    Abstract: Zwischen 1450 und 1750 erfaßte die Welle der Hexenverfolgung ganz Europa. Levack, US-Geschichts-Professor, untersucht die geistigen und rechtlichen Grundlagen der Hexenjagd, den Einfluß der Reformation, das soziale Umfeld und referiert regionale Muster. Das Fazit - eigentlich nicht überraschend aber selten so deutlich gesagt: es gibt keine einheitliche Theorie, monokausale Erklärungen sind letztlich wenig überzeugend, vielmehr waren geographische und zeitimmanente Faktoren für die einzelnen Abläufe ausschlaggebend. Nach vielen Einzelstudien, die mehr oder weniger große Regionen abdeckten, hier eine kompakte, zusammenfassende Darstellung. Verständliche wissenschaftliche Arbeit mit sehr gutem Anhang (u.a. kommentierte Literaturhinweise). (2) (Elisabeth Mair-Gummermann)
