire a rethinking of the controversial subject of the Pinochet regime? The results suggest that the DEFA films, due to their narrative and aesthetic textures, present this audience with challenging perspectives, uncover misconceptions and evoke empathy with antagonistic social and political agents. Based on this case study, the author argues that the DEFA films are audio-visual materials which can be highly productive in cultural and educational contexts and can complement efforts to revive collective memory in Chile.
