Kurzfassung: Critical social theory has long been marked by a deep, creative, and productive relationship with psychoanalysis. Whereas Freud and Fromm were important cornerstones for the early Frankfurt School, recent thinkers have drawn on the object-relations school of psychoanalysis. Transitional Subjects is the first book-length collection devoted to the engagement of critical theory with the work of Melanie Klein, Donald Winnicott, and other members of this school. Featuring contributions from some of the leading figures working in both of these fields, including Axel Honneth, Joel Whitebook, Noëlle McAfee, Sara Beardsworth, and C. Fred Alford, it provides a synoptic overview of current research at the intersection of these two theoretical traditions while also opening up space for further innovations.Transitional Subjects offers a range of perspectives on the critical potential of object-relations psychoanalysis, including feminist and Marxist views, to offer valuable insight into such fraught social issues as aggression, narcissism, "progress," and torture. The productive dialogue that emerges augments our understanding of the self as intersubjectively and socially constituted and of contemporary "social pathologies." Transitional Subjects shows how critical theory and object-relations psychoanalysis, considered together, have not only enriched critical theory but also invigorated psychoanalysis

Kurzfassung: "This project is the first of its kind. Carefully curated by the editors, themselves prominent critical theorists, these original commissioned essays open up new ground by bringing together leading psychoanalysts and critical theorists, many of whom are active in both fields. Authors, three of whom are affiliated with Columbia, include Axel Honneth, Joel Whitebrook, C. Fred Alford, Jessica Benjamin, Jon Mills, and Danielle Petherbridge. The book provides the definitive view of the significance of object-relations psychoanalysis for critical social theory today"--

Kurzfassung: Data in the genomics field is booming. In just a few years, organizations such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will host 50+ petabytes-or 52.4 million gigabytes-of genomic data, and they're turning to cloud infrastructure to make that data available to the research community. How do you adapt analysis tools and protocols to access and analyze that data in the cloud? With this practical book, researchers will learn how to work with genomics algorithms using open source tools including the Genome Analysis Toolkit (GATK), Docker, WDL, and Terra. Brian O'Connor of the UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute and Geraldine Van der Auwera, longtime custodian of the GATK user community, guide you through the process. You'll learn by working with real data and genomics algorithms from the field. This book takes you through: Essential genomics and computing technology background Basic cloud computing operations Getting started with GATK Three major GATK best practices for variant discovery pipelines Automating analysis with scripted workflows using WDL and Cromwell Scaling up workflow execution in the cloud, including parallelization and cost optimization Interactive analysis in the cloud using Jupyter notebooks Secure collaboration and computational reproducibility using Terra
